hiho!
...i've been seeking an answer to this for weeks now...
does anybody of you know the certain kind of e-drums that roger played occasionally in some 80s recordings?? (esp. "radio ga ga")
he seems to use the same kit for both, queen and his solo-work.
freddie's "love kills"-drums sound very much the same.
so, what is it?
fairlight??
kurzweil??
please help!!! :)
Roland Octopad triggering a drum machine on the Magic tour
Simmons drums during the late 80's
And Syn Drums during the late 70's early 80's
Check out 'Fun it'
Plus some triggers on the acoustic set from time to time, he is currently using a trigger on his Bass drum.
Ga Ga was probably a combination of the simmons kit and a drum machine looped, Machines probably the simmons kit on its own
Love Kills I suspect was a studio drum machine and no live drummer.

I believe the drum machine used on Radio ga ga, I want to break free, Love kills, Thank God it's christmas etc. was a LinnDrum. link
Ga Ga and Break Free would have been demo'd on the Linn or drum machine, however I think Roger was playing 'live' for the final track and then creating a loop of the first few bars to repeat throughout the song.
The Linn was used in the studio to demo work on Queen tracks and then on occasion I think Roger played live triggering the Linn via the Simmons kit. The Freddie solo stuff was almost certainly a drum machine on Love Kills, however he too had a real drummer working on the tracks, unfortuately I forget his name.
No Radio ga ga was all Linn No Roger on the it.
Actually Kind Of Magic was also a drum machine.
In fact 5 tracks off Strange Frontier were all drum loops and he over dubbed the drum fills - lazy bones! oh and Dragon Atack , Another one bite's are drum loops.
ZZ top made the Linn drum sound famous with Sharp dressed man and Give me all your loving !
another one bites the dust - drum-loops??
i don't believe that!!
sounds very much like live drums, 'cause they're not always straight in time.
it's that famous Mack-recording technique that made roger's drums sound so special on this. he said that in some interview.
same goes for dragon attack.

I'm pretty confident that the demo was Linn, Or similar, but he did infact play the loop on the simmons kit and then it was time corrected.
He very possibly did use the simmons to trigger the Linn for the sound.
