Ive heard that its about the gay community or something then somewhere else ive heard that it was a completely diffrent thing. Does any body know what its really about??
soccer (football, whatever. the sport Beckham plays). He wrote it as a sports anthem, however there were rumours that it was about how Queen defeated the press.
Ah ok. i do remember i watched it on a program called freddies loves and it said that it was about the gay community. So is that show incorrect? I mean, did they make up some stuff for it or is it all true?
it was probably an unoffical doc. so nothing had to be fact. However, you could be right. I'm just telling you what I've heard. I can't remember where i got my facts from, i think it may have been the GH video or something.
i agree that it might be unofficial 'cause some guy [Freddies 1st lover as he said] says that KQ and somebody to love was written all about him. Then theres Jim Huton that says [at the end of TATDOOL when Freddie says i still love you] that Freddie says that to him. I dont know what to believe, but the documentary looked a little bogus
Freddie:
"That song, 'We Are The Champions' has been taken up by football fans because it's a winners' song. I can't believe that someone hasn't written a new song to overtake it.
Certainly it's 'a relationship that could be, but I was thinking about football when I wrote it. I wanted a participation song, something the fans could latch on to. It was aimed at the masses; I thought we'd see how they took it. It worked a treat. When we performed it at a private concert in London, the fans actually broke into a football chant between numbers. Of course, I've given it more theatrical subtlety than an ordinary football chant. You know me. I certainly wasn't thinking about the press when I wrote it. I never think about the British music press these days. It was really meant to be offered the musicians the same as the fans. I suppose it could also be construed as my version of 'I Did It My Way.' We have made it, and it certainly wasn't easy. No bed of roses as the song says. And it's still not easy."
Brian:
"I can understand some people saying 'We Are The Champions' was bombastic. But it wasn't saying Queen arc the champions, it was saying all of us are. It made the concert like a football match, but with everyone on the same side.
You know, songs aren't always about what the words say. Messages in songs can appear different. I always see that as the difference between prose and poetry. Prose can mean exactly what it says, while poetry can mean the opposite. That goes for this song. Freddie's stuff is often tongue-in-cheek anyway, as you know. This song is very theatrical. Freddie is very close to his art. You could say, he's married to his music, whether it's 'I Did It My Way' or his 'There's No Business Like Show Business. I must say, when he first played it for us in the studio we all fell on the floor with laughter. So many of the people in the press hate us because we've side-stepped them and got where we have without them. But there's no way the song says anything against our audiences. When the song says 'we,' it means 'us and the fans.' When we did that special concert, the fans were wonderful. They understood it so well. I know it sounds corny, but it brought tears to our eyes."
k thanks Serry... for the info. So its about a football team? interesting. Those people in that documentary freddie loves said it was written about the gay community. What a bunch of morons!
It wouldn't have been good promotion for the song if Freddie had told 'Oh, it's about gay community, darling.' We certainly don't know what he was thinking when he wrote it. Perhaps he was thinking about football but I think he was maybe having a laugh with us. All those football fans chanting his gay anthem.
Anyway, it's still a great song with clever lyrics that can be interpreted in many ways. That's what poetry is all about, isn't it?
I can't believe I am adding to this thread....but since many of the fans who post here are very young I suppose I can point out a few things since I was following the band back in 1970's.
I believe WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS is nothing more than a catchy anthem the band released very early on...a trademark sound that made them easily recognized before they became hugely famous.
As for the contention that it has some particular relevance to AIDS or the Gay community:
The song pre-dates the AIDS epidemic by a number of years....no one had even heard of AIDS at the time the song was recorded.
While I can't say for sure that it has no secret gay connotation, Freddie was still involved with Mary Austin and living a publicly straight lifestyle when it was released. The other three members of the band are heterosexual so I find it rather unlikely that the song contains any intentional gay message or agenda.
I agree with you. I've been a fan since 77 and the lyrics are obviously dealing with the topic of trials and tribulations of his success and finally reaching it. I think the chorus is paying tribute to the fans that made him a success and put him on top. Your welcome Freddie. Thanks for the music!
I thought this was the last Queen song that no-one had said it was about AIDS. But I checked. The only one left is Another One Bites The Dust. Which actually is about AIDS. There, now there are none left.
I thought COMING SOON wasn't about AIDS but about... well, finishing sexual intercourse...
Well- so it could be about AIDS, bugger...
But what about We Will Rock You... I mean... No, no- wait, it is about AIDS...
Nope, you're right, it's all about AIDS. I guess the only one that isn't is "Say It'n Not True"... Fuck, what is this one all about?
Now that Freddie is dead anyone can say whathever they want because he can't argue anymore!
The beauty of those songs is that anyone can relate to them, and i think that is the ultimate goal for a songwriter.
Take care
If "We Are The Champions" is about gays and gay rights, then it's a great song. If it's not, then it's a great song.
Nobody really knows what it's about but it probably doesn't matter.
