In an interview ages ago with Billie Joe Armstrong, he said that Queen were a major influence for their American Idiot album. He also said that Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming (the two 9-minute long songs on the album) were their Bohemian Rhapsody. Or something along those lines.
I think it's sweet that they sung 'We Are The Champions' as a tribute. And Billie Joe is the original Sex On Legs, making it so much better.
Also, if you watch the GD Bible in a Bullet DVD, Billie Joe says that this is the first opportunity that they have ever had to play in front of HUGE stadium sized crowds. He wanted to do something SPECTACULAR that was beyond just a fireworks show. He wanted to make it intimate, but also wanted everyone to see something memorable. It is a fine tribute to Queen done with PUNK respect. He certainly doesn't sing it like Queen, but the crowd was certainly with him and he made it memorable. Don't mind the tape in the beginning it was BJ just fooling around.
I remember seeing GD when they were playing Sunday afternoons to just 30 people at Gilman Street in Berkeley, CA.

I never realized how poorly his stage voice is until this video. In fact, at several points during the video, during the non-chorus parts (the choruses were pretty good), he could be clearly mistaken as mentally handicapped or suffering from some other disability.
I enjoy much of Green Day's studio work, but this was disappointing.
Okay, sorry, I couldn't get through the whole song. Don't think I like Green Day. BUT... I thought it was interesting when he removed his mustache. Did you notice? It was right after he said, "and bad mistakes". Then he held it up for a second and said, "I've made a few". Poor Freddie. The world will always remember his mustache-acceptance woes.
Guess it was a playful tribute.
I like the idea of atribute, but I think Billie Joe sang it horrible. He ruined the whole song.
But, sure, if it's a tribute to Queen then I can accept it.
I don't like Green Day. I like their early-90s stuff, but when I heard Billie Joe sing WATC at Live 8, it was like someone was scraping a fork and knife on a plate right next to me. :)

EXACTLY how i felt, i watched that pissing my pants laughing at them, then everyone's like they stole the preformance with that song i was like ummmm no one even listens to Queen on this network do they?
then when i saw them playing red special i was like yea this really is not right. I actually got yelled at from my mom cuz i was laughying so hard
Ive seen a picture from their past tour or present tour where I guess its at the end of the concert, Billy Is in the front of the stage with a crown and a robe exactly as that of Freddie when he came out during the Magic Tour at the end of the concerts. I think that sucks cause first he killed WATC by singing it and now he's killing one of Freddie's greatest moments during Queen's tours.
What's wrong with them?? What is their fucking problem??? Can't they come up with something own, instead of copying Queen all the time??
Apparently not.... >:(

Copying Queen all the time?? Certainly the most unfounded statement I've ever heard, Green Day fan or not.
having just watched it - its fine they did a good job ... far better that stupid bitch Liza Menelli at Freddie's tribute show (that still makes me cringe)

Haha :)
Playing WATC, playing a red-special-copy, coming out on stage with a crone and a cape, SAYING THEMSELVES that their American Idiot-album is mainly influenced by Queen, calling their f*cking Jesus of Subrubia-song "a Bo Rhap".
If you (like Green Day) have done all these things I find it only fair of me to say "copying Queen all the time" :) (well... you know 'all the time', it's what I say...)

I know this girl and she thought that WATC was a greenday song....
When I told her that it was QUEEN. She said Queen were better then she thought...
well i do not seem to hate greed day..they do their own stuff in their own style rather okay..they know how to entertain-that's what they do good..and all the stuff with queen should be taken as a tribute..better or worse but a tribute-that is a good promotional thing i think..don't you??
