Technically, they also covered themselves on two South American dates, but indeed it's an impressive list. I really would like to hear the ..Japan album. They even played the extended solo's as found on the live album! |

You go to a show hoping to see songs from that band, and then they perform only other peoples songs. what a ripoff |

Rip off? They play 3 hours every night. When I saw them in Hammersmith last year they played two nights in row. Firts one- 3 hours of their material. Second night- 2 hours of their own material and they repeated only ONE SONG. And after that they added DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. That's how it works every time. Rip off? C'mon man!!!!! That's the best value for money (30 pounds each gig) I have ever seen!!!! And you should hear them playing any of those albums- it's SOMETHING to be at a night like that, I can tell you... |
willem-jan 8923 18.01.2006 09:50 |
Actually, the band (Mike Portnoy) even checks what they've been playing the previous times in the city they are performing in that night, and try to avoid songs they've already played. So it's the opposite to being a rip off. And indeed, Dream Theater announces the nights where they are covering whole albums. Now Queen, 1986, that's a rip-off. Every night the same songs in the same order. Could it be more boring? I think not. |

And there you go- on 16th of January they covered themselves again and played entire OCTAVARIUM, back to back. Nice! It's only few times (twice?) they actually played THE ANSWER LIES WITHIN. |

Dream Theater are the best live band in the world right now - hands down. Can't wait until March 22... Massey Hall in Toronto, which will be almost two years to the day when I met the band backstage. A night I'll never forget. |

Queen's longest shows were on the NOTW tour, and they were a bit over two hours. Q+PR played some shows up to 135 minutes. As for the setlist, the Hot Space tour was Queen's most adventurous, but look at all the changes we saw in 2005! I really hope the set gets changed up for '06. |

jasen101 wrote: how people can actually like this band is beyond me.The reason why I can see why some people might not like Dream Theater is because guitar and drum solos that go on for 10 minutes eventually get boring to many. Some people enjoy the instrumental virtuosity, and others don't. I do enjoy it to some extent, but I certainly find that at some point I've had enough of it. The Beatles weren't particularly the most skilled instrument players, but they became the biggest band of all time based just on their songwriting skills. |

There is a huge difference between structured music and improvised music. DT's music contains structured instrumentals that can go for five minutes or so. This kind of stuff is over the heads of 90% of the musical audience, so that's why the majority of their audience consists of serious musicians. Even aside from that crucial difference in musical styles, a band playing long instrumentals in concert is nothing new. Let's look at the Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin... at least half of their average concert consisted of guitar solos, and they're hailed as two of the greatest live bands of all time. |
Mr.Jingles 03.02.2006 21:57 |
I think we all know for sure that Led Zeppelin was one of the greatest live bands of all time. However I never thought of Greatful Dead as a great live band. I always thought of them as a great band to get stoned to. |
