I was reading that excerpt of Jim Hutton's 'My Fairy King' (the longish one spread over three pages).
Anyway, I noticed two things:
i.) Jim Hutton makes a comment about how Mary said some fairly "clumsy" things before Freddie died. In his defence he says that she probably didn't mean it (or something to that effect), but the comment was still striking. He needn't have mentioned it in the first place (since in that entire passage he generally had only good things to say of everyone else, and since this was one of the few times he mentioned Mary).
ii.) He makes very little mention of Mary at all with regards to Freddie's last days. In interviews with Mary however she paints a different picture, i.e. talking of how she would sit at Freddie's bedside, comb his hair, etc. Jim Hutton never mentioned any of this. Then again I don't know if Mary mentioned Jim much.
Also, earlier in that excerpt, he mentioned briefly the incident where Freddie appeared for a press shoot with Mary instead of himself. Was there not a slight degree of resentment in the way he spoke about that incident?
Anyway, I'm not implying anything, I was just wondering whether there was in fact any sort of jealousy existing between Jim and Mary, or did they get along fine?
I heard they didn't get on too well (I'm not sure how true that is) especially after Freddie left most of the estate to Mary and you're right when I read that about her being 'clumsy' I got the distinct feeling that there was a dislike there.

I read both those web pages too, and I have to agree. Jim seemed to be quite jealous/resentful of Freddie's friendship with Mary. So she asked Freddie if he wanted to take his wedding band off because his fingers would swell. It sounds to me that she just asked out of concern for him. She didn't mention Jim at all in that interview in OK magazine either though...perhaps there was jealousy on both sides.
