I first saw that kit when Roger played Wembley in 1980, by 1981 I had my arm twisted into buying a snare drum and joining a band.
I went to London to buy a Bass drum and found the only one I could get without the whole kit was a Ludwig Silver Sparkle, having seen Roger I had to have it, and that set the tone for the rest of the kit which has slowly followed over the years.
I have several different tom sizes etc these days depending on what I need however the picture shows the Roger Taylor sizes, compleat with Rotatoms on the side which you can hardly see.
Finally after 25 years or so I now have everything I need including the same cymbals and wind chimes.
They are very loud, I use no damping at all these days as I have mastered tuning over the years and only very occasionally need to dampen if in a studio and I can't get rid of a nasty buzz somewhere.
We are playing a private party (50th Birthday) next week and we are in the middle of rehearsals, it takes me over an hour to set up and get the mics around the kit.
The tone is fantastic, the whole kit (except Bass drum and snare) has been made for me and shipped from Ludwig, even some of the cymbals are special orders the 22" K Ride (not pictured) is a special with a 6 month wait from Zildjian!
As a band we have smoke machines and lights and we look pretty impressive when we go out and the set generally comprises old Queen, Stones, and Who numbers, including this time
TYMD
Crazy Little Thing
WWRY
The Who's Won't get fooled again
Stones, satisfaction, Jumpin Jack Flash
plus, Wonderwall, All Right Now, Can't get enough of your love and many many more, we are playing for two hours.
After next week we start working on recording this year. In the past we have been lucky enough to use great studios, I have a contact in the BBC and the engineers sometimes use downtime to learn new equipment so we have gone in to help them try things out and spent several days/weeks recording the results over the years, however this time around I suspect we will be hiring a small out of town studio in Oxfordshire that we have used to rehearse in.
We plan to record some of what we do for live stuff and a collection of our own songs as well but it all depends on time and money. And as we have 6 in the band it also depends on not too many agruments!
