I heard different, there was so many rumours the ones i heard were

allergy to peanuts

i just googled it up and what actually happened was a bearded lady shot a dwarf out of a cannon. and it landed on his elephant head freak accident

The movie "Mask" about the real like Rocky Dennis (with Cher playing his mom Rusty), had a similar genetic disorder that causes the skull and calcifications to grow non stop out of proportion, crushing the brain and spine.
Rocky had craniodiaphyseal dysplasia.
