I think freddie is really fantastic both live and in the studio. Of course it's obvious that his range live was a lot smaller. he also never sang on his falsetto. This said I have to admit I prefer for some reasons freddie live.
I like all my bootlegs, even when his voice suffered because he sings with such great passion. It's incredible. He always puts his heart and soul in his vocals. There are singers with a bigger range and that are technically more skilled but don't have the same emotion. Another important point is his power.Especially during the 80s.Like live aid:what a performance!!!
yes I agree with much of what you say, in particular the idea that Fred's voice had more power in the 80s. I don't know if you've seen Live At Wembley put the way he roars that note before "Under Pressure we're cracking" is amazing. And the power on TYMD is mighty- he just outguns his studio version completely. I think he holds back less live, not on the notes but on the force and strength he went for it and that was great.
If I was to come out either side, I'd say studio though because we got to hear a mixture of voices from Fred which was his great strength particularly on Innuendo where the range is extraordinary; one hears something as delicate as Bijou or Don't try So Hard, the semi-spoken vocal of TATDOOL, the high lead of Innuendo and the grit of rock songs like ICLWY or headlong. Live of cours eit's hard to re-create that palette. Dear me palletes indeed, i'm sounding suspiciously similar to Brian may's language.
I love both his live and studio performces. I'm shocked at how many people on queenzone think freddie's voice was weak on wembly, I find his voice amazing during that show. I know he didn't have the range that he did in the early eighties, but still was a amazing performace. I would say the studio freddie was better, but sometimes I prefer his live voice.

I quite agree, I like his Wembley voice too. Very agressive and authorative. The power is incredible.

I love both. Live he was the best. Some of the songs are so powerful and amazing it's amazing. But I love studio stuff to.
I have to say it depends on the song. I love him performing because he seem so giving and powerful, it's really great to see the man.
And his feeling also tends to comunicate so much.
But I agree that in the studio he got more complex and could have more effects that live, which made a song sound as if you were in Heaven.
Then again, Rog and Bri voices seem to be much better on the studio recordings, in my opinion, although Rog's voice is also quite good live.
I find that for example CLTCL gets amzingly greater live than on the studio recording, and it also goes like that with LOML, to name just two songs.
