As a non-English speaker I did not realise the joke and I don't find this usage (!! means: not to be taken seriously) in my style dictionary. I wasn't asking for an upload, just for an answer to my question how I can tell the - apparently existing - fake from the real demo. You, John, do not owe me an answer but there is no need to make fun of me, either. It was just a simple question. |

YourValentine wrote: As a non-English speaker I did not realise the joke and I don't find this usage (!! means: not to be taken seriously) in my style dictionary.Well, English is my primary language but I was not aware that "!!" indicated joking. Expecting that to be common knowledge is as bad as the young kids in these forums expecting the rest of us to be able to understand their 2 paragraphs of run-on sentences. |

I would sort of imagine that it was in reference to everyone asking for stuff like 'Face It Alone' to be uploaded, and while it wasn't a direct poke at you, the overall sentiment was supposed to be tongue-in-cheek. I think that the problem with the Internet is that it's really difficult to tell when one is being serious or not. |

If my original mail caused any offence, I apologise.
"I'll upload it for Xmas." (ending in a full-stop) - or - "I'll upload it for Xmas!!" (ending with multiple exclamation marks) - has two different meanings. The first is a definitive statement, the second - less so. If I quote Alex, he too uses the same technique (So perhaps it is a Scottish thing):
Alex Solan wrote:I can reach my cheek with my tongue. Seriously (!!)As Lester correctly observed, my original posting was NOT meant to be taken seriously, nor was this remark directed against YV or at any individual or fellow Queenzoner. If my posting can be interpreted as mocking anyone, again I apologise. I know I take myself too seriously, but, whenever I try to humanise, or inject a bit of humour into my mail, for some reason, people seem to get upset. I recently uploaded both 'Polar Bear - take 2', and the 'We Will Rock You - Percussion track' as early Xmas presents. At last count, between them, both tracks scored over 600 downloads, and yet this translated into about 30 - 40 positive 'Thank Yous', about 2 - 3 neutral observations, and at least one charge that one was fake. This means that the overwhelming 90+ % were no more than 'hit and run' leechers - which hardly builds anyones confidence to upload even more rarities. With no offence against 'Pino24', the above is his first and ONLY posting - which to me suggests that he has downloaded all this previous material, without even a 'bye your leave'. Furthermore to call someone 'a liar or a joker...' in your Queenzone debut, is hardly a way to win friends or influence people. I may be wrong here, but I do not wish rare tracks to end up on e-bay, and I guess (and yet again I could be wrong) that such a strong opening mail is directed against a loss of some sort, rather than the gentle reminder of a more sensitive nature. Finally, although I was genuinely in two minds when I wrote my original statement, I have since had time to reconsider. After years of 'spreading' many, many FREE rarities, (ALL of which have ended up on e-bay without me making any return), I recently failed to track down a 'Face It Alone' demo. Wherever I turn, it is a case of 'door closed' unless I share something utra-rare in return. With each rarity that 'escapes' the less chance I have of obtaining anything new. So although by nature, I am quite a generous person, if I was to release the 'Who Wants To Live Forever' demo here, it's value will have become spent. (Even the parts of the MacBeth Suite I uploaded are now valueless). I know this is harsh, but, I see very few who are genuinely open, and for me to keep giving, giving, and giving is at the end of the day, something I can not afford to continue. |

I still can't understand why people just can't say simple and short "thanks!". If you have it even, it's not so hard to say that. John/Alex/Barbara/Niek/Thijs/Jay etc. etc. etc. spend their time and traffic to upload something interesting and can't receive "thanks" back at least. |

It was a great month for rarities on Queenzone and i thank you for your uploads, and i thimk you're right. Even though i don't have the Demo of ITTWWC i agree that you must keep some items rare so people can guive you something in return!- It's the world we live in. Take care |

John S Stuart wrote: This means that the overwhelming 90+ % were no more than 'hit and run' leechers - which hardly builds anyones confidence to upload even more rarities. What if everyone contributed a thank you response? Oh boy - a 50 page thread of nothing but "thank you's". Any constructive or informational posts would be drowned out by the thank yous. Also, if one downloads something, it can generally be assumed that the downloaders appreciate the effort. I know I do not waste my time downloading every link willy-nilly. Finally - using the leecher label in this case is uncalled for. Many of us who do not flood the board with thank yous can hardly be called leechers. We do not sell on e-bay (Actually I pity those that buy CD-R's for their ignorance rather than those that sell CD-R's). We seed torrents for over 100 % sharing ratio. We occasionally restart torrents when requested. We stay connected to the QueenHub overnight so that more people can download. Occasionally we might torrent something that had not been shared before. Finally, John - I do not blame you for deciding not to share anymore. If you, of all people can not obtain Face It Alone, then it is probably time to stop sharing. It is a pity that many traders value the rareness of an item over the quality of the music. Still traders are better than QP - who tend to release retreads rather than what fans are really clamoring for. |

RVW: A couple of points. I agree with you. My original posting was meant as a joke. If this has back-fired, shame on me. I admit I got it badly wrong, but I thought the exclamtions at the end of the sentence depicted a humourous tone. If this was misleading, I fully apologise. (As Alex has confirmed, this is not my own 'secret code' - but a fairly 'widespread' practice). It was not meant to offend either on a specific or a general level. Sorry. As for the 'Thanks' I agree with you there too. I do NOT upload for pages of ars*-licking sycophancy, I did so to genuinely share. (I have also secretly shared material via e-mail - and insisted I remain anonymous - so the joy of 'giving' remains as strong as ever). If I implied otherwise, again I say sorry. I KNOW the Queenzone regulars. I know YOU personally are happy with any uploads. You do NOT have to say 'Thank-You' every time, because like so many others in here, you provide positive feedback in so many different ways. Your contributions, your honesty in discussions, your sense of humour (and I can go on), but the point is you are NOT alone. This room is filled with 'regulars' whom I have got to know over the years, and I feel that you guys are genuine people, so I did not mean the offensive 'leeching' term to apply to the 'Genuine' general Queenzone readership, and for that yet again I find myself having to say sorry. What annoyed me about 'Pino24's' FIRST and ONLY mail, is that s/he was overpoweringly demandingly rude, (but that could be just my interpretation). I also feel that to 'quote' from previous threads strongly suggests previous readings and downloadings, and infact, 'Pino24' could be a front for a more regular poster. Whatever, it is hardly a positive first impression! (Notice that exclamation mark again!). A polite 'reminder' would have opened my heart easier (It is easier to catch bees with honey - than vinegar), as I find that any other form of demand can be construed as a type of internet 'bullying' - and I am damned if I am going to be intimidated by anyone. (Again, this is MY reading of events). To write: "...and im STILL WAITING, well maybe hes just a liar or a joker who knows..." SIX full hours BEFORE 25th December, PROVOKED me into thinking - 'f*ck that' who do some of these guys think they are? And why do I have to upload anything? (As if my 'delay' was some sort of real inconvenience - rather than a special treat). Anonymous demands, from non-contributers are (for me) a real turn-off, and if that offends, then I am sorry for that too, but the terms 'Bulls' and 'red-flags' spring instantly to mind. I feel that this has thread has somehow gone completely 'pear-shape' and has taken some wierd turn for the worst. The bottom line is: I offer no excuses. I meant what I said as a joke. I am sorry if this was misinterpreted and taken seriously - and I offer unreserved apologies to all regular readers who may feel they have been let down. But, for the opportunistic 'wagon-jumpers' I offer no such symapathy. |
A Word In Your Ear 25.12.2005 21:00 |
Hear!, Hear!, John I totally agree with you, on this. Why should you be kind & share, when certain people are rude & have bad manners. In the past I have shared quite a lot, I don't mind sharing, if it helps other Queen fans to expand their collection, but when certain so called fans start to bad mouth others, all it will do is make the sharers clam up & not share anything at all. So we ALL lose out. All I Beg is for the ones who just Leech & complain, to BUTTON IT & don't spoil it for the rest. Please be thankfull for what you get, Something is better than nothing at all. Hope you all have a wonderful Christmas & a even better new year. :-) |
Saint Jiub 25.12.2005 23:36 |
I paid no attention to pino and his demands, and your exclamation point explanation was good enough for me. I believe that leeching (without sharing) and selling on e-bay are slightly significant moral issues, but I no longer believe that these pathetic people (or their customers) are worth acknowledging. Why should these people be allowed to ruin it for everyone else. They are not worth the time of day. |

A Word In Your Ear 26.12.2005 12:11 |
zebonka, "Face it alone" is a very hard to come by Queen Demo, that a few people/traders have & are unwilling to share, unless they can get something as equally rare in return for it. |
