Hello queen fans, i was just reading about the original band that featured Brian, Roger and later Freddie, SMILE sounded like.
I can't find any songs by the original SMILE and i really want to hear what Queen sounded like before they were actually officially Queen - do you understand what i mean?
If anyone knows where i can find an original track by SMILE or if anyone saw them live can you tell me what they were like can you let me know
THANKS#

OK
But didnt freddie come and sing with them some times? And (apparently) he classed himself as the fith member of SMILE.
They didnt call think of themselves as queen untill John came along and joined the band did they?

Try listening to Doin' Alright on the first Queen Album. That was a Smile song first. Their other songs were in a similar style.
No Freddie on vocals originally though. I guess the Queen I version is probably about as close as you will get to Smile with Freddie.
But it is worth trying to get hold of the Smile album if you can, you will not be disappointed especially if you like Queen I
You can also get Tim Stafell's album Amigo from his website link
It is a fairly recent recording that consists mainly of non-smile tracks.
But it does feature fairly recent recordings (90s)of Brian and Tim performing the Smile tracks Doin Alright and Earth. No Roger on this though.

NO: Smile and Queen are two seperate distinctly individual bands.
However, when Queen were first concieved, Roger had previously booked 'his' old band at one of his favourite home town gigs (Truro City Hall) under the Smile name.
'Roger's - and Brian's' new band Queen - undertook the booking instead, but rather than be billed as Queen, they simply went along with the old Smile name. This made financial sense, as almost everyone locally had heard of Smile and thus a bigger audience guaranteed.
So on 27th June 1970 Queen played their first ever live concert under the Smile alias.
The line-up that evening was:
Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, tambourine),
Brian May (electric guitar, backing vocals),
Roger Taylor (drums, backing vocals),
Mike Grose (a friend of Roger's - bass guitar)
This is the first and only time Queen were ever billed as Smile. Apart from this gig, Freddie had no other Smile connections, as he never appeared live with Brian, Roger and Tim Staffel. (However, it is true that Brian and Roger once appeared on stage with Ibex/Wreckage).

Forgive my memory. Does a recording of that exist?
Sadly no; Neither the Truro city hall, or the recording of Freddie, Brian and Roger as Ibex exists.
A recording of the Ibex evening does exist, but just as the first half of the show only. The second half of the show with guests, unfortunately, does not.
Thats what I thought. Couldn't quite remember though.

didnt ibex visit the smile and queen concerts in an attempt to get roger to join there band.
At least thats what it said in queen the definitive biography.
It said that roger and brian said that freddie classed/ thought of himself as the behind the scenes member.
