As I have posted here before many times, I have been playing the drums for many years and the main reason I became a drummers was and is Roger. My question for you folks tonight is, do U like Roger's drums with or without triggers? 1970-1985-W/O, 1986-2005/W. Cheers!!!!!
I believe he is only using a trigger on his bass drum currently, just to reinforce the sound on certain sounds/solos
As for w/wo well depends how it is used IMO he has never let them get in the way of the song.
To be frank that would be very difficult as you have no way of knowing what was a triggered sound and what was a result of mic placement and EQ in the studio.
They are mostly used for live work to re-capture the studio sound or boost the normal ambient sound or sometimes just to add effects.
For example Roger could choose to use them on Radio Ga Ga to re-capture the original drum machine sound when playing live, however, he chooses not to, from what I can tell he is only using one on his bass drum to re-inforce the sound and the only way I can be sure is because there is a picture of the trigger on the right hand side of his drum in the tour programme, see a small red box fixed to the back hoop of the bass drum.
If you have Live in Budapest, when Roger plays his third beat on the bass drum only, no snare and or crash in WWTLF in Brian's solo, his bass drum is defintely triggered. Also, if you listen to NIH's ending at Live at Wembley '86, his toms are defintely being triggered.
I remember taking my lessons, and bringing Live at Wembley for one of my sessions, and when my drum teacher heard his drum solo at the end of this song, the first thing he said was that Rogers definitely had been using triggers.
Roger's Octapad actually did not have an internal sound, it was hooked up through a Midi Module to trigger certain parts of his set at specific times when he, the drum tech, and sound man wanted to.
I hope this answers a few questions for non-drummer Queen fans. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah. Roger only triggers his bass but during the magic tour, his whole set was triggered. Although I have triggers on my drums and im not a big fan of them. But they are good on certin parts.
What's a trigger?
I'm a drummer, but yet I don't know what a trigger is. :(
And speaking of drums, has anyone noticed that Roger's been using double kick pedals on the recent tour?
A trigger is a divice that attaches to the batter/top head of the drum and senses when it is hit, the signal than feeds to a drum machine or sound device that fires a preselected noise, usually a sample of a drum sound, the two sounds ie the original and the triggered sound combine together to give a much larger sound.
