Tonight the groups for the 2006 tournament will be drawn in a huge event in Leipzig with alleged 500 million people watching world wide. 32 teams will play the first round in 8 groups and tonight we will learn which teams will play against each other in the first round. What a hype. It would have been enough to draw the teams in a 10 minute ceremony somewhere in a FIFA office:) For Germany, the worst case would be to play in the same group as Holland. Why? Because for some reason I do not know it's okay to lose against anybody but the Dutch. |
Mr.Jingles 09.12.2005 11:12 |
You know there's going to be group of death. Last time it was England, Argentina, Nigeria, and Sweden. |
@ndy38 09.12.2005 11:32 |
Forza Azzurri! I hope Italy get a hard group, because whenever they get an easy group they always take the matches too casually and end up getting put out. How are Mexico within the top seeds? I thought that was a bit strange..... |
YourValentine 09.12.2005 16:39 |
Lucky Germans have Poland, Ecuador and Costa Rica. There won't be any excuses if they fail. |
The Mir@cle 09.12.2005 16:40 |
Argentina, Ivory coast, Serbia and The Netherlands... oh my god :S |
Mr.Jingles 09.12.2005 17:00 |
Toughest groups - Italy, Czech Republic, Ghana, United States - Argentina, Holland, Cote de Ivore, Serbia |
@ndy38 09.12.2005 17:23 |
Yeah and i think Portugal are gonna walk all over Group D.... |
Mr.Jingles 09.12.2005 17:36 |
<font color=black>Andy<font color=red>38 wrote: Yeah and i think Portugal are gonna walk all over Group D....That was the exact same thing they said 4 years ago, which was also the same thing they said about France. Every World Cup becomes more unpredictable than the previous one. |
@ndy38 09.12.2005 18:19 |
Yeah you're right, but logically speaking, Portugal are extremley likely to win from that group. But talking about the World Cup in general, Japan/Korea 2002 and Euro 2004 didn't have any unstoppable teams, they had favourites but there wasn't a team who was unbeatable. This is why i think Germany 2006 differs, as i don't think anyone is capable of beating Brazil. |
bitesthedust 10.12.2005 03:35 |
Italy and Czech Republic should progress from Group E, but it's a tough looking group (aside from Ghana). |
@ndy38 10.12.2005 05:54 |
I think Italy will learn from their mistakes from the past few competitions....they always under estimate their opponents, but i think that will change. |

... and go home dissapointed in the quarter finals. I'm delighted with our drawer. I sat next to the brother of someone who plays for Trinidad and Tobago during Business Studies class, so to see him playing against England will be cool, as long as we stuff them. Germans and the Spanish have it nice and easy. Roll on the 2nd round. |

Yes, what a suprise, Germany have an easy group again. straight to the final for them. Is it me being naive, or is it because germany support sepp Blatter so much that they get easy draws? |
Fenderek 12.12.2005 04:25 |
Germans have it easy? Just wait and see... This will be a war, man... |
@ndy38 12.12.2005 06:51 |
If Germany go through it'll be a good chance that they play either Sweden or England in the last 16, i can't say that's easy. |
YourValentine 12.12.2005 07:01 |
"Germans have it easy? Just wait and see... This will be a war, man..." oh oh .. let's hope it will rain... |
Mr.Jingles 12.12.2005 08:35 |
I decline to root for any team right now. I usually end up rooting for the underdog team that does an excellent job on the first round. |

Outsiders will be Poland and Australia (Guus Hiddink did a good job with Korea during the last WC and it seems he is doing the same thing with Australia now)Hey I just saw this! You really think Italy won't make it and the US will? LOL |

YourValentine wrote: "Germans have it easy? Just wait and see... This will be a war, man..." oh oh .. let's hope it will rain...He, he :) So you guys remember 1974 :) If only it DIDN'T rain! LOL :) It will be a good game, though- very competitive. |
Fenderek 13.12.2005 04:14 |
And who'll go through? IMO... A: Germany and Poland B: England and Sweden C: Argentina and Netherlands (although I'd be very carefull with Serbia- in fact it's possible for ARG to go home after 3 games...) D: Mexico and Portugal (and what an easy group this is...) E: Italy and Czech Republic (which is another team I'll be supporting) F: Brazil and Croatia G: France and Korea Republic H: Spain and Ukraine |

Fenderek 13.12.2005 05:48 |
Nah, US is crap- we beat them last World Cup 3:1 even though we didn't go through from the group stage... They're NOT BAD, but they definitely won't repeat last WC result. Same goes for Korea- they may qualify further because their group is easy but it will end than and there- 2nd round. Who's America's biggest star right now? Landon Donovan? The guy had to come back to US after leaving Bundesliga which- let's face it- is not the strongest league in the world anyway... I can't see Italy winning this World Cup- in fact, I can't see them going past quarter finals. But they will definitelly qualify from their fairly easy group... Maybe they (players) are egocentric and full of themselves but still- footballers like Totti do know how to play football, much better than 10 Landon Donovans... IMO of course... |

Of course, Fenderek. The legendary "water battle" Germany vs Poland is shown on TV whenever a member of the 74 team turns 50 or 60 :) Be scared - the Germans are that lucky ;) |

This and England-Poland game at Wembley in 1973 :) Well- if you're THAT lucky we have to make sure we beat Ecuador and Costa Rica... Ecuador is probably a bit tougher but... they're not going to play this time at 2000m, are they... |
Mr. Scully 13.12.2005 08:08 |
As usually, USA have more self-confidence than real football skills but I still wouldn't underestimate them... from our group Italy and Czech Republic should qualify but USA will bite. With a bit of luck (for them), the qualifying teams can be Italy+USA or Czech Republic+USA. The "Argentina" group is the toughest one, our group is the second toughest I think. What's pissing me off is that all Czech matches will be near French borders while at least one of the matches from our group (Italy-Ghana I think) will be in Nurnberg which is only 100km from Czech borders. Quite stupid... :-( |

the_hero wrote: If England does what they easily can do (play football) they will go through with Sweden... Sweden is VERY strongAgreed. Larsson (if fit) and Ibrahimovic is a deadly pairing! And they have a good goalkeeper as well... English manager uis Swedish, isn't he? It will be interesting... ;) England should easily go through and without too muchj trouble get to 1/4, but... I can't see them winning this tournament... Not with beckham being captaina nd Eriksson being a manager... Oh, and there's Peter Crouch as well... |
