YES: It is corporate tat which could have been so much better. NO: As a 1975 LP the DVD should not contain post '75 clips of Brian on a Palace roof, or indeed allow Paul Rodgers (vicariously) to share in perhaps Freddie's finest hour. However, what about those hidden gems like the 'Death On Two Legs' piano only demo included on the DVD menu? Is this worth anything at all? |

I don't know yet John, I just ordered my copy (against my better judgement), so I'll let you know what I reckon when it arrives next week. How's the bionic shoulder by the way? |

They didn't put bouns stuff on ROTC DVD and we've got just one cut show on one CD, but for the good price. Okay. Deal. Now they put "bonus stuff" and we've got something what didn't want and didn't asked for, and for the bad price. In Russia it sells for 40 euros. 40 euros for one short snippet in DVD menu... I hope my boss would never know that I spend my money in the way like that :) |

I am a bit dissapointed too, as I have read that the live footage is only accompanying the studio versions of the songs. But hey, any visuals pre-80's are something to look forward to... |

Paul Rodgers is NOT on the ANATO DVD... I know you said "vicariously" John, but why mention it when he's not there? No harm. And I don't think that is a piano demo of Death On Two Legs on the monu, just the piano from the finished multitrack. |

(Besides as you say no harm because I did write vicariously). 2: You are correct. It is isolated piano from the multi-track. (I think I have got my self into trouble before in similar territory!). However, it does sound different and demo-like - so still a bit of a gem anyway;-) |
Daz85 24.11.2005 17:11 |
hehe! I don't think there is any problem using Brian from the ROTC DVD ('39 not LOML by the way!), as Brian is Brian and no matter what footage he's plucked from it's still him! |
John S Stuart 24.11.2005 17:27 |
Yes; That's what I meant '39 - sorry! |
Bohardy 24.11.2005 18:38 |
Whilst the piano-track from the menu isn't a demo, it's still a 'hidden gem', though a gem of the minutest size. It IS the isolated piano-track from the intro of the original master, but it carries on past the point at which it is cut on the CD, allowing us to hear Fred noodling around for 3 more chords. I've had a good listen to the DTS channels from the original, and it's definitely *new* piano, and is not just something that was buried deep in the mix on the original. And was the fact that We Are The Champions was written before ANATO fairly common knowledge? I'd never heard that before. |

He is the gold standard of informative Queen fans as far as I'm concerned. Having said that, though, I do think the above-quoted remark is unfair and flimsy criticism. Given what the release is and given what we all know it *could* have been, it seems like an insubstantial complaint somewhat directed at a bystander, when there is *so* many more substantial and wholly deserved critiques to be made. In short, QP just cocked up this release, and the fact that it contains some footage of Brian May playing alone onstage from the ROTC DVD is the least of its problems. A bit like telling someone with terminal cancer that, by the way, he also has split ends. That's just my opinion though. Hope that doesn't permanently put me on your bad list, John. |

Regarding Brian from ROTC DVD used during '39... ...Brian has stated, more than once, that due to the fact this song is about time travel, he thought it was quite fitting to be able to include old footage of himself/Queen playing the song and new footage of himself playing the song, as it fits with the theme of the lyrics and fits well with the theme of the video also. I have not thought once there is anything wrong with this. I have in no way thought that this is a shameless plug towards the current tour either. I think it is fair to say that some have to push the thoughts of Queen+ PR out of their minds when trying to analyse parts of this DVD (no offence intended to anyone, it is clearly an innocent statement made from partial observations, in my opinion, of course). I know we are all a little dissapointment with by this so-called "anniversary" edition that most of us could have produced on our home computers in one way or another, but I think that some are trying to find extra excuses to dislike this new product. Look at it this way - if they'd wanted to be as disrespectful as to subliminally plug Q+PR, then they wouldn't have had a problem with popping a couple of leaflets for discount We Will Rock You tickets would they (which they didn't for the first time since Video Hits One or something). |

Because "...didn't feel it fitted at the time" There's one funny moment in commentaries when Freddie's trying to recall what is the title of the George Fomby-style song! ("Good Company") |

A bit like telling someone with terminal cancer that, by the way, he also has split ends. The biggest surprise for me, was all about expectation. The disc is really well described on 'Play.com', and by fans both in here and 'Queenonline', so I purchased with eyes wide open - knowing full well beforehand what I had bought. So I should have been prepared. But I wasn't. I still find the 'Return Of The Champions' footage so far from the mark of the original concept, that it just sticks out like a tree in the south pole, and it's not until one actually views it, that the unsuitability sinks in. I know that the lyric reads; "Don't you hear my call though your many years away", and that the song is about time-travel, and that Brian electronically duets with himself - 30 years apart, so I can see WHY it fits, it's just that I don't like HOW it fits! I do like your comparison: "Brian May playing alone onstage from the ROTC DVD is the least of its problems. A bit like telling someone with terminal cancer that, by the way, he also has split ends". All I can say is that I noticed a few moths the cancer problem, and no matter however trivial, I never really noticed the split-ends problem, untill I actually sat down and watched the damn thing! |
