Freddie's #1 Fan Forever 23.11.2005 01:12 |
I have noticed that a lot of Queen fans say that they hate hip hop. That does not seem very open minded to me and I am kind of disappointed by this. People say that hip hop isn't music, but why not? I just think that maybe people who do not like hip hop just simply do not have any sense of rhythm. Just as some people are tone deaf, I wonder if others are not "rhythm" deaf. In other words, they just really don't have any feel or appreciation for rhythm. On the other hand, I will say that Queen seemed to be one of the few bands that understood rhythm. In particular, I think that Freddie really knew how to put the emphasis on the off beat. "Under Pressure" is probably the best example of this. |
Freddie's #1 Fan Forever 23.11.2005 01:21 |
By the way, I was also really disappointed that the "killer Queen" tribute album did not have any hip hop or black artists. I wonder what happened. If Jay-Z had been involved, for instance, he probably would have come up with something interesting. |

ropeyjoe 23.11.2005 05:21 |
I personaly think that the reason most queen fans hate hip hop is because the were brought up in a completely different enviroment music wise. The music they would have been listing to would have been influenced heavely by rock and previous genre's and so when Hip-Hop finnaly got a bit of recognision they shunned it immediatly. I guess they're thinking where's the guitar and where the HECK are the vocals!! Mind you Rock and Hip-Hop blend a treat if done right.(POD, Linkin Park and Jay Z etc.) |
MelissaHawke 23.11.2005 05:34 |
I LOVE Queen but i also like hip hop so u cant say that queen fans are not opened minded |
GreatKingSam 23.11.2005 05:57 |
Majority of people are very close minded when it comes to this kind of debate. I personally think it is stupid that people can turn around and say "I hate rap", when, at the end of the day, they are just following the mass opinion. They are intitled to not like it, yes, but sometimes people dislike it for pointless reasons. There are certain people on this message board, no names mentioned (Queen Of Wrestling), who cannot understand that even if they hate it, it doesnt give them the right to go around preaching that it is shit and bad and no-one should listen to it. Opinions are opinions, but some people are just thick. I predominantly am a rock fan, new and old, including The Beatles, Zeppelin, Buddy Holly, Velvet Revolver, Jimi Hendrix, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Rage, Audioslave, Queen obviously, Muse, Darkness etc, also like some lighter stuff like Michael Jackson etc, yet I also am a very big fan of rap too (Eminem, Dr Dre, Jay Z, Tupac etc) and dont find anything wrong with this. I have to say though, one of my favourite other bands, and I know loads of people hate them for petty reasons too, is Limp Bizkit. As someone said, there is something about the mesh of rock and rap that works (Rage Against The Machine too). |
john bodega 23.11.2005 06:40 |
There was no hip-hop on the Killer Queen album because it sucks. A lot of Queen fans don't like hip-hop, because it sucks. Actually... to be honest, I really don't give a damn about hip-hop. It's not the worst kind of music around, but by the same token the majority of it is just dead boring, the kind of crap you use to put kids to sleep or whatever. Like with all music, you have to dig around to find anything interesting. |

My father used to work at a roller disco rink and he watched how rap was born. Rap was started by DJ's talking between songs. When that became popular, MC's (master of ceremony) started being appointed. I hate hip hop music mostly because of the song quality.Take the candy shop song.Would you honestly want your 8 year old singing that? In contrary of my first point, Get Down Make Love and Tie Your Mother Down aren't the best family songs but still. I have never heard a Queen song use "bitch" "ho" (in Life Is Real he said "loving like a whore) Queen simply portrays a better message for people to follow. What can be gained by trying to act ghetto? And Great King Sam, are you aware you argued with a 16 year old for 3 days? |
GreatKingSam 23.11.2005 09:28 |
Yes thank you. Simple - if you don't like rap, don't listen to it, but just becuase you don't like it, doesn't mean that it is therefore certified as bad music, thats what you dont seem to understand. |

In response to Queen of Wrestlings comment about why rappers try to act ghetto. Once again I stress that it is a cultural thing. The reason many rappers try to act ghetto is because (oh what a Shock!!,) they are infact from the ghetto and only "singing" about what is/ or was relevant to them and thier audience at that stage of thier lives and clearly there is alot to gain by "acting" ghetto because while all those rappers are flying around the world in learjets most of us are working cheap day jobs. Oh and song quality will differ just as much in Hip Hop as it does in any other form of art. |

Nothing more than a rhythm and poor lyrics in your opinion, yes. Others think that hip-hop is quite good. Some of it (cough Ja Rule cough) is pathetic, some is actually quite good, lyrically and musically (Tupac lyrics were more like poetry in places, for instance). |

I think it does relate to the enviornment and what pepople can relate to. In hip-hop videos the background enviornment, is different than in rock videos. Let's see.....and NONE of these reasons have ANY thing to do with me being a fan of Queen,... .... just my own opinions about hip/hop as a form of music? or whatever the hell it claims to be. It's overtly misogynist towards women, it glorifies the ''thug'' life of drugs, violence, beating and disrespecting women, killing police, every other word is profanity, while it sometimes does have inventive/ryming use of lyrics,...every rapper on the planet seems to have an inability to write their own music and all sample other artists (at 1st this seemed like a homage to artists they admire, but SO much rap and hip/hop uses sampling that it comes off to me as lazy and that hip hop artists have no talent/ability to write any music of their own). It's repetitive. It's often racist. It is not music (to me in my opinion) not because of all of the above, but because in the 1950's, there was something in the beatnik New York Greenich Village area clubs called ''spoken word'', which were arists speaking in ryhme, to a beat usualy at that time played on bongos. It had no real melody/harmony/orchestrated structure or arrangement (JUST LIKE HIP/HOP), but they KNEW to then NOT call it music. It was a form of artistic performance art called spoken word. To me hip/hop and rap ARE SPOKEN WORD, NOT music! |

I've heard a lot of very positive and inspiring lyrics in rap music, but they are usually not in the mainstream. What you described is mainstream rap. I totally agree with those who say that rap is not music. It is an art form. Arts by definition are forms of self-expression, and rap can certainly qualify. However, in my opinion, music requires instrumentation and melody. You will never meet a serious musician who takes rap to be a form of music worth investing into. Most rap music has very little musicality to it, and does nothing to challenge musicians. But again, the same can be said about 99% of today's commercially popular rock and pop as well. |

As a social expression I respect hip hop and its artists, but I can't stand to listen to it. What I have heard sounds m-o-n-o-t-o-n-e to me. Plus I don't want to expend that much time and energy on trying to understand (any) lyrics, so I have no idea what they are singing about. It just doesn't move me, and there is no crime in that. Ain't it wonderful there are so many music genres around - enough for all of us. Last night I watched an Etta James dvd (she's a black blues singer maybe in her 60's now). Geez - incredible! |
ropeyjoe 23.11.2005 12:54 |
Ok point taken so you do agree that it is an artform because you refer to the beatnicks as artists and rap as the spoken word. So in "your opinion", it is a way for the artist to exspress themselves and thier ideals. I mean I guess I know where you're coming from but like I said some people will resent another artform while others will apreciate it. Like people enjoy queen because thier songs sound really awsome and while some other bands my come close to it nobody will ever play quite the same as the do and thats all good and well but there is a generation in mexico and as well as around the world who like rage against the machine because of what the stand for and because thier music sounds good..( I just use them as an example). |

It is a large generalsiation when people say that all rap is about is drugs, and making women look bad, and all the "bling bling". That, as a description, is almost the "commercial" description of rap. If you look past fakes (for want of a better word) such as Ja Rule, Lil Bow Wow and all these hangers on, you do find some though provoking stuff. Eminem, despite what people think, is a genious, as were NWA, as was Tupac, as is a fella called The Game. All of these people have in some way changed or influenced a lots. Even The Streets are a brilliantr act. And when people talk about the videos and how they criticise women and illustrate them as objects... the environments they find themselves in are exactly as they describe, and the women they find themselves with want exactly what they get, so it's not like they're respectable women in the first place anyways. |
Mr.Jingles 23.11.2005 13:21 |
Let's put it on the words of Chris Rock "Back in the days when we had Public Enemy, NWA, and Tupac you could defend hip-hop on an intellectual level." Not anymore. Hip-hop for the most part has become nothing but a corporate machine of a low life style which serves no message, purpose, or concept. The great majority of mainstream hip-hop artists are nothing but an embarassment to all the black musicians who created jazz, blues, soul, R&B, pop and rock n' roll to give shape to what has become of popular music for the past 100 years. |

I don't care for hip hop myself, but I can always enjoy a good laugh from watching R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet" series or the Ludicris "Get Back" video. It's pure comedy to me. As far as listening to it on the radio...I wouldn't be caught dead listening to rap in my car. Not because I'm white or anything, it just sucks. I mean, it's loud, bass filled, single beat, and most importantly NO GUITAR!!! It just doesn't suit me. I would agree that it is more of an art than music. |

There´s no´vocal register, they just talk/speak so, how the heck could the hip hop/rap interpreters be singers????.... IT´s not posssible to translate to a Pentagram...it´s a shame...I agree with Arlene R. Weiss, it has no structure...I like Rock, a little bit of Swing, Pop(come on, evryone once in their lifes like it), and original music of my country..but hip hop or rap...please..what´s the point on listening to that? I agree with people who said that there are few rappers who have positive messages, but by the time you could listen to those messages, IT´s ALREADY TIME TO LISTEN TO A ROCK SONG, SPECIALLY BY QUEEN....is my english good? Cheers. |

Queen fans aren't against hip hop music. Maybe some of them just don't like it since it's not their kind of music. Personally I'm into rock music, I like all rock groups from the 60s and 70s, and Queen is my favourite of them all. I don't like hip hop since I feel like it's sometimes too superficial, for example if you watch a 50 cent video all you see is this huge dude with fake muscles and oil all over his body, plus all those f*cking half naked horny chicks everywhere. And all he says in his songs is the same: "Yeah, yeah, I'm hot, I like to be drunk and to fuck all around, I do drugs, I'm rich" bla bla bla... This is pure shit to me. If only hip hop was real, an artistic music without being so superficial, like rock music is to me, maybe I'd like it better...but that's only my opinion |

Back like 3 years ago, I was a rap fan. I had the eminem show cd. Yeah, at first i liked it because it made me one of the "guys" but I specifically remember holding a eminem cd in my left hand, a red hot chili pepper cd in my right, I looked at the eminem show and said, "you know what, this is not what I am really like and this is not how I want people to know me." On the topic of racism, why is it ok for a white person to get called "whitey" "cracker" "wigger" "white boy" and yet the second a white person lets a "nigger" "gook" or whatever slip, it's automatically racism? |

These are the days of our lives We did the first 3 so everyone could identify the band, number 4 to give people a taste of a non greatest hit song, we let Matt (guitarrist 2) do 5 and 6 was dedicated to Coach and his wife.
