I just finished reading Mercury and Me last night. I cried through the last two chapters.I felt so sorry for Jim Hutton.I was very suprised at the way Mary treated him and that she didnt like him. It was a very interesting book.It really gave you a good sense about what Freddie was like. Jim really loved him and his portrayal of Freddie showed that he was human and had his faults but he was also very kind, generous and loving. I actually liked it better than Peter Freestone's book. |

yes thats the word emotional!! and yes mary sucks at the end, some days i wonder if she ever love or like freddie(or she just wanted all his money) thats why when i hear death on two legs , i think of her. after freddie fie she send people to cleann garden lodge, that should be keep like that! in honor of freddie not to clean it up. well i'm sorry for going off!!!! |
its_a_hard_life 04.11.2005 12:02 |
Ok Mary has to bring cleaners in as the mansion will get very dirty just like anyone elses... As for Jim saying she hated him and all that i think hes exaggerating abit, thats just what i think... |

I think you have to take it with a grain of salt. We're dealing with the opinion of one of the two loves of Freddie's life. I read in an interview with Mary in the late 90's that it took her 5 years after Freddie's death to even sleep in the master bedroom. She hadn't changed anything in the house, because she wanted everything to be as Freddie had left it. You can also tell that Jim didn't like Mary, as in his book, he refers to her simply as "the secretary at Goose Productions" instead of something more appropriate. And in the end, Jim got $100,000 and a house in Ireland, Mary got $20,000,000 and Garden Lodge. Wouldn't you be bitter? Considering that Freddie's will was last done a week before he died, I don't think this share was an oversight. There may have been things going on that we still don't know about. Nobody can even agree who was in the room when Freddie died. According to Jim, it was he and Peter Freestone. According to Mary, it was her and Freddie's parents. Others say his parents didn't make it in time. According to everyone else it was only Dave Clark that was there at that moment. It really doesn't matter in the end, but you can see how the truth may be hard to find where egos and book sales profits come into play. |

Sorry to burst all your bubbles but i feel that Jim is just jealous of Mary that Freddie gave her mostly everything the house and everything in it, thats alot... |

Mary and Jim never got on..End of! There are 2 sides to the story and nobody will ever know the truth...Jim was nasty towards Mary in the book and that..But that is proberly cos they didnt get on...I dont believe that she would of been that nasty to them like he said they she was when she told them that they had to leave Garden Lodge, but on the other hand she might of been like that because of pressure she was under and grief that Freddie had died might of got all on top of her and she was finding it hard to cope. It is a very very good book.. I laughed, I cried. And i couldnt put it down the both times i read it. The parts that made me laugh was when they would have there little poofy arguments and freddie would do all the name calling and all that hahahaha that made me chuckle...And i also love the way that Jim described that at home freddie..Very loving generous and fun to be around.. Good book..!!! I also like peters book, but i do find Mercury and me a better read... Take care x x |

I also think because Mary had children and I believe Freddie was a godparent to the first born that he would want Garden Lodge for them.It would be put to better use. If Jim got it he would have had a new boyfriend living there at some point which Im sure Freddie would not want. He had no dependents so whats the point of leaving it to him. This way Freddie knew the house would be used for a family that he loved. |

hi everybody where could i possibly get a copy of this book? I live in hungary and it seems to be out of print here. thanks a lot |

I liked both books a lot. Who did Freddie love more - Mary or Jim? Both of them, but differently, I would say. Jim Hutton seemed to value his independence and didn't want a free ride, and I have never read that he was dissatisfied with Freddie's will. At first I thought it was heartless for Mary to evict the entourage from Garden Lodge so soon. But what is the definition of "soon?" When you inherit property, it is your responsibility in every way - its value and safety. I cannot imagine the extreme emotional distress all who knew Freddie must have felt as he declined; plus they had to keep it secret. It ain't so easy being a caretaker - it can shred you to pieces. Peter Freestone was truly a great friend - right to the end. |

Queen books don't seem to be readily available in the USA either - not even in libraries. Check Amazon.com, also. |

I trust Freddie's choice. He wanted her to have it all, so that is all that matters. |
