I have a lovely 12" Paiste splash at home, makes a great little sound, but I've got a nice set of Zildjian hi-hats, a huge crash-ride and a simple crash, and there is just something about them that I love.
I like my Paiste, but it seem so much thicker than the Zildjians (even though it obviously isnt). But thats just my opinion.
If you want cheap cymbals, look on eBay. Serious, I've never had a bad cymbal experience on here.
One of my local shops had a nice Zildjian section - they had a set of hi-hats, a crash and a ride for around £500, except they were titanium silver with bronze logos and they were beautiful.
But I love custom Zildjians. John Otto has a lovely huge silver China with blue logos, and he has beautiful silver hi-hats with red logos also. And Joey Jordeson has or used to use silver and white zildjians with black logos.
Speaking of Zildjian, I've just bought some new sticks, 7A's with a purple wax dip, they're really nice, but they do tent to rub around the outside of my index fingers and the base of other fingers - anyone else find this?
Zildjian all the way. Although they are expensive they'll be amazing. Pretty much all the rock drummers use them and they just have the best quality because they've had the company for over 400 years. That's a pretty long time.
On a slightly off-topic, yet still drum related point...
...I've just bought three toms, with those spade socket things for connecting to a rack - anyone know where to get a decent cheap three tom holder rack? I've been monitoring eBay but nothing that suits me yet.
Help would be appreciated.
I am no drummer, if you think I am one, Alex :P
I did percussion in wind ensemble and couldn't play the set if my life depended on it (though if my life did depend on it, I'd be trying pretty damn hard!). ;)
Still, we had Zildjian and then crap ones (though sometimes the 'crap' ones yeilded darker tones which we sometimes needed instead).
Zildjian = Uber-awesome. End of story.
Check out El Presidente. Their album comes out on 24th and I dont expect many around here will have heard of them, but I saw them supporting Electric Six and they were really good.
They've got a female drummer, and I think she is damn hot. Just keep an eye out. Actually, their keyboard player is pretty hot too...
Sam, you're not wrong.
I've just gone scouting, and although there's a shocking paucity of decent photos of her on the net, I can confirm that Dawn Zhu would undeniably get it. A lot.
Oriental ladies make my world go round.
lol, with the "girl drummers rule" or w/e my brother plays the drums and he's taught me a bunch of stuff. I can play the drum beat to Purple Haze. It's pretty cool. I've never seen a girl drummer that's played with someone famous at a concert. But the drums are fun.
To be honest, Dawn from El Presidente isn't the greatest drummer, and she is very mechanical, but maybe that's just her "persona".
There's Meg White too. Now, she gets trashed coz she is boring, but I'll be damned if her beats are anything but perfect for the songs.
I cannot for the life of me think of any other girl drummers. Its not sexist in anyway, but I just don't really listen to music with girls in. Its just something weird I've recently noticed.
I'm exactly the same Sam.
Don't own a single album by a woman. The only CDs I have that feature women (apart from Barcelona) are a few jazzy/funky/dancey/hip-hoppy ones which have guest female vocalists.
Female drummers?
- Melissa auf der Mar (was in Hole. Think they've got another female drummer now).
- Caroline Corr
- Karen Carpenter
- the drummer from The 5,6,7.8s (bonus points for being Oriental)
- ummm, Evelyn Glennie. The 'deaf' percussionist.
