Dear Janet :-)
My quaker parrot plucked one of his tail feathers and made himself bleed. Should I be worried about him getting infected? Also what's the appropiate way to clean him whenever he's injured.
Mr. Jingles...He might have plucked a blood feather. As long as the feather is fully out and the bleeding has stopped, he should be fine. If he is stained with blood at all, a spray bottle with warm water set on a fine mist should do the trick, it will just gradually fade as he grooms himself. As far as treating a wound, well I am fortunate that I've never had to to that with my birds. Probably dabbing the area with warm water would be the best since I'm not sure what anticeptics are toxic to birds (I think Bactine might be okay). Probably a phonecall to a vet would be in order if it was a large wound.
Thanks a lot Janet!
My quaker seems OK. I got scared when I saw the blood at the bottom of his cage because for a small bird even some drops of blood seem like a lot. At first I thought he got himself injured with something, but then I noticed that the tip of the feather he plucked was all covered with blood. I cleaned him a bit with water (although he wasn't very pleased) and the bleeding stopped.
