So is the Under Pressure rah mix and Invisble Man. The only one I agree on is 'Body Language'. It's too sleazy for my liking. |

I think maybe their selections on singles are part of the reason why they were never popular in the states Hot Space + |

I can think of only 3 which never should have been released: - Body Language (and they seem to agree, as it's the only UK hit not to appear on any of the UK compilations) - You Don't Fool Me - "Another One Bites The Dust" Wyclef Jean version. |

This whole topic is incredibly silly... "In hindsight, which singles Queen didn't want to release?" Well obviously the ones that didn't sell very well!! My list isn't the 10 worst Queen singles of all time... It's a list of songs that weren't IMO the best single choices in their respective albums. So if you have a lousy album like the Works, it just isn't possible to find better singles than RGG, IBTBF, IAHL, HTF... TGIG on the other gets beaten by just about anything the band has ever come up with. |

It had 3 top 10 UK hits and 4 top 20 UK hits and topped the charts in 19 countries. |

Half of The Works is uninspired pop songs which will guarantee it to sell well in the early 80's, and the other half is nothing more than standard album fillers. To get back to my earlier point about no better singles being available... These are the other songs on the Works album, none of which would have had any chance as a single: Tear It Up - Lousy lyrics, too heavy, no chorus. Machines - No melody. Man On The Prowl - Wrong genre to ever chart as a single! Keep Passing Open Windows - There is something seriously wrong with a song whose only strong point is the intro/bridge. Other than that it has nothing to be interested in. Is This The World We Created - Can anybody honestly see this as a single? |

I actually don't own the works (or AKOM) I'm really poor lol and can't invest in something I most likely won't listen to. The funny thing is I listen to nothing but LP's and can't afford to buy second hand LP's of them lol. I've heard the songs and they strike me as mediocre. Not horrible but not great. The same about AKOM, both have good songs. |

You Don't Fool Me - I actually dig this song. But his voice isn't at it's top in this (sorry to say, he does a fantastic job of the higher bits but he just doesn't sound his best). The main problem with that song for me is it's instrumentation. It's so synth heavy. If they'd rocked it up a bit (like Another One Bites the Dust Live) it mighta sounded better. I won't pick on it's repetitive nature because Roger and Brian put this together from very tiny scraps done in 1991. Staying Power was a single, right? I hate that song, it's more like S-s-sudio than anything. Like the other Hot Space songs, better instrumentation would've saved it. I have to say I mostly agree with their single releases though. It doesn't help that I like nearly all of Queen's music though. |
Lester Burnham 05.10.2005 12:11 |
'Tie Your Mother Down' was way too heavy to have been released. 'You And I' would've been a far better substitute. 'Body Language' should not only have ever been released as a single, it never should have existed. I know it was a No. 11 hit in the US, but that doesn't make it a good song by any stretch of the imagination. Same with 'Bicycle Race' - sorry, can't stand it. If it had been 'Fat Bottomed Girls' backed with, say, 'If You can't Beat Them', then that would've been a great single release. Alternately, I don't know why 'Stone Cold Crazy' never came out as a single. I think it would've done better than 'Now I'm Here'. And I really think 'Keep Passing The Open Windows', if edited down properly, would've been a great single, maybe instead of 'Hard Life' - don't get me wrong, that's a great song, but a bit too personal for the singles charts. Freddie should've kept it on Mr. Bad Guy, honestly, and given Queen 'Love Kills' or something. |

tie you mother down was to heavy to be released as a single, but stone cold crazy wasn't. ok lester, your sounding real smart now. |

Body Language- biggest s**t Queen ever recorded... IMO of course... Thank God It's Xmas- very avarage and unimaginative song- and as we already had 4 other sngles in 1984... The Invisible Man- replace it with "Was It All Worth It"- much better song I'm Going Slightly Mad- great video but song... nothing special... Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy (as E.P.)- You And I or even White Man as A-side... "Calling All Girls:- another poor song from Hot Space... |
john bodega 06.10.2005 11:29 |
Bicycle Race is *NOT* a bad song. It's technically brilliant! That doesn't equate to 'easy listening' though, so it's totally understandable why some people find it annoying. It's in the same vein as Mustapha in that regard - technically, very interesting with lots of neat bits - but some people can't stand it. I support Body Language as a single merely because of the reaction it evokes in Queen fans, back then and even today. It's truly remarkable. |
