Hi! I've just listened to SHA (album) recently and I was embarrased by the strange (or better awkward) "Lap Of The Gods" (NOT "revisited") . It could have been a fine song with a catchy melody if they had only recorded it in the right tempo ;-). And without Roger's panicky yell at the beginning. And without the strange fade-out/fade-in after that. And without the "cheap synthesizer"-like cymbals. And then Roger again yelling his lungs out towards the end. The end is somewhat strange also, like starting a segue to the next song without a proper connection. Very strange song in many ways. Which Queen song do you think is the most awkward? Bye, Nummer2 |

Two Sharp Pencils is the oddest, most "out there" Queen-related release, in my opinion. WTF was that all about? |
The prophet's song 28.09.2005 21:19 |
The thing I find most odd is at the very end of one vision. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE that song, but why do they say 'Gimme gimme gimme fired chicken' at the end. It has no relevance to the song whatsoever. or does it... Maybey they had all been working so hard on the song they were all ready for a bucket of KFC or somthing |

in the lap of the gods is a classic. great vocal harmonies, and guitar sound. the screams at the end of the song is great, maybe the scream in the opening they could have done without. |

A few remarks to LOTG: I think it's a great song in its basic idea, but it is arranged in a very unexpected if not queer way. A catchy melody, dramatic development towards the end – but why did they experiment so much instead of doing a rather logical version with a typical Freddie vocal part, background choir effects and without the overdone effects. It's a pity IMO. |

@ It's_a_hard_life FFMS is easy – it just describes a painting by Richard Dadd. Nonsense, but beautiful. MOTBQ is very difficult to interprete, the meaning is clear I think (man enslaved to woman and his struggle to come to terms with her), but in detail it's a kind of a riddle. I found a very interesting essay abouzt the lyrics on a website that's not available anymore. Here's the text (in two parts because it's too long): ---------- MARCH OF THE BLACK QUEEN The song "March Of The Black Queen" forms sort of a couple with the song "White Queen". Both songs are from the same album, Queen II. This album is well known for its White Side (featuring among others White Queen) and its Black Side (featuring March Of The Black Queen), as opposed to the usual A and B sides. White Queen was written by Brian May, and like we are somewhat used from Brian this song is about the sad end of a relationship. It is beyond the scope of analysing March Of The Black Queen to completely analyse White Queen as well, but the main point here is that White Queen is about a wonderful relationship that sadly ends. Written by Freddie Mercury, in March Of The Black Queen we see the opposite: the relationship is far from wonderful, yet it continues. This song is much more sarcastic, and has another unusual aspect: usually, when a song is about a bad relationship, it is the man who is being the bad guy. Not here: the song tells about the power that a certain woman have with regard to her man, and all the stupid things that this man does to please his woman. Note: I assume that Freddie meant this text to be taken with a grain of salt. Please read this analysis in a similar way ;-) Do you mean it Do you mean it Do you mean it Why don't you mean it Why do I follow you and where do you go The man is asking himself whether his love really means all the things she does and tells. These can be either good things (causing him not to trust her, considering the circumstances we will later find out about) or bad things (making him ask why she is behaving so awful to him). He wonders why he is still running after her, while he has no idea what she is up to and where this relationship is taking him. He is blinded by love, and although his common sense tells him to think a bit more about himself, he keeps following her. You've never seen nothing like it no never in your life Like going up to heaven and then coming back alive Let me tell you all about it - And the world will so allow it The man continues, trying to explain his mixed feelings. At first sight, it seems like the comparison to heaven is to show how beautiful love is. However, keeping the overall thought of the song in mind, I think we should see the "going up to heaven" as death, as a metaphor for a very bad thing. Then, "coming back to life" would be the opposite. In other words: it's ups and downs in love. This continues in the next lines: Oooh give me a little time to choose Water babies singing in a lily-pool delight Blue powder monkeys praying in the dead of night The man has to choose whether or not he wants to continue the relationship. On one side, there is this wonderful woman, who is poetically compared to water babies singing in a lily-pool delight. Try to imagine little pieces of water (a nice spring rain!) falling into a pool filled with lilies: now isn't that a delight? On the other side, there are the blue powder monkeys praying in the dead of night. "Powder monkey" is a slang expression for a person who carries or sets explosives (the word comes from old navigation, where it was a boy employed on war vessels to carry gunpowder). A "blue powder monkey" would then be a sad person (as in "having the blues") whose mind is in an explosive state. He's praying in the dead of night for all of this to end. The man has to choose which of these two options he prefers in the way he sees himself |

MARCH OF THE BLACK QUEEN ... continued: Black on, black on every finger nail and toe We've only begun - begun Make this, make that, keep making all that noise Ooh march to the Black Queen With black nail polish both on her fingers and toes, the image of the woman is made even darker and more mysterious. And the story is only just beginning: she tells him what to do, how he has to march to her orders. Now I've got a belly-full You can be my sugar baby, you can be my honey chile, yes Finally, we see some resistance from the man. He's got a "belly-full", an expression to show that he's had enough of it. Unfortunately, love is strong, and he immediately sees again how sweet she can be. Why? Read on: A voice from behind me reminds me Spread out your wings you are an angel Remember to deliver with the speed of light A little bit of love and joy Everything you do bears a will and a why and a wherefore A little bit of love and joy The voice from behind him is a voice from his past. It is the voice of a wonderful woman he once knew: his mother. He remembers how she told him that he could be anything he wants to be (compare to what is said in "Innuendo": just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be). He also remembers how she kept telling him that he had to be a good person, to bring a bit of love and joy among the people. There is an explanation for each and every action of each and every person. Everybody is driven by a will, which should be to bring that little bit of love and joy. These memories make that the man keeps seeing all the good in the woman, and again he surrenders to her demands. In each and every soul lies a man And very soon he'll deceive and discover But even to the end of his life He'll bring a little love As his mother told him, every man is only human and sooner or later he will make a mistake and discover the power of deceit by deceiving someone himself. But a good man will never let the bad influences win, and even to the end of his life he'll bring a little love. I reign with my left hand I rule with my right I'm lord of all darkness I'm Queen of the night I've got the power Now do the march of the Black Queen Here is the bad woman again. She reigns the man, putting him in darkness. She has the power to make him do the March of the Black Queen: to dance to her tune. My life is in your hands, I'll fo and I'll fie I'll be what you make me, I'll do what you like I'll be a bad boy, I'll be your bad boy I'll do the march of the Black Queen He will do anything she asks him to do, even if she wants him to behave badly. That's how confusing love can be. Walking true to style she's vulgar 'buse and vile Fie-Fo the Black Queen tattoos all her pies She boils and she bakes and she never dots her i's Like you would expect from her style of behaviour, the woman is vulgar and mean. She tattoos all her pies, which can be explained in two ways. Neither of these two ways has anything to do with pastry though. First, a pie is a monetary unit formerly in use in India and Pakistan; so here we have link to Freddie's background. If Fie-Fo tattoos all her pies, she would put her mark on every bit of money of the man. In other words: she's spending all his money. Second, a pie is an almanac of services used in the English church before the Reformation. If this were what is meant here, tattooing all her pies would mean that Fie-Fo stigmatises the man with her rules. She can boil (so she can be very hot-tempered) and she can bake (she can be in the kitchen preparing a nice meal for her man), but whatever she does, she never dots her i's: she never finishes what she was doing, so her mood can change in a minute from boiling to baking and back. Forget your sing-a-longs and your lullabies Surrender to the city of the fireflies Dance to the devil in beat with the band To hell with all of you hand-in-hand But now it's time to be gone |

I love listening to the song. I love "Mother Love" song, but in the very end they turn the baby yelling sound, and it's so annoying, you know? I also find the beginning of "Death on two legs" too hard for me, when there is a big crescendo and suddenly short pause, it's so loud and actually making me ache my ears, so i rather omit that beginning. Haven't listened to the first version of Lap of The GOs yet. HOnestly, i'm not that keen on "Innuendo". I don't like the spanish motives in the song and actually it's a freaky song for me. At first, I thought Mustapha was nonsense. I mean, complete nonsense. From the song structure to the lyrics. Complete, absolute nonsense. Some day one day, I...thought: well, maybe it isn't nonsense. lol The answer I got was on the Album Cover: Jazz. I thought: goddamn...it's a joke with...scat singing! Being a very self-conscious singer himself, I thought it wouldn't be absurd to think that Freddie wanted to poke some fun at the meaningless (in terms of verbal language) scat singing. So, bear with me (lol), just like in many Jazz impro or recordings, he put some phrases or names which do have a meaning, and then he went on doing pure vocals. Just vocals, without meaning: it's the singing for the sake of singing itself - like, if the nonsensical phrases sound good, and can be sung as to sound good and convincing and funny to one's ear, then it's worth trying. And he did it. If you think about it, it's brilliant. It does sound like he's speaking Arabic, but, at the same time, you figure out he's not but the singing fits the song and sounds good in that context, to the point of making us want to sing along! Ok, what Freddie did was, in my opinion, most humble insignificant opinion in the...Cosmos(!), was much more sophisticated than scat: it's much more close to vocalize than to scat - it's not as much like he's emulating an instrument, like Jazz scat singers often do. It's much more like he's really creating sounds intended to be sung, not played, that will fit the song even though they barely have any meaning, and looking at the whole, the vocalizing, as it does sound as if he were singing in Arabic, ends up fitting the songs' structure perfectly. The harmony, the melody, all is intended to give an Arabic feeling, and he pulls it all together and makes a very clever song. So, it's singing for the sake of it - it's pure singing. It's pure magic. lol [screaming hysterically] |
