This is taken from my recording made on my MP3 player, when I had the chance to talk to Peter Freestone, Freddie's assistant, who we all know. This was done on Wednesday, September 14th, this past week. I think you guys will find this interview interesting, and I think it will be better understood in this written, almost unedited form (save for a few "um's", and repeated words), than it would with the recording itself. Enjoy! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard: OK, My two questions...if Freddie were still alive...you know how he was a big fan of Japanese culture and stuff, right? Do you think if he was still alive, if he'd been able to at least see the surge in anime worldwide, Japanese animation, do you think he would've contributed a theme song to a show like "InuYasha" or "Gundam Seed"? Peter: Um, to my mind, I'm sure that Freddie would've been writing more music , and he would have been helping anybody he could in that way...(indistinguishable)...In particular, in the last few years he knew he had a short time left so everything, everything in his mind was devoted to Queen Richard: Yup Peter: Because you know, he didn't want everything just to finish just because he wasn't around anymore Richard: Yeah Peter: I think if he was alive now I'm sure he would've diversified, he would have had the time, and yes I'm sure he would have done things in Japan Richard: Yeah Peter: I mean that was his spiritual home, because he loved everything Japanese Richard: Yeah, and he even did a song in Japanese with Montserrat Caballe, "La Japonaise", and also "Teo Torriate" with Queen Peter: Yeah Richard: That's one of my favourite songs. Have you ever had the chance to listen to the remix from "Jewels II" CD? Peter: I haven't. I want to get a hold of it Richard: Can I send you a link to download it? Peter: Yes, that would be lovely Richard: And I think one more question, let's see if I can remember it, if not I'll just shoot it off to you on e-mail Peter: Forgive me if it's not answered immediately, because I'm having trouble getting on the Internet here Richard: [laughs] That's OK. There's always the library [both laugh] Peter: I'm useless at computers, I know what to do [mimicks typing on the keyboard in the air] but that's as far as it goes Richard: Oh, have you had a chance to see Queen and Paul Rodgers live yet? Peter: I've seen one show, um, back in Europe, and it was very interesting. I enjoyed it. It was different. It was exactly as Brian had said at the very beginning of the tour, "do not expect what Queen used to be, this is a new experience," and it was Richard: Yeah, and you can certainly tell by the bootlegs that were shared [Peter laughs] in the online community. If you ask me, I think we had some of the best bootlegs. It's just a shame that on the "Return Of The Champions" CD, they don't have "Under Pressure", you know? And not just that, but there's some overdubs, yeah. It's like they have an overdub fix, but can't blame 'em Peter: Because the thing is, if it's being released to the public, it has to be the best that they can give. You know that, it's always been like that with Queen's own sound Richard: Yeah Peter: You know, they will only be happy with the best Richard: Yeah, exactly. All right, well thank you so much Peter: It's my pleasure |

Richard, If it wouldn't be too much trouble to send this to me, I'd love to hear it! By the way Richard, Have you seen Cromartie High School? |

The anime theme songs, I mean how could Peter guess that Freddie would have written songs for those shitty B-movies. One of the worst questions ever. Useless but perhaps even worse is the person you asked it. I mean your not gonna ask a cardriver how to fly an airplain right? Further i think it was a good roling conversation (however I think the second question is also useless) |

However, I only asked them partly cos I wanted to ask something unique, instead of something so cliche like "What was Freddie like in real life?", which I pretty much already knew the answer(s) to. |

I fucking hate people who tell me what to do or not what to do. Besides, what else is there to ask that hasn't been asked? "Uh, Mr. Freestone, which hand did Freddie like to masturbate with?" 'nuff said Besides, I wanted to ask something DIFFERENT - is that a crime? |

I think it was a good interview. I have no idea what I'd ask Mr Freestone if given the chance. This is definately a story to share with your grandkids :-D |

<b><font color = "crimson">ThomasQuinn wrote: How about asking questions which have some relevance to the Queen-world in general instead of just yourself and your obsesive love of anime next time?I totally agree. That question was just retarded, and we all know by now that Freddie was not into any nerd hobbies like video games, cartoons, anime, or sci-fi flicks. I mean, he was a gay man for God's sake! and he basically liked what other gay men liked. You know, musicals, fashion, art, ballet, and all that stuff. On the other hand, that would have been a good question for Brian, who is actually into a lot of geek things. I remember once Brian mentioning that he liked to watch cartoons and anime series with his son Jimmy when he was a kid. |
inu-liger 20.09.2005 20:03 |
Interestingly enough, I shot off anime(-related) questions to Brian in the past, but no replies since he was "busy" |

Jingles (and others) you're not a bad guy.. but really, can't you try the old rule of "if you can't say anything good, don't say anything"? I mean what's the point except to take a stab at someone.. Richard has the right to ask people whatever he likes, and he was kind enough to share his experience here.. just a thank you would suffice :) |
Banquo 21.09.2005 14:30 |
I am so sorry I've been stopping myself from posting in ths topic I know how Dark gets a bit icky about me slagging him off but how can anyone say that was a good interview. What a crock of shit! If I had met him I wouldn't have asked him about Star Wars which is just the same as you asking him about Anime from Japan. Yeah Freddie was into fine art from Japan not kids programmes. |
inu-liger 21.09.2005 18:13 |
FFS, don't confuse anime with cartoons! Anime is not kid's stuff! If you'd seen Akira, Neon Genesis Evangelion or even InuYasha, for example, you'd see what I mean. Banquo, I dare you to watch those titles and tell me anime is kids stuff. And there are lots of mainstream J-POP or J-ROCK acts that record theme songs for anime, as it's a huge thing to do there, unlike here where you'd be considered "selling out" if you were a mainstream artist recording theme songs for "kiddie" shows (aka American cartoons) |
inu-liger 21.09.2005 18:15 |
And re: Star Wars...It wouldn't be a bad idea to ask Phoebe if Freddie really didn't like Star Wars, would it? |

Might want to ask him what Freddie thought about Superman too! he either really hated him, or REALLY, and I do mean REALLY LOVED SUPY! link |

Arlene R. Weiss wrote: Might want to ask him what Freddie thought about Superman too! he either really hated him, or REALLY, and I do mean REALLY LOVED SUPY! linkWell, I might have a chance to meet up with Phoebe again at the show in Ottawa this Sept. 28th, which is 3 days after I arrive in Ottawa for my vacation. I can afford it easily, it's just a question of when I'll be able to buy a ticket to the show through TicketMaster. We'll see. |

Banquo, I dare you to watch those titles and tell me anime is kids stuff.I have a 23 year old cousin completely obsessed with anime. It's an obsession she happens to share with all her friends, and I know she would never befriend someone who doesn't like anime. I have to say that even though they're in their 20s, they act like if they're still 10. Btw, I like a lot of anime, and I consider myself a fan of Hayao Miyazaki and all the movies from Studio Ghilbi, but I definitely try not to become obsessed about it. If I had the chance to interview Brian May, I seriously wouldn't ask him a Star Wars question (even when I know he's a Star Wars fan), for the simple reason that there's far more important Queen related questions that I could ask him. |
willem-jan 8923 23.09.2005 02:54 |
And still he's offering illegal mp3 files to people..... When will he learn this is not allowed. Apart from that, I think Freddie would have prevered writing music for a nice gay-porn movie over some stupid cartoon. |
LIZAWITHAZ 23.09.2005 08:33 |
LOL!!! Willem-Jan I have never laughed so hard after reading your lines above about Freddie. LOL! Are you ever dead on! I totally agree, after all why not contribute to something you can really get into (so to speak!) but quite honestly I think if Freddie were here he'd definitely be watching gay porn...after all what can old queens do when they are too old for the clubs like...ahem...me. Cheers, David |
