I was perusing the website of the boarding school Freddie went to for 7 years in India ( link ) and was quite amazed to find that the school crest and mascot is the phoenix, and that their crest bears striking resemblance to the phoenix in the Queen crest. Check it out! I've read in numerous articles that Freddie really didn't like to talk about or even acknowledge his Indian background, but I guess he must have had a soft spot for the old school after all. Outrageously, I can't find a single mention of him on the site. Read the section they have on the crest, and you may see why perhaps Freddie chose it, as well.
Actually, I don't think he counted as an alumnus, since he left for Britain before graduating. I can't find him under any name in the alumni section. Funny that Zanzibar, where Freddie spent much less of his early life than India, boasts that he's their native son.
No, he was born there because his father was posted there at the time. His people are from India. His family name, Bulsara hails from Bulsar on the northwest coast of India, his parents' home town. Also, for those who have seen the pic of he and Cashmira on the beach, that is Bulsar behind them.

Hey that's really cool. It's pity how rare it is to see any of Freddie's background in those things he does... i mean like in the crest and stuff. :) Oh i'm talking nonesense... What i ment to say is that I think is cool that he (maybe) used his old school crest in the Queen logo. Or at least got an idea from it...
Or maybe it is only a coincidence.
