Like i know to me and my fellow queen fans that they're the greatest band in the world..HELL YAH!! but they didnt even make such an impact as the beatles and zeppelin..queen could vocally out do any band and their guitar and bass and drums are just as good as zepp and better than beatles ( sorry beatles lol )they had such beautiful music and they would take u on adventures..i just think they should have made more of an impact..but come on..they did create bohemion rhapsody didnt they..haha well i was just wondering if everyone else agrees with me haha later .. |

You're a little, er, far too young to have experienced Queen's hay day this side of the globe, Deaky my boy. Queen were bigger in the States and Canada in the late 70's/early 80's, long before you were even a twinkle in your daddy's eye. You would have enjoyed it. All I can say is watch all of the old videos/concerts - it'll whet your whistle, even if you weren't here to live through it. But just think - you're gonna catch them on the crest of their second wave - so one wave is better than none, right? |

HELL YEAH THEY SHOULD BE!!!!!!!!!!! |
Captain Fap 17.08.2005 02:38 |
Their influence on the music world is there but it's just not as talked about as, oh say, Led Zeppelin. |
Ayreon 17.08.2005 08:51 |
Well their reputation is huge in Europe, maybe not in the states. The world concists of more places than the US, you know... |
its_a_hard_life 17.08.2005 09:02 |
Why didnt the USA agree with the video I Want To Break Free? Roger did say in an interview that after I Want To Break Free video that made them less popular in the USA. Will someone answer my question please, thank you. |
Breadman 17.08.2005 09:04 |
Yeah, they were definitely huge. I think about in the top 5-6 biggest selling bands of all time and arguably the greatest live band ever. Gods almost in England and to a lesser extent the rest of Europe. One of the biggest bands in South America and Japan. As for North America, they were obviously very big at one stage. I feel that if their status in America had continued as it was in the late seventies-early eighties and not sunken as it had during the later eighties, they would have been as big as Pink Floyd, maybe Zep, with regards to sales. I think that the discrepancy between the sales of these two bands and Queen can be accounted for in the states alone. I come from Australia, where they had a fairly good following, although could be better. Recently though, the local radio station in Melbourne that plays classic rock (50s-80s), had a big poster campaign(you know, slapping big posters against the sides of buildings) and one of them was a picture of Freddie singing in concert, I think from around the Works Tour. -Breadman link |

There's other places in the world outside of the U.S.? Gee - I didn't KNOW that Ayreon. I was referring to THIS part of the world (U.S. & Canada only) for Deaky Boy's benefit. Give ME a little credit here. Queen were, are, and will always be APPRECIATED more in other countries than the U.S., and for the life of me, I just can't figure out why. They've kept me entertained and motivated for over 30 years now, and there are others here in the U.S. that feel the same way...but for some unknown reason, we just don't have the masses of Queen fans that are present everywhere else in the world. If you hear the DJ's talk about Queen on U.S. radio stations - they all claim to love our boys. But, the generation of kids now (actually, the last generation, too) are too much into (c)rap music or whatever the hell they're listening to and they aren't getting exposed to anything with any diversity - which is the MAIN reason why I have remained a Queen fan this long - the music they create(d) gives one a lot of colors and flavors and variety. To me, it seems the bands out now are stuck in one genre - they only play one kind of music. Queen do rock, country, love songs/ballads, opera, pop, disco, the blues, flamenco...NOBODY, and I do mean NOBODY else can even come close to being able to dabble in all of these different styles and actually pull it off with any conviction like Queen did/does. Folks in the U.S. in my opinion are too easily brainwashed with the current trend in music. And to me, the current music out there is just noise/static...it's far from being music to my ears. I'll always be one of the (handful of) diehard Queen fans here in the U.S. I obviously have been hearing the same messages that every other loyal Queen fan around the world has been hearing for decades. I'll always appreciate Queen, even if my compadres think otherwise. |

I think Queen IS more popular than The Beatles and Led Zeppelin at the moment (In The Netherlands at least). I listen to the radio every day (just a normal 'popular music-station', not a rock-station or something) at my work and every day I hear Queen at least one or two times, and hardly ever I hear The Beatles or Led Zeppelin... never actually. zaiga 17.08.2005 11:05 |
True, in the Netherlands Queen is one of the most popular bands, and one that still gets frequent airplay. I believe I hear more Queen songs on the radio than songs by the Rolling Stones, Beatles and U2, although recently U2 was voted best band ever before Beatles(#2) and Queen(#3). |
FreddiesAngel 17.08.2005 11:39 |
Sometimes I think that Queen became bigger again in Germany in the last time. Dunno why, maybe because of the tour. On almost every radio station you can hear that Queen is played more often and even the prices for queen albums go up or there are special price supplies for Queen stuff. When I want to buy some Queen stuff I don't have look for it in the darkest corner anymore. That's such a great development. I really think Germany's enthusiasm for Queen comes back (although it was never really absent). |

Italy (or I shoul say the majority of potential queen hearers) suffered from realizing too much late what queen were.....but not too late too enjoy paul rogers now.... |

well, usa is not the onlyplace besides europe, for instance, here in Perú last week a tribute concert was held and the whole teathre was crowded, needless to say that there were many people stood up........Queen always have been influence in many artists, te thing is thnot all those artist say that....anyway Queen will always be a point of comparison ...always....Queen Rocks |
3137prof 17.08.2005 12:46 |
The simple answer is that Queen are just not trendy and cool enough for people to admit liking. I doubt it will ever change either. At work the other staff don't admit to liking Queen but the first band to get people humming along to when a song is played on the radio is Queen. |
luis663 17.08.2005 12:51 |
Well, I usually don't post here, but,Queen is not so popular in The US because Americans prefer a Big Mac to a Filet Mignon, as someone said sometime ago. Radio stations are formatted in such a way that listeners grow framed in a certain kind of format. Queen music is fine, too elaborated, and too diverse for the american taste, this is just my opinion and entitled to it. Luis |
Ms. Bea Haven 17.08.2005 13:21 |
Maybe Queen's music is just too - intelligent - for the average American to understand. Face it - we're a nation whose top TV programs are Survivor, American Idol, and whatever crappy reality shows are on for chrissakes...there's no imagination in it. It's really no wonder why I don't watch too much TV. (Sorry in advance if this sends this thread astray.) |

The only place they are not huge is America. And in England Queen are bigger than everyone (except the Beatles). |

It's really no wonder why I don't watch too much TV. (Sorry in advance if this sends this thread astray.)" Miss Bea Haven, your two posts on this topic are right on the money. Americans in general have lousy taste in music. They are too shallow to see the depth and layers in Queen's harmonics, structure, progressions and rhythms. I mean, what other groups have major rock and roll hits written in 6/8 time (e.g., We Are the Champions and Somebody to Love)? On top of all that, Americans were never able to deal with Queen's early flamboyance, so they missed the greatness and majesty of the music. Part of the problem with American tastes in music has to be laid at the feet of the American educational system. Very few elementary, secondary, and high schools have quality music and arts programs. Too much emphasis on math, science, and English. As a result, American students aren't taught to appreciate creativity, and creativity is rarely encouraged. Given this scenario, it shouldn't be any surprise at all that the best rock and roll music of our time (Queen, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, U2, etc.) came out of Great Britain, where creativity and art schools are much more in abundance. |

Miss Bea Haven, the TV in the UK is flooded with a lot of the same rubbish as the US then as we have to put up with Pop Idol, Big Brother and whatever other crappy 'I want to be famous' reality TV show they have on. So I wouldn't say this makes the US any less intellectual than the UK. |

I concur with the idea that Queen's music may be a bit too overwhelming for today's music scene. The sheer variety in their catalogue can stun many of their fairweather fans. For example, at the summer camp where I work, I've ripped copies of my Queen discography to MP3 to play to the kids. I pick a few tunes, ask them how many of them they liked, and watch as their faces drop after I tell them it was all one band. |

I think they should be more appreciated in the world today. They are way better than The Beatles and Led Zepplin sucks. Listen to him on Innuendo at the Freddie tribute concert, its awful. Queen are the best, period. |

Queen is like soccer: Huge everywhere except the U.S. where they were on top for one year. I cannot understand why they are not worshipped all over and considered the unquestioned greatest band ever. Queen's biggest mistake(a bad one) is the near constant mistakes they made in choosing a single. Their hits are wonderful, but everytime I talk to someone who likes Queen because of the two greatest hits albums they have, I boast that I can burn 2 cds of Queen that will not contain any of those tracks but still be better. I would use tracks that should have been singles like: Liar/Doing Alright/My Fairy King/The Night Comes Down White Queen/Someday One Day/Fairy Feller/March of the Black Queen Flick of the wrist/Lilly of the valley/Lap Revisited/Leroy Brown Prophet Song/Death on 2 legs Millonaire Waltz/Long Away/You Took My Breath Away All Dead All Dead/Spread Your Wings/My Melancholy Jealousy/Dreamer's Ball/Dead on Time Dragon Attack Las Palabras De Amore(G3, I know)/Life is Real/Action this day Keep Passing The Open Windows Was It all Worth It My Bijou/Don't Try So Hard Mother Love/Made In Heaven I think you could use these to make two stronger albums of Queen. How Bo Rhap is so huge and yet March of the Black Queen and Millionare Waltz aren't, I will never know. |

I agree... Freddie has the best voice out of anyone ever Brian May is just as good as Jimmy Page John Deacon could out play John Paul Jones and Paul McCartney Roger Taylor is one of the best drummers...like John Bonham....and the problem Queen wasn't as popular is because American's are bulletheaded. Once people figured out Freddie was gay, that's all they cared about, and they started condeming their music. My god, the only songs they play on radio here are WWRY, We are the champions, Bohemian Rhapsody, Bicycle Races, and You're My Best Friend....HELLO PEOPLE! Queen has more songs than that, and they're either as good or better! I hope to be a DJ and spread Queen's music farther.... what's with only playing singles and hits? If they would play it, it would probably be a hit. It makes me so angry, because Queen is very respected in England, and here in America, our taste for music.... well, lacks true music |
gem27 22.08.2005 13:59 |
I think Queen are very popular but not as respected as they should be. Artists like Bowie Clapton Led Zep The Who Bob Marley etc seem to me to get more respect than Queen. I think really Queen are a band u either love or hate, u either get or u dont but to me they are the best and most talented band |
