What's going on this week with so many beloved entertainers, celebrities, etc. passing away? Sad week.
1st Peter Jennings (BTW I watched Mondays' and Wednesday's tributes on ABC, very sad), then
Barbara Bel Geddes who played Miss Ellie on ''Dallas'',
Musician Ibrahim Ferrar,
now actor Matthew McGrory, who was only 32. link

Actually no...I hear on the news every day of every day people around the world, men, women, and children, who die of disease, fire, tragedy, crime, war, plague, famine, etc.
The news is just as full with millions of non celebrities who meet their tragic end too and yes that is sad and tragic and the news and us who go on grieve for them as well.

That's not what I meant. The news can't cover all deaths all over the world, so they just pick what will arouse the biggest amount of interest. In this case - celebrities. It's like when there are stories about Africa in the news, they usually show a mother breastfeeding an extremely thin child, and not a barely able to walk old man. You can't show everything.

I do agree that they cannot show everything, but geez, just the LOCAL Maryland news I watch, like in the last week, I saw on the LOCAL news the ongoing trial of 2 idiots who murdered their own 3 nephews and niece, several people killed in automobile/traffic deaths including a child last night in a hit and run, another child killed by her sex offender stepfather, a police officer nearly killed by another hit and run driver, 2 poeple who died in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning from an old furnace, the list goes on...it's just heartbreaking.
I didn't mean "look at how celebrity obsessed the media is" (as evidenced by the fact that I didn't SAY "look at how celebrity obsessed the media is").
I meant "why is Arlene obsessed with celebrities when there are major injustices being perpetarted around the world? Shouldn't she perhaps spend less time at HelloMagazine.com and more time at AmnestyInternational.com, and redirect her energies accordingly?"
I apologise for not saying that more overtly, but I do have this fascination with the subtleties of the English language, and the only way I can justify lowering myself to some of the intellectual amoebas around here is by at least challenging my own linguistic capabilities.
There, that should sort the wheat from the chaff....
Apparently some people do NOT read my many, MANY posts about my ongoing involvment and help with and my information to the people on QZ about how they to can help and what they can also do with the ongoing ''Make Poverty History'' and ''One'' campaigns, as well as my volunteer work with ''The American Cancer Society'' and ''The Animal Welfare League Of Maryland''.
Read this thread...one of many...that are NOT ''celebrity'' obsessed, though some people on QZ are obsessed with bitching for just bitching about something they know nothing about. link
FYI...SOME people may want to read my blogs..which address world poverty and hunger and the AIDS pandemic, the G8, Live 8, ''Make Poverty History'', ''One'', terrorism, the LOndon terrorist bombings, etc. etc. That's WHY they are below my signature.....

That's cause you're from NZ... I'm from Israel, and I heard about Peter Jennings only when he got cancer. I never heard of any of the others as well. I guess you can't know everyone everywhere.
