it arrived in the mail from ebay this morning (all i have to get now is innuendo and flash gordon)
truly, i loved hot space, but after listening to this album, i realized that i was horribly mistaken to think that hot space was great
this album is 40x as good as hot space, but hot space is still definitely worth a listen
my favorites:
radio ga ga
tear it up
man on the prowl
keep passing the open windows
hammer to fall
i like the original hammer to fall way better than the single

Hi sweden_man!
I think it is great you are collecting all the Queen albums.
You still have 'Innuendo' and 'Flash Gordon' to get? You have to get 'Innuendo'!!!
For me, it is up there with maybe their best album. It is between 'Innuendo' and 'Queen II' for me but my mind changes everyday.
It would be interesting to know after listening to all their albums, which one will be your favourite. Like I said, for me, it is between 'Innuendo' and 'Queen II' but there are so many knocking on the door, 'Sheer Heart Attack', 'A Night At The Opera', 'A Day At The Races' etc...
The 'Queen II' album is perfect and the more I think about it, it is probably my number 1 choice but 'Innuendo' is so emotional and powerful. There is a lot of meaning behind the songs and it has a certain number called 'The Show Must Go On', on the album This just happens to be my favourite song of all time. Anyway, back to the original point, 'The Works'. 'Hot Space' was a change of direction for Queen. The album itself was far from their best but certainly not the disaster a lot of people portray it to be. When I first heard 'Hot Space', I was pleasantly surprised and I thought, 'Well done for trying something new and experimenting'. Now when 'The Works' came along, it is as if they had something to prove. 'The Works' still kept it's synthesiser sound, such as 'Radio Ga Ga,' 'Machines (Or Back To Humans) etc... But then rocked it up with songs like 'Hammer To Fall' and 'Tear It Up'. Also included were powerful numbers like 'It's A Hard Life'.
I personally thought the works was an excellent album. I mean, an album which includes 'Radio Ga Ga', I Want To Break Free', 'Hammer To Fall', 'It's A Hard Life' and then songs such as 'Tear It Up' and 'Keep Passing The Open Windows', is not a bad album.
This album also produced some of their best videos and also included the song which started it all for me, what actually got me into Queen, when I saw "I Want To Break Free" on the TV at the age of 4 in 1984. So the album that includes this song means a lot to me.
The thing is, Queen have got so many excellent albums, so it is hard to say what is your favourite and what is their best. I prefer 70's Queen but for an overall album, I personally think 'The Works' is an excellent album to have in any collection!!!
I'm afraid that as an album, I really don't like The Works. Don't get me wrong, there are a few great tracks on there (Hammer to Fall, Man on the Prowl, It's a Hard Life, Keep passing the Open Windows, Is this the world we created & Tear it up) but Radio Gaga and Machines really ruin the album for me. I find them both boring. I'm not sure why this is. I hve to say that Radio Gaga was the lowpoint of the Hyde Park gig for me - I wasn't there to see Uncle Chunky sing Karaoke!
Hot Space on the other hand is a fantastic album - I was talking to McM before the Hyde Park gig, and he pointed out something I'd never really thought about, but which is completely true. Hot Space is probably - as far as quality of production and general musicianship goes - one of the best albums Queen ever recorded. Every vocal is crisp as a cold december morning, there isn't a surplus note played anywhere, and when it comes down to it, under pressure is possibly the worst track on there, and Under Pressure is a fantastic song!
But back to the original point - I can listen to the songs off the works that I like over and over again, but thanks to the two offending tracks, I can't stand it as an album.
I still went out and bought a new copy though. Bastards.
