Freddie Mercury was most likely the latter of the two.
Although such roles in homosexual relationships are not always rigidly defined, Freddie's personality (primarily off stage) seemed to conform more to an effeminate role. His style of dress, especially in the early days and the intentional use of a feminine timbre in singing support this.
I can be noted that Freddie made several changes as the 80's approached. He cut his hair, masculinized his clothing choices, and grew a moustache. This corresponds chronologically to Freddie's break up with Mary Austin and the beginning of his homosexual experimentation. It is possible that these changes in appearance were done as a compensation for the lifestyle he did not wish anyone to know about.
Regardless of the man he became onstage, he still remained the same offstage, the vulnerable, reticent Freddie Mercury few truly knew. In conclusion, Freddie was likely to favor the submissive role in his relationships.
I've not said this to offend anyone, it is merely an observation.
Here we go again. I know you said you meant this as an observation, but as I have said before MANY times on QZ, why do people constantly bring up, harp on, try to psychoanalyze...
...and think they know Freddie's most intimate personal psychology, sexual ''roles'', whatever...
....even if YOU had personally been with or known Freddie.
I am straight. I have had MANY Gay and Bi friends throughout my entire life, and let me tell you, appearance, someone's personality (outgoing/shy, seemingly straight or flamey), how they interact with people in public relationships...
...has NOTHING to do with what YOU might perceive as to what role they take when having sex.
As is the SAME case...with straight people I might add.
Also...in many cases for an individual, each relationship the individual has can take on a completely different context.
......Only Freddie knew these things and how he interacted in intimate situations, and each time, how it might differ or be the same with a different partner........
Geez. Everybody thinks they are Freud, when even Freud couldn't tell what goes on in a person's private life..was Freud THERE!

Zoroaster, better watch out. You drive us Qzoners too nuts we all might go...
POSTAL on you! (figure it out!) :-)
and if that doesn't do the job, I know I will get Medevial on your ass.

Ovaltine commercials scare me...in the one they play constantly here, everyone's scarily peppy and cheerful. I'm not big on pep!

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. I don't know much about Freddie's sex life, so I can't really defend him in this. Gender roles (masculine, femminine and androgynous) don't mean shit in how a person has sex. Your logic and reasoning behind this topic are so stupid and typical. Everything you've typed has been so wrong on so many levels. Homosexuality is NOT a lifestyle - it is sexual orientation. Freddie's lifestyle was purchasing expensive and grand art and furniture and partying it up with his friends. See the difference? So before you come on here assuming you know what you're talking about and instead making an ass of yourself, do some heavy research using legit sources.

Alright. I apologize for this post. I concede that I don't know what I'm talking about (or talking shit on purpose to annoy people). I wanted to stir up trouble because I was bored and have no life. I apologize for my intrusion on Mr. Mercury's life and privacy and for bringing up this stupid topic again. Please forgive me.
