can be found at: link Fucking hell, they have lost all their taste. Is that really the best shot they could pick? From what i can tell, it is just a load of people standing around. not too many of them seem to be going nuts or anything. |
Fenderek 05.08.2005 10:31 |
That's what the Sheffield audience was like actually... :S But the cover (like the title) is awful. Single looks awesoem this is really bad. |
Benn 05.08.2005 10:37 |
Hah! Just about to raise a thread on this........ I've never seen anything so unimaginative in my whole life. Let's hope that the mastering and the footage on the DVD is of a higher quality than this - I'm not holding out too much hope though. Surely a full stage set-up shot from the back of the hall at Sheffield would have been a better design. Apparently we're also getting the studio shot picture in there too (what joy). The title is shit too. Surely "Live at Sheffield Arena" would have been more descriptive. What are Queen champions of? Where have they returned too (Queen didn't play the Sheffield Arena)? |
Richard Orchard 05.08.2005 10:45 |
in the tour gallery, next to the live album cover, they have a great shot. the crowd looks alive and enthusiastic. the finesse seems a little low these days... |
The Mir@cle 05.08.2005 10:51 |
Niek (Friedchicken) made an alternative and better cover within two minutes ;-) link |
Serry... 05.08.2005 10:54 |
Is it Richard Gray's work? |
Team Zissou 05.08.2005 11:45 |
i think i read somewhere it is Brian's. Based on a photo sent in by a fan? |

No, no- that's the single... |

The new CD cover doesn't even look like Photoshop quality - it looks like a cover that would take 5 minutes to cut and paste then throw together on Microsoft Paintbrush. And just to be really fucking critical, what a terrible font for "RETURN OF THE CHAMPIONS" - the cover is completely removed from the more refined, regal image and imagery of Queen. The "Return of the Champions" cover looks like something KISS would put out. Jesus, how I want to join the Sharon G./Bryan's Permed Poodle bandwagon... But I digress. I suppose I can deal with one shity ass album cover. |
doremi 05.08.2005 12:55 |
Looks like they mixed up their cover promo for Kraft's latest Cheesewhiz product with their new album promo! |

Erin wrote: You think the one they are using is bad..look at the REJECTED cover in my profile..LOL! LMAO! Shoosh...don't give QPL any ideas. They might chnge their minds and go back to this cover! Aw hell...it's actually growing on me. Has a slightly eclectic, abstract perspective to it Erin. I think they should go back and use the REJECTED cover! |
Erin 05.08.2005 13:44 |
At least, the crowd is into it on the reject, eh? ;-) |
rockit22 05.08.2005 14:04 |
I think it looks ok. Nice shot. Better fonts than the "Queen on fire album". |
3137prof 05.08.2005 15:37 |
I agree that Niek's is much better and follows what they've had for the tour programme. Maybes we could all design our own CD covers and send them to Brian. |
Banquo 05.08.2005 15:39 |
That is really shit. |
rockit22 05.08.2005 15:44 |
The cover is actually great, so don't complain. |
Tim June 05.08.2005 16:02 |
I don't like this "live" cover. It looks not like a Queen cover, it looks cheap (specially with the poor "title" grafic) and in no way professional. Even the title "return of the champions" is pathetic crap. I wonder why the NOTW album was not named WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS... |
doremi 05.08.2005 16:25 |
Well one thing's for sure. Freddie's artwork is SORELY missed :( |
Penetration_Guru 05.08.2005 17:24 |
You really are clueless aren't you? The last Album design Fred was mainly responsible for was the stunningingly original and imaginative Hot Space. Damn, used sarcasm, she'll never get the meaning of it. |
rockit22 05.08.2005 17:53 |
I like the cover the more I look at it.. |
rockit22 05.08.2005 18:15 |
Maybe they want to thank their loyal fans with it.. by using a shot of the fans istead of themselves! That is nicely done actually. So don't complain. |
Bohardy 05.08.2005 18:43 |
Colour-scheme-wise, and general layout and design-wise, I really don't think it's too bad. To me that fact the crowd aren't going mental doesn't really matter as the shot looks quite stylish on its own. But the steaming turd in the the drainpipe that makes the cover as a whole utterly irredeemable is the fucking Return Of The Champions font (as well as the embarassingly naff, undescriptive and predictable title). |
Elessar 05.08.2005 20:36 |

Scary. If they didnt put Queen and Paul Rodgers there you would think Osama and Saddam produced their own album. |
luthorn 05.08.2005 23:40 |
who cares I'm not going to buy it anyway. Release something with Freddie in it instead: Hammersmith, Houston or the Works tour DVD. I'll pay for that. |

smells like The Firm's first album cover, that downward slash from top right yeah and where is Richard Gray at anyway? |
djaef 06.08.2005 01:23 |
I'm going to risk ridicule here - I like it. I think it's a really cool photo. I like the angle, and the two planes that the audience is on. True enough, the title is a bit dodgy, but it's really no surprise is it. I like Niek's version, except for the actual band. I love the logo and the lights in other words, but the band looks like it's standing around waiting for a cup of tea - hardly the look you want on a live album. |
rockit22 06.08.2005 04:32 |
I agree with you there, the cover is GREAT! |
Freddie F 06.08.2005 05:13 |
This artwork really SUCKS. I thought it was a joke, but it isn't. If Richard Gray did it, well... His work on Brian's "Another World" or the "Queen Rocks" CD and video wasn't great too, so I'm not surprised. For the single, the promo release looks much better than the "official". |
Elessar 06.08.2005 07:08 |
Apparently it was inspired by Close Encounters Of The Third Kind. link |
David Jones 06.08.2005 07:41 |
Spot on Elessar with the WWRY offer. Hmmm, still not liking it. Should have fitted with the purple colours of the tour really. If they are gonna keep this though, they need to get rid of that awful "Return Of The Champions" text. Thats the cruncher. |
sir vinou 06.08.2005 08:12 |
what's the most important? album cover? or the music ? Brian, Roger, Paul and co are musicians, are'nt they? they do sell music not beautiful pics ... |

I think that Queen should let bootlegers do the art work for future releases. Really, i mean, i remember the time when i bought bootlegs just for the cover. Even though i knew that the sound would be shit, i allways had hope that with a cover like that maybe the sound was ok too. I was allways wrong, but at least i wold get a new picture from Queen :)) That was something i allways admired in bootlegers, their capacity to deliver a brilliant album cover!! take care |
Elessar 06.08.2005 12:21 |
Apparently that cover has been signed off and confirmed. So there's no chance of it being changed. Maybe they could improve it with a well positioned and well-designed (unlike the following example) sticker? link |

Niek didn't make that cover, I did. Why do you think Niek made it ?! I was the one who posted it at the Dutch Queenforum.nl |
goinback 07.08.2005 22:47 |
When I went to the site, I got the pop-up window asking for fan photos with a nice photo of Brian on the extended stage and lots of fans around him, and Paul on the main stage. I thought *that* was what they were using the cover, which isn't bad! Then I closed the window and saw the actual cover, lol |
butambul 08.08.2005 03:10 |
The cover got this cheap 80's vibe to it. Eventhough i'll be buying the album..the cover just turns me off. Yeah pop up pic was much better. |
Voice of Reason 2018 08.08.2005 08:19 |
Guys, Some of your replies made me laugh out loud! Well done. Yes, it's a dreadful sleeve. It wouldn't surprise me if the picture wasn't even taken from a Queen gig! Maybe 'next time' instead of asking for fans photos to make a montage they could ask the fans to design the cover?!! |
Ayreon 08.08.2005 09:08 |
Yeah they really must be joking.... This really i the worst Queen cover ever.. The one in this thread is better, and made by a fan... Imageine what you could do when you get the assignment to make a Queen + live cover... And then they do this... Well maybe i'm a bit spoiled by covers like this.. link |
Ayreon 08.08.2005 09:09 |

Boy Thomas Raker 14.08.2005 09:50 |
I love Queen. Brian May is my hero. But someone has to tell him that rubbish isn't the same as controversial. I don't know what world he thinks this will make waves in (as a Queen reference, the album for II is iconic and discussed to this day; I don't think people will be discussing this cover ever again after the release date) but it's simply a bad shot and cover. End of story. |
shanemcd 14.08.2005 11:13 |
I've seen the proposed cover - it looks so amateur. The user submissions are excellent (Neiks I belive)... hopefully they will change their minds. |
