This happens to be my very favourite song from their truly exceptional catalogue of amazing songs. I was just very interested to see what all you guys and gals thought of this little number. I can remember when I first heard the song. It was in the beginning of October, 1991 and I was in the kitchen playing with my wrestling figures (ah, so cute!). I was 11 years old and the radio was on. This song came on and grabbed my attention immediately. I could instantly tell it was Queen, even at such a young age, even though I had never heard the song before. The song of course turned out to be 'The Show Must Go On'. I cannot remember what came out first, whether it was the album, 'Innuendo', or the single 'The Show Must Go On' but I was only 11 and did not have enough pocket money for the album at the time (but did get it off Santa that Christmas luckily). I did however go out and buy 'The Show Must Go On'. I sat in my bedroom and blasted it from the speakers. Even to this day, the song still sends a shiver up my spine. I know Brian May wrote it but it is as if he got inside Freddie Mercury's head and wrote what Freddie was trying to say. The way Freddie tackles and makes that song his own is incredible! From start to finish the song is a masterpiece! The lyrics are so fitting and emotional. The music is so haunting and powerful. As for Freddie's voice/vocals, well, I am hard pushed to see if there are any other Queen songs that have harder notes to hit, especially the way Freddie was at the time with his health. Especially when he sings, 'I can fly my friend' and 'I'll face it with a grin, I'm never giving in, on with the show'. My mind always runs away when I listen to the song and imagine what Freddie would have been like visually singing this song. I kind of imagine certain things, like Freddie falling to his knees when singing, 'I'll face it with a grin, I'm never giving in, on with the show'. And then hoisting himself up with his mike stand, with all the power and mite he had left, singing, 'I've topped the bill, I'll overkill, I have to find the will to carry on...'. This is one song I never tire of listening to. The lyrics, the music, the vocals and what it means to me, just makes it in my opinion the best song of all time. Whenever I am down, or need that extra push, I listen to 'The Show Must Go On' For example, I was listening to Queen on my mp3 player in the gym yesterday, on the random setting. I was struggling with the weight I was trying to lift and 'The Show Must Go On' came on and I managed to have that little extra in me to lift the weight. I find the song so inspiring. Without trying to end on a solemn note, I want this song played at my funeral. The following link is a great write up of the song. I especially like what is said about the end part of the song, the repetition of 'Go on...'. By interpreting it in a way that Freddie wanted the band to go and on. So have that all you people who disagree with tour!!! Here is the link :- link So please, tell me what your opinions are of this little gem of a tune! Have a good one, people!!! :-) |

I'm surprised it never reached the top ten in the UK, because i know lots of people who recognise that as a classic song. It reached #2 in the US of A, am i correct? If it did then i'm very glad to see the song be so popular in a very difficult territory. |

Elton John's versions of Elton John songs are rubbish too - save for Tiny Dancer.... |
john bodega 05.08.2005 11:06 |
Elton John should've been shot for his *effort*. It's interesting, I think the line "I'll face it with a grin, I'm never giving in..." is actually Freddie's input. I recall Brian saying that they already had lines written for that part, but that Freddie put it in himself. Interesting how they never really talked about his illness (in public or private) but that things like that would creep into the music. An excellent song, and a joy to play on guitar. |
Lord Blackadder 05.08.2005 11:06 |
Elton's TSMGO was great I thought. Elton should sing rock. Real rock. I think he has a really good voice nowadays. TSMGO is second only to Bohemian Rhapsody IMO. |

NJQueenFan 05.08.2005 11:43 |
One of the best, all my fav Queen songs tend to be opera/prog rock like Bo Rhap, White and Black Queen, but TSMGO is just so emotionally powerful and well written. And I doubt Brian wrote it without at least some input from Freddie. The song sounds like exactly what he was thinking. I think they gave the whole group credit for the Innuendo songs for a reason. |
Localboy80 05.08.2005 13:18 |
It is great to see so many people replying to this with such admiration for a true work of art (the song, not my thread! Lol!) When I am sad, I play it and think of Freddie taking no shit and singing his heart out giving it is all. When I am happy, I play it as it just sums up a mood of complete rejoicing. When I am angry, I play it to bring all tension out. When I am down, I play it to lift my spirits. When I need a pick-me-up, I listen to this psyche me up! THE SHOW MUST GO ON... WHAT FREDDIE AND QUEEN WERE ALL ABOUT!!! |
Sharron .G 05.08.2005 14:46 |
Freddie & Brian wrote the first verse of lyrics together of TSMGO , Brian has said that 1,000 times. Others have said that the music is Brian's, would some keyboard input from Deacon.... the lyrics are mainly Brian;s, but has Freddie input peppered throughout. I agree. Severeal parts of the song are very Freddie-like. |
rockit22 05.08.2005 14:48 |
It is one of the best songs I guess. |

I totally agree! At the time i heard this song i wasn't a Queen fan or new anything about them. The funny thing was that by 1991 i was a big fan of Freddie Mercury and his song "Barcelona". And i remember his performance at the Ibiza show in 1988, i was 10 years old and thought that he was different from other tenors (At that time i thought he was a tenor) because he wasn't fat and he didn't sang with that tenor voice. And the thing that i thought was really strange was people reaction to him. They just freaked out!!-And so do i!! Due to that, i became a fan of that guy not realizing who he was. It was just in 1991, when in Portugal the only thing that was been aired on radios was "Everything i do, i do it for you" by Brian Adams that suddenly i heard "The show must go on" and thought imediatly: "I have to buy this record. And who the f**k is singuing that". It was only when he died that i realize that he was the same Freddie Mercury i allways loved to hear. And then i realize that this man has sanged my favourite songs ever!! The rest it's history!! Take care |

Localboy, that was an extremely well-written commentary. Congratulations. And I agree that the song is brilliantly-composed. Starting the song in that rather haunting key of B minor (same as in I Want It All and Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb, as in "Hello, Hello, Hello, Is there anybody in there") was masterful. Brian, Freddie and the boys were indeed creative geniuses who could get the most out of an anthemic composition. Their recorded performance of this song is incredible. Thanks for bringing this up as a topic on this board. |
chauncey 05.08.2005 16:56 |
First of all, Fantastic article! Thank you for that. On the technical side, I was trying to figure out if the author was insinuating that John played the synth bass as opposed to the bass guitar. Could someone clarify that for me?? |
queenlegends 05.08.2005 17:59 |
Yea this song has gotto be THEE song that captivates how great Freddies voice was, he reached his peak notes here and when I try to sing it on my karaoke player Iv gotto drop it down 6 keys. It starts in Bm and later goes into C#m which is unbelieably high for a male singer! |

Brilliant piece of music. Some of the bands finest vocal and guitar work. As soon as I hear the opening drum sound it sends a shiver down my spine. |
Carol! the Musical 05.08.2005 18:54 |
I love this song!!! It is full of mixed emotions and positive views on such a terrible thing (Freddie´s illness). Its theme of struggle and courage on dealing with something so difficult is really quite inspiring, and it can certainly help you when you have a similar problem. |
john bodega 05.08.2005 23:59 |
To be technical, his highest notes aren't to be found in this song. You'd have to listen to Hang On In There, Was it All Worth It and The Hitman (where in each song he hits a nice big E). However, I agree - he soared in this song. I think it's pretty much his most impressive performance in that era. (Matched emotionally only by These are the Days of our Lives). |
Suigi 06.08.2005 00:17 |
I concur with just about everything stated here. I can just imagine Freddie all alone in the spotlight, visibly weakened, but still singing as loud and proud as ever. The audience is just stunned...stunned into silence. After "on with the show," Freddie starts feeling faint, but still gets the strength to sing the last few lines, before collapsing after "Shooooowww!!!" ... That's just my interpretation. Great topic, greater tune. |
Freddie F 06.08.2005 05:09 |
This is a really great song, no discussion about it. Brings me to tears everytime I hear it. The songwriter thing is annoying: would Queen have credited an individual songwriter for each "Innuendo" tune, we would certainly have read (Brian May) in the booklet, but we know Freddie contributed to the lyrics and John co-wrote the main theme, so a collective signature is rather justified. Anyway, it's a pity this song wasn't a bigger hit in England: would Queen have issued it as a second or third single (as a first, it would have been too dangerous for them because of Freddie's state at the time, the rumours, and so on), it could IMHO have succeeded better than "Headlong". In France, after Freddie's death, it was a smash hit, it went to N.2. I think a real video would have been a plus for this song, instead of this rather clumsyly edited footage from DoRo. |
Wilki Amieva 06.08.2005 08:07 |
I also agree. A very emotional song - no doubt about it. Also, one of the most powerful moments of the present shows. |
Penis - Vagina 06.08.2005 09:09 |
Not much I can add that hasn't already been said, except to add my memory of first hearing it: It was a day or two after Freddie died. MTV (in the states) had a news story indicating something like "A special video has been prepared as a tribute" (in other words, had Freddie not died, they most likely wouldn't have played this already existing video). It was to debut the next day at a certain time. So I tuned in, VCR standing by, and caught the U.S. premiere on MTV during 'Totally Pauly' (God help me). So I recorded the video, then recorded the audio from that to cassette (my VCR was mono in those days) and played it over and over until I got the cassette single. I loved it instantly and it had some sort of power over me. It also helped me to accept the loss of Freddie, which was a complete shock to me. I had been away from Queen for quite awhile and was only just getting back into them after the TV special "The Days of Our Lives" had aired that year. My memory of that single was that it was specifically a release for TSMGO and had the artwork for that, and it was months before 'Wayne's World' resurrected Bo Rhap. Beyond that I'm a little fuzzy. I can't even say for sure what the b-side was (if it wasn't Bo Rhap, perhaps Bijou) and maybe it was re-released with Bo Rhap later. |
Localboy80 07.08.2005 08:57 |
I have been listening to it over and over the last 48 hours and I am still spellbound by it. If Freddie was fully fit, on form and his voice was as strong/good as it was at, say, Live Aid or Hammersmith 1979,, then how do you think he would have performed the song live? |
_Amie_ 07.08.2005 09:30 |
I love Elton Johns performance at Freddies Tribute Concert, I feel his voice fitted it perfectly, of course it will never beat the original :o) |

The song is the one with the most power and meaning for me as a queen fan it's a song lyrically we can all relate to"inside my heart is aching my make-up may be flaking but my smile still stays on".For me my favourite queen lyric is in this song and i intend to get it tattoed on my back for later this year( i tend to get tattooed for my birthday!! ) "my soul is painted like the wings of butterflies fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die, i can fly my friends"...This song is a masterpiece xx aisha xx |

There should've been a court order preventing Elton John from singing that song. It's a beautiful, soaring and powerful tune. He turns it into a hippo's mating cry that loses all subtelty and emotion in favour of a guttural sound that's just unpleasant. It's like knitting with a sausage, there's no point. I really really think a billionaire should fund a new video for this song though. They can do it, I dunno, with head replacement or something, they should make a video where Fred's in it. Because Doro compilation videos suck, I mean the only one I like is In My Defence (and that's because it has outtakes of stuff in it). Yeah. New TSMGO video. Court Order against Elton John ruining song again (Brian did a much better version once). Face it Alone. My list of things to get is getting smaller. |
Crazy LittleThing 07.08.2005 13:04 |
While I'm not much of fan of Elton John's later work, his "The Show Must Go On" from the Freddie Tribute concert is exceptionally good, and harkens back to the greatness that lurks within the EJ catalogue. The diamonds are in there, one just needs to sift through a lot to find them. Another performer who nailed this one is Paul Rodgers. "The Show Must Go On" wasn't performed at any of the Q+PR gigs I attended, but I downloaded the official version, recorded at the Basel show. As this song so strongly identifies with Freddie's steely resolve to face and stare down his own mortality, it was a particularly ballsy move to have Rodgers perform it during this initial outing. Had he failed, audiences would likely have rebelled and run the lot of them out of town on a rail. Rodgers handled it brilliantly. Of course, being backed by this band of excellent musicians didn't hurt. Roger's and Brian's performances are particularly moving. I wasn't necessarily in Rodgers' court from the get go on the whole +Paul Rodgers thing, and don't necessarily love everything he's performed with Queen, but his "The Show Must Go On" is an absolute winner. Rodgers' version may be the best I've heard, and is a respectful and fitting homage to the brilliant Freddie Mercury. |
Sebastian 07.08.2005 17:18 |
I really like the way Brian and Roger sing it. I always thought this song should have done in the same way as Let Me Live |

People who critise the way Elton sung it are a bit harsh in my opinion. I mean, you think he had any chance of being better or on level with the way Freddie sung it? No, beacuse it would be an impossible task. It was truly one of Freddie's greatest vocal recordings. |

It was good to pick Elton John to sing 'The Show Must Go On' at the Tribute Concert, however it kinda bothered me that he picked the song as part of the setlist on his 1992 tour to promote 'The One'. The Freddie Mercury Tribute should have been the only time Elton performed that song. Elton John is one of my favorite artists, but he shouldn't have taken that song almost as his own. Yet, nothing can be nearly as bad as 'The Show Must Go On' on 'Moulin Rouge'. The whole version was a complete pile of shit, and added to the list of classic pop/rock songs that were musically slaughtered in such a rubbish movie. |

If Fred hadn't had become seriously ill, Show Must Go On wouldn't have been composed in the first place. |
Localboy80 08.08.2005 14:14 |

If freddie wasnt ill at all, most of the songs on the miracle, innuendo and made in heavon album would have never been written, seriouse. Maybe if it was written anyway The Show Must Go On would most probs could have been fitted at the end of the show instead of we are the champions maybe. |

Something I am curious about. Obviously I view Queen as one group but I always split them up into two categories... 70's Queen and 80's (+) Queen. Now I personally prefer 70's Queen but being as my favorite song is 'The Show Must Go On' and my second favourite album, 'Innuendo' (my favourite being 'Queen II'), which are both 'later' Queen (hence 1991). Is this just ironic that my favourite song is not from my favourite era? From all the replys to this topic, it looks like 'The Show Must Go On' is a favourite song with a lot of people but does that mean it is from your favourite Queen era? |

Granted that Moulin Rouge isn't the graeatest film ever, but it was rather refreshing at the time. And Nikole Kidman can definately sing. Don't dismiss other takes on the song simply because they don't soud as the original version. Personaly I think it is much a greater tribute to make the song your own and create your own interpretation of it than to actualy imitate the original performance. Robert Plant said just that during his Freddie tribute interview. Nobody can do these songs like Freddie, and frankly they would be fouls to try it. |

Sorry. I guess I am the only one who doesn't care for the melody of TSMGO. I can really appreciate the excellent elements though: Freddie's singing, the guitar, the lyrics and the situation under which they wrote and recorded the song. I don't know why it doesn't "get" to me like it gets to everybody else. Love of My Life is what is emotional to me, and is the best song to get me choked up when I think of Freddie and his great talent and how much I love him. It's so Freddie. I mean, I can tell it was coming right from his heart (melody and lyrics). And I imagine him singing it to Mary. Also, I love Brian's guitar on it. So delicate. (I prefer the live versions - I didn't really care for the harp - I think the harp is too much and therefore takes away from the song). It was really the best tribute Brian could have given to Freddie - during the recent concerts. |

I agree about Love of my Life, it really reminds me of how much I love Freddie, I can imagine sitting down with him, talking, and then him sining that. It really is a good song for any Queen fan to feel a conection with Freddie through. TSMGO is one of their best songs, and because they all wrote it, it showed that all four were fighting Freddies disease with valour and courage. Infact, I'm going to go one better on that, it is probably one of the best songs ever, and the most artistic song to come out of Queen after the seventies. Allas dear Freddie left us that yeay. Why do the great always leave so soon? Ah well, Thank you for posting this, an excellent topic, well done in deed!!:) B.R |

I have just listended/watched a version of this by Celine Dion and two geezers. Now I am actually a fan of Celine Dion's vocals, as I believe she has one of the best voices of all time and was convinced that she could sing anything but after seeing a video of her doing this live with two other artists, I am in shock. Fair enough, it was live and it may have been an off night but it really sounded like she struggled and I have never witnessed her to struggle. Again, I realise it may have been an off performance but I will say that nobody will ever sing this truly majestic song like Freddie or even come close for that matter! |
Sebastian 23.12.2007 10:09 |
I think Celine's version was nice, and I think she's gonna make even more justice to it on her next tour. Btw, I love Michael Ball's cover - he's one of the few popular singers whom I rate above Freddie. |
Localboy80 23.12.2007 10:29 |
Hi there, Sebastian! First of all, I just want to say that you are more than entitled to your own opinion but are you being serious or are you joking? I only ask, because I cannot believe you think Michael Ball is a good singer, let alone perform a good version of 'The Show Must Go' and to rate him above Freddie... Well, I am speachless! As for Celine, maybe it is because I expect so much from her vocal talents and was just left a little exacerbated. I mean, I saw her live at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, in September while I was on my honeymoon and she was absolutely flawless, to the extent where I had goosebumps with some of the notes she was hitting and the power she was delivering them with. I am landed to know that she will be performing this song on her up and coming tour, as I will be going to see her at the MEN Arena in Manchester. Where did you obtain this information, mate? |

i put celine dion along with mariah carey wailing bints, just watched it on youtube not for me in any shape way or form, my 1st memory of the show must go on back in the summer of 91 when it started getting airplay was like a hand on a clock getting closer to midnight, we all knew it was just a matter of time |

Sorry, I hadn't seen your comment. Well, I think Michael Ball's got a marvellous projection, so much power and I love his cover versions. I do rate him above Freddie as a singer (although of course not as a musician). But my favourite male singer remains Steve Balsamo, a genius. Cheers! |

Some years ago I listened to Roger's version of TSMGO from his Happiness tour in 1994 and loved it. I like the way he pretty much nails the high notes near the end, still in his own style. Great! Brian's version I am not very fond of it. I remember in some gigs he didn't sing the high bits and the Fabba girls did it. Then I listened to a recording of Brian singing that part and I understood why. I enjoy Brian's voice in the studio A LOT, but he is not a very good live singer, having to worry about playing guitar as well. Anybody know a good TSMGO performance by Brian? |

The way you describe Freddie singing this song is exactly how I have always immagine it. His voice trully soars through the song. The interpretation is amazing. Singing a song is one thing but interpreting it is another. Very few singers interpret the songs like Freddie did. I listened to Brian singing it in Youtube. He can sing it but he lacks to interpretation. All the frases have the same length, as he sings the song I can chop onions in a cutting board and not miss a beat. Anyways, to make a song like that you need genious and they had it. |

There are a lot more users on here these days since I first posted this, so it would be great to have your feedback and listen to your thoughts, views and opinions on how you feel about this amazing song from the boys! |

One of Freddies best vocal performances. The song is driven by his high energetic singing. I even believe it was a one-take deal as Freddie didn't really have the strength to sing take after take of the very demanding lyrics. The amount of control and dicipline Freddie had during his last recordings is stunning. He finally grew up. (maybe too late) I really wish I had the multitrack of this gem. Would love to put the vocals on as loud as possible and let the goosebumps commence. I love the fact that Queen returned to writing clever studio songs like they did in the early days, instead of producing simple rockers to please an audience. Innuendo's a great album with a couple of very questionable songs on it, but nonetheless a VERY worthy closing of a chapter. |

Well, Innuendo sure is great Queen's record. The best from '80 imho. TSMGO is great song also, but I always preferred title Innuendo from this CD. More to it, Queen's best era for me lies in '70 and I love (amongst others) Freddie's slow and short tracks, namely Nevermore, Lily Of The Valley, Love Of My Life. And I will always prefer any of these songs above TSMGO. I know TSMGO is maybe more mature, probably better recorded, played and sung, but nevertheless... Maybe it has something to do with the fact TSMGO got a lot of airplay in radio here (and it is played still as TSMGO is one on 5-6 songs radio stations play over and over here)... Probably I'm a little fed with it... |

The 'Innuendo' album is from 1991, fella, so certainly not the best of the 80's. |

TSMGO is in my top 5 queen songs for sure Brilliant Brilliant song sang perfectly |

Truly Queen's last song from their last proper album. A perfect performance all round and a song that still resonates with me all these years later. If I had one criticism of it I would say I don't like the 80's synth pads much. Would have been better with real strings.. |

I say it's time for a proper Fan-Retake! Who can play the violin!? Or do I have to take it up? And does anybody have a stripped down version of the song? Or is the Karaoke version closest to a stripped version?! standalone vocals would be great! but hey, thats not gonna happen |
