I have all concerts of queen that have been officially released on DVD and I also have them on VHS. Can anyone tell me why the concerts look darker on the DVDs than on the VHS?
For example, on "Live at Wembley" at the start of hammer to fall, theres a shot of the stage from far away and you could barely see the audience clapping along but on VHS although its night you could see them clearly.
Another example is Milton Keynes. The concert started during the day and when the cameras point towards the audience you can barely see them but on the VHS you can see them really good.
Can anyone tell me why this is? Thanks
If you're watching the DVDs on a computer, they may look darker (depending on the media player) because the gamma on computer monitors is different than regular televisions.
If you're watching both a regular TV though, then I'm not sure. The video level on your VCR may be set too high (or too low on the DVD player). But sometimes I think the DVDs that have had various video "noise reduction" techniques applied to them suffer from strange picture problems that end up making the picture seem darker.
Oh yeah...the reference point for digital black levels on a scope is at 0, while analog black is higher at 7.5...I wonder if that is making the difference in what you're seeing....

I was at milton keynes - i think we've talked about the day/night aspect of this gig before.
here goes. they came on stage about 8;45 (i think) and although there is usually plenty of light aroung in June in England at that time, the shape of the venue (a bowl) meant that once the sun got so low it effectively went pitch black.
And i can confirm (from being there) that it was strange but true - but the gig did start with what appeared to be bright daylight and turned into almost total darkness after about two songs.
as for the vhs/dvd thing - it is possible if you're watching on your TV that you can change your dvd player setting.
