Because they had to persuade John it was the right thing to do. He didn't want it released because he looks a right prat when he trips over the wire on Under Pressure. Not to mention people throwing things at him. Poor Guy.
i read somewhere, that john didnt like the idea of Bohemian Rhapsody being so long and he thinks its a silly song...so he tryed to edit some out..but thankful they didnt only in the beggening when it first came out...

Obviously it was because of money... :P
Personally, I think it's because Brian wanted a dvd release to compete with the american WWRY dvd.
The cd/lp release was just a by-product that cost them virtually nothing to make.
I heard that they didn't want to release it before because they (Brian and Rog) thought it was a really crap show. But then, having looked back at it, they were, as Roger said "on fire!" So they fixed up some of Freddie's scratchy vocals and released it on DVD.
Brian had some bad guitar bits like on We Will Rock You(Fast) and Now I'm Here/Dragon Attack where those tracks he blew strings and switched to his old Red Special duplicate that he had from 1975 to July, 1982.
