link You can hear the tracks. Constantine's Bo Rap is as good or better than the original. Almost all the tracks are good. Rooney, Sum 41, Shinedown, Los Lobos - great CD! I just preordered it on Amazon. Great job Brian May! |
Suigi 16.07.2005 19:56 |
Um...what the bloody hell are YOU smoking?! Nothing could top the original track of ANYTHING. That's why they're cover versions - they're mimicking greatness. It's all glorified karaoke anyway. |
conFreddie 16.07.2005 19:57 |
I saw Freddie perform Bo Rap live 3 times and this version rocks! Its the best cover I've heard. Not smoking anything. Listen. Especially the chorus with the We Will Rock You cast. That's good. |
conFreddie 16.07.2005 20:01 |
Also listen to Shinedown - Tie your mother down and Rooney Death on Two Legs. They did a great job! |
Roy Queen 16.07.2005 20:09 |
Yeah! What Queen fan could manage to say, or wait, what lover of music can manage to say that a stupid girl from idol sings better than Freddie?! Sorry, but... you have no idea of what I'm thinking about you now... |
conFreddie 16.07.2005 20:10 |
Hey, I'm the biggest Queen fan that ever lived and this Cover CD is good. Brian May performs on many of these tracks. Nice that you insult him as well as me. |
Suigi 16.07.2005 20:11 |
OK, after listening to all the tracks, I can pick out my faves. Shinedown - Tie Your Mother Down Antigone Rising - Fat Bottomed Girls Los Lobos - Sleeping On The Sidewalk Ingram Hill - '39 Personal fave has gotta be Antigone Rising. There's something about skinny girls singing that they love fat-bottomed girls... |
conFreddie 16.07.2005 20:13 |
Shinedown - Tie Your Mother Down Antigone Rising - Fat Bottomed Girls Los Lobos - Sleeping On The Sidewalk Ingram Hill - '39 You got to be kidding about Ingram Hill and Antgone Rising - these are my least two favorites, but like Shinedown and Los Lobos and also the Sum-41 version of Killer Queen and Rooney Death on Two Legs is great! |
AlmostMonday 16.07.2005 20:14 |
I have been a fan of Queen for decades. Love the music, love the energy. Sadly, I never saw Freddie perform live, but so wish I had. That said, I am blown away by Constantine and the cast of We Will Rock You's version of Bohemian Rhapsody. It gave me goosebumps, and I was so glad I'd already preordered the CD of Killer Queen. Was Constantine channeling Freddie, or did was Freddie's angel perched on his shoulder? Whatever, the result is brilliant. We Will Rock You is stunning! I want to see this group perform live. ps: I'm smoking nothing. |
Roy Queen 16.07.2005 20:18 |
No, I never wrote anything insulting about the music, I just critizised you because you said the "idol-girl's" version of Bohemian Rhapsody was good or better than the original.. that is shameful!!! And very, very pitty! |
conFreddie 16.07.2005 20:19 |
Well did you listen to it? |
doremi 16.07.2005 20:23 |
I adore Joss Stone but she butchers ''Under Pressure''. Hate Shinedown's ''Tie Your Mother Down''. Breaking Benjamin's ''Who Wants To Live Forever'' sounds like Creed on acid, and absolves the song of all emotion and depth. However...surprised that I like Constatine's & WWRY casts' BoRhap..alot! Also Jason Mraz's ''Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy'' is quite nice. Sume-41's ''Killer Queen'' is quite nice and Antigone Rising's ''Fat Bottomed Girls kicks ass. Flaming Lips' BoRhap is too off the wall for me. Sounds like ''WeirdRhap''. Ingram Hill's ''39'' sucks and loses all of Brian's depth and warmth. Josh Kelly SLAUGHTERS CLTCL, he should be shot! |
Roy Queen 16.07.2005 20:24 |
No :) But anyway, how could you put an Idol-singer in front of Freddie Mercury? Idol must be one of the most tragic forms of entertaining ever. Sorry idol-lovers, but I really don't think that's the way music works.. I hope... I pray... |
conFreddie 16.07.2005 20:27 |
Don't like Josh Stone's Under Pressure either (but all her songs sound the same to me). I like the Los Lobos version of Sleepin on the Sidewalk and Jason Mraz's version of Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy. The first single released is Constantine's version of Bo Rap. My daughter likes the Flaming Lips version better but she is a BIG Flaming Lips fan! They are way over the top like Freddie was. This is a great cover CD and a real tribute to Freddie and Queen! |
Suigi 16.07.2005 20:36 |
Hey, where are all the people who slagged this CD when it was first introduced? |
conFreddie 16.07.2005 20:38 |
Brian May had a say in this entire CD and he did a great job! I've listened to all the tracks about four times today and it is a wonderful CD. Thank you Brian May for letting new artists shine on this CD! |
CatYamDoo 16.07.2005 21:28 |
I listened to Constantine Maroulis' version of Bohemian Rhapsody today and I thought it rocked. I am a Queen lover from way back and he did an awesome job on this track |
IdolFaninCan 16.07.2005 22:11 |
For the record, BoRhap is covered by Constantine Maroulis, a 30-year old man, not "some girl from Idol" as stated by one poster. |
IdolFaninCan 16.07.2005 22:14 |
First off, don't go by my name -- I was in a hurry to join American Idol Boards when I picked it, lol. I'm a Constantine fan, not an American Idol fan. Someone stated that American Idol is a pretty poor form of entertainment -- lots of folks would agree. However, this year, an amazing performer by the name of Constantine Maroulis was on American Idol and he was totally different. When he performed Bo Rhap during the competition, people flipped. He was too much for the show to handle because he wasn't the standard pop-idol image they look for so he got ditched. However, Brian May heard his performance and went looking for him to perform on Killer Queen. Enough said ... (I trust Brian's judgment). |
acrobat 16.07.2005 22:49 |
I have always been a big Queen fan, well more of a Freddie fan than anything! I am not sure, but I get the idea some queen fans were against a tribute CD?? I think that only praises Queen and their legend status to have such a CD come out! I am not one that is big on song covers, write your own songs! So to me if you are going to do one make it sound like they way the original artists intended and give it your sound if you are going to do it!! From what I heard a quite few artists have covered Queen well on this CD! I am floored by Constantine and WWRY on Bohemian Rhapsody, Shinedown on Tie Your Mother Down, Ingram Hill on "39", Sum-41 on Killer Queen, and Rooney's Death On Two Legs. To me that is a lot of songs to appreciate on one CD! It is a definite buy for me! |
conFreddie 16.07.2005 23:01 |
I've relistened to all the originals today. And Los Lobos is the best remake of the entire CD! Much better than the original. I am a huge Queen fan and couldn't even remember "Sleepin on the Sidewalk"; relistened today; and I like Los Lobos' version better than the original. I've listened to Constantine's and Freddie Mercury's version of Bo Rap today many times today and it is a close call. The chorus is definitely better with the We Will Rock You Cast. But Freddie is great! I still love him after all these years. The Killer Queen track is great on the covers! |
teleman 16.07.2005 23:16 |
I'll be buying this CD. Just so I can't be accused of only listening to Queen :) A couple of songs seemed off to my ears but they might grow on me with a few more listens. I thought Constantine Maroulis did a good job on BhoRap but I prefer the original. Maybe this will introduce some new people to the music of Queen. |
Sand64 17.07.2005 00:14 |
One here teleman! Well not really, I've always liked Queen. But I'm esp. interested in this CD because of Maroulis. I heard him on American Idol a while back and he covered Bohemian Rhapsody. He only did an abbreviated version of the song on the show, but it really was very good, way beyond the usual Idol stuff. I've never bought a tribute cd in life but I'll buy this one. I liked some of the others singers as well so I'd say May did a good job on the cd. |
Ray D O'Gaga 17.07.2005 00:27 |
This is actually a pet peeve of mine. A lot of Queen fans will dump on any cover of a Queen song performed by anybody. I'm not just talking about the Killer Queen tribute album, but also about Queen covers going back 10 years or more. If the cover sticks closely to the original, this particular ilk of Queen fan screams "How dare they try to rip off Queen! They're so unoriginal! Their version was just a rip off! They're trying to be better than Queen!", and if its a pretty significant interpretation of or departure from the original, its "They've ruined the song! It sounds completely different! Who do they think they are! How dare they change a Queen song!" So, damned if they do, damned if they don't, and closed minds at the center of a lot of it. Its an honor for a band to have their songs covered by other people, regardless of how good or bad one subjectively thinks the cover is, and the fact that someone does a cover of a band's song in no way means the covering performer is trying to replace or outdo or belittle the original. A cover just an interpretation. A cover version of a song does not erase the original version. In the overwhelming amount of cases, regardless of how good the cover is, it will always be in the shadow of the original version. So in a nutshell - Relax. Chill. Its only a bloody record. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Your mileage may vary. Live and let live. |
Suigi 17.07.2005 00:28 |
I dunno. I think it's a decent cover, but definitely NOT better than the original. TBH, it lacks that special something that would make it any better. |

conFreddie 17.07.2005 00:55 |
How do I get rid of that thread I shouldn't have posted? Anyway, Why don't you listen to all the tracks and then make up your mind. There are definitely about six tracks on this CD that are good. And thank you Brian May for supporting new talent! |
claudiox 17.07.2005 04:49 |

I'm very sorry if I have hurt some constantine-fans, I'm form Norway, and have never heard about him, so how could I know it was an 30 year old man? Anyway, that doesn't care! The persons that say Constantine sings the song (Bohemian Rhapsody) as good or BETTER than Freddie Mercury must be big fans of Idol, and haters of good music. |
Penetration_Guru 17.07.2005 10:59 |
This is a windup thread... - "I am a huge Queen fan and couldn't even remember "Sleepin on the Sidewalk"" - references to a chorus of Bo Rhap - claims that Brian appears on most of the tracks. - the inference that this is a guarantee of quality |

Well, I won't be buying this. Not really impressed by most of the cover versions. A good cover version should not make you cringe, I'm afriad most of these do. Eleven's version of Stone Cold Crazy sounds quite interesting. Different. The rest just aren't my taste, or sound like bad kareoke. Oh well. I thought Green Day were doing their cover on here too? |
sdferertg 17.07.2005 14:06 |
Oeh.. I like that version of CLTCL! Pretty different but good. And that slow version of Stone Cold Crazy sounds good to me as well. Maybe the version of SCC that's called a 'different slow version' played live by Queen in the early years could have sounded like this. I don't like Bicycle Race. It sounds like they had to hurry because they had only 2 minutes to record it. And I feel sorry to say it, but that version of BoRhap by Flaming Lips sounds like the JostiBand... Bobby_brown 17.07.2005 14:58 |
OK, just finished listen to it and this is what i think: They're all good, and did the best they could. My favorite is Under Pressure by Joss Stone. It's fantastic!!! I found Bicycle Race very curious too. The thing is, i like more when wemen sing Queen songs than men, because Freddie's voice had more of a women tone. I allways wondered how it would sound The Show must go on sunged by Mariah Carey. As for Constantine Bo Rap it's very good indeed, but doesn't match the original, although he has a voice very closed to Freddie's (for what i've heard). If he get the right persons around him he will have a career. Wish him all the best!! Take care |

I must say, Constantine's BoRhap was great, while the Flaming Lips' version was laughable. The best one on the CD was Ingram Hill. Jason Mraz (is that even pronouncable?) made GOFLB sound almost orgasmic. Joss Stone did a really weird, but really good cover of Under Pressure. Breaking Benjamin did well too. The worst two were Gavin DeGraw's WATC and Be your own pet's Bicycle Race (Did they even sing anything?) |

I'm not done listenin' to everything yet, but... the only crapper on the album so far is Josh Kelley's CLTCL... at least it was a good try. Jason Mraz made my bum fall out my pants in enjoyment. Everything else just sounds suprisingly awesome so far too. They all did a great job of keeping with the spirit of the songs. Though, I haven't listened to the Flaming Lips yet. That one may be a different story. Oh! And all this comes from a guy who generally hates any and all Queen covers! |

Jason Mraz does a great job with 'Loverboy', though his backing track sounds weak, as if made up of midi stuff. Joss Stone is great with Under Pressure, very nice arrangement. Josh Kelley's Crazy Little Thing is a fun reworking. Jon Brion's Play The Game is cool. Ingram Hill's sped-up '39 is kinda nice but lacks the sincerity of the original. The rest pretty much stinks. Will I buy it? No. |

Just bought the album. Overall, some really good covers. "We Are The Champions" nicely done in a bluesy, laid-back mode by Gavin DeGraw. Nice change. "Tie Your Mother Down" a straightforward retake by Shinedown. Average. "Bohemian Rhapsody" slickly true to the original by Constantine M. and the Vegas cast of WWRY. Great voice. "Stone Cold Crazy" has the feel of "Dragon Attack" in this version by Eleven w/ Joshua Homme. Average. "Good Old Fashioned Loverboy" by Jason Mraz is another true-to-the-original retake of the original. Nice but nothing spectacular. "Under Pressure" pleasantly interpreted by Joss Stone in an eerie Janis-Joplin-like R&B flow. "Who Wants to Live Forever" by Breaking Benjamin is delivered with a Rob Thomas modern feel. "Bicycle Race" by Be Your Own Pet is absolute shit and never should have made it to the final cut. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Josh Kelley is an interesting Cars-like power pop version. Quite infectious! "Sleeping on the Sidewalk" by Los Lobos is Santana-like in feel and delivery. Average at best. "Killer Queen" by Sum 41 is a great cover, despite a few screw-ups with the lyrics (MARY Antionette? BECAUSE she couldn't care less?) "Death on Two Legs" covered excellently by Rooney stays true to form. "Play the Game" by Jon Brion sounds like a piano bar singer at closing time. Uninspired. "Bohemian Rhapsody" by the Flaming Lips gets credit for trying to be interpretive (plus adding the Freddie sampling early on). Adding the acoustic guitar to the piano parts and the dreamy layering throughout the song gives it a new twist. Better than I thought it would be from the clip provided earlier. "'39" by Ingram Hill maintains the feel of the original, nicely done. "Fat Bottom(?) Girls" by all-girl group Antigone Rising kicks ass. Watch these gals. They're gonna be BIG. Enjoy y'all! |

Gavin DeGraw - We Are the Champions - I really didn't care for the arrangement on this. So much so that I actively disliked this version. Gavin sounded like...Gavin. Shinedown - Tie Your Mother Down - Absolutely loved this. Rockin! Fun! Really really like the interpretation and presentation. Very lively. Constantine and WWRY - Bohemian Rhapsody - Very true to the original, but with a bit of interpretation/personalization. Fantastic voice with lots of nuance/richness. Very, very good! Eleven w/ Josh Homme - Stone Cold Crazy - This is well done. Josh does a really wonderful job with the song. It almost feels sorta bluesy in the way he does some of his inflections and things, which was unexpected, but good. Jason Mraz - Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy - Was really surprised by this. I'm not a Mraz fan, but this was GOOD! Pretty, pretty voice. Joss Stone - Under Pressure - Hated everything about this song. The arrangement was poor, the singing atrocious. And I'm not a Joss hater. Breaking Benjamin - Who Wants to Live Forever - It sounds exactly like Breaking Benjamin. And it really really works. Love it! Be Your Own Pet - Bicycle Race - This just needs to go away. Yesterday. Josh Kelley - Crazy Little Thing Called Love - It's...OK. But it didn't choose me. Los Lobos - Sleepin' on the Sidewalk - I just didn't care for this. The vocal affectations/stylizations really just ruined it for me. I couldn't get past them enough to enjoy the song as a whole. Sum-41 - Killer Queen - OK, I was not expecting something this faithful to the original from Sum-41. At all. I am impressed for that very reason honestly. Well done! Rooney - Death on Two Legs - Not a song you hear very often. Was happy to see it's inclusion on the disc. Enjoyed the guitar work quite a bit. Nicely done. Jon Brion - Play the Game - It didn't do anything for me. Lacked the passion of the original and the singing was...adequate at best. Flaming Lips - Bohemian Rhapsody - All I can say is I almost wish these backup singers had been behind Constantine instead of the cast of WWRY and Constantine's version had been the only one on the album. The backups are FUN on this track (and 'richer' than WWRY, but I can understand why Constantine was expected to stay more 'traditional' in his interpretation by the album producers.) Ingram Hill - '39 - Another semi unusual track which I was pleased to see. It was good just for it's uniqueness. Antigone Rising - Fat Bottom Girls - Sweet track! Lot of fun! Great to hear chicks doing this. Hee! Loved it, just loved it. :-) By the way, there's a pretty cool 'making of' documentary up on Brian's site for this album. It centers mostly around Constantine and the Bohemian Rhapsody track, but you also get to see the studio and the producers and rest of the crew. There's also a clip of the forthcoming DVD showing concert footage in Sheffield. link |

now that i've heard the whole thing, must say the liner notes are so sweet and the Los Lobos stuff really gets more ahead of the rest of the songs...didn't really get the Live Forever cover or Mraz. Girlfriend Mary didn't like "Under Pressure," she says "it lacked tension between the vocals and music. There was no justice done for the song. It wasn't the quality you would expect for a song so well-known." The Be Your Own Pet at first sounds disinteresting, but it's grown on me. The Shinedown and Eleven f/JH tracks still my favorite tracks, and the "Crazy Little Thing" cover is just a bit too polished, almost an ELO tune. I almost mistook the DOTL cover for a karaoke version of The Darkness. "Play the Game" has a Beatles-esque lullaby feel, while the Flaming Lips went on a trip and prove that when Americans do opera, it's called Broadway. "Makes me think of the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show,'" says Mary. Ok. '39 does lack some kind of time dilation effect-- but the percussion choices are pretty bold. '39 is an interesting tune now that the band itself has travelled in time to play more shows! Hmm. Antigone Rising did an awesome job. Makes me think bony girls make the rockin' world go 'round too! |

OK, PhoenixRising wrote a review, so I can't resist writing one too. Gavin DeGraw's "We Are the Champions" doesn't do it for me. I don't like the arrangement. I find I often skip this track on the CD. But maybe that's because I'm not a big DeGraw fan anyway... Shinedown's "Tie Your Mother Down" is fun. A strong interpretation. Constantine's "Bohemian Rhapsody" with WWRY was excellent. It was very faithful to the original but it worked, because he has a fantastic voice, extremely expressive, and the drama to pull off this very difficult song. I hope this gets some radio play. Eleven with Josh Homme's "Stone Cold Crazy" has a quasi bluesy feel to it, which was unexpected, but good. I must say Josh does a great job with the song. Jason Mraz's "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" is fun to listen to. I'm no fan of Mraz but he did the song justice. Joss Stone's "Under Pressure" was ugly, the worst track on the CD. Her voice is fine but the band screwed this up for her. It's a shame. Breaking Benjamin's "Who Wants to Live Forever" really, really works. I love it. Be Your Own Pet's "Bicycle Race" is just plain irritating. I skip this song every time I listen to the CD. Josh Kelley's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" is not bad, but it's not good either. It's boring. I found Los Lobos' "Sleepin' on the Sidewalk" affected. I can't enjoy it at all. Maybe it will grow on me. For me Sum-41's "Killer Queen" was the biggest surprise of the CD. I expected to hate it but it is awesome. I didn't know Whibley had it in him. It's just terrific. I hope it gets played on the radio. Rooney's "Death on Two Legs" was well done, I guess. It's not a song I ever listened to much. Jon Brion's "Play the Game" didn't do anything for me. It lacks passion. The singing was passable. I tried to like the Flaming Lips' version of "Bohemian Rhapsody," I really did. All I can say is I almost wish Constantine's version had been the only one on the album. Well not really, because it's good to know "Bohemian Rhapsody" can lend itself to so much. But really... I don't like this version at all. I know they were trying to do something really original, but it didn't work. Ingram Hill's "'39" was excellent. He made the song his own. Antigone Rising's "Fat Bottom Girls" was great, I can't imagine anyone not liking it. Great to hear a woman singing this. |
