It was quite nice gig. I must say that first hour of the gig didn't really left any highlight on me... except Hammer To Fall which really did kick the ass. There were some mistakes, but nothing special.. Second hour however was great... even Kind Of Magic was superb (so far I didn't find that song to work well for me). Then Imagine came as surprise... and setlist after break was SUPERB (all big letters he he). WWRY could be probably heard miles away. Great response by audience... Oh yes, same was for Can't get enough... I was surprised by that a bit as I thought response would not be that loud. I loved video during WATC - great finale. The end came very quickly and things just started to heat... Bri's solo was not the best one this time... very nice video during Last Horizon... silent audience during IWTBF... at least that was my impression... Rog did loose one stick during his solo and during the IILWMC it did sound like he was lost for a moment. After that he left stage as I think Bri's 39 and LOML were to come next and you could see he was a bit... lost/tired at that moment. At least my impression. During Imagine there was something funny... Bri was at the end of the catwalk and Rog was joining in and people started to clap and scream... and screen on sides showed Paul showing with his hand in Rog direction and talking to Danny and it look like he was saying "you see, they always do that when this bustard comes in"... after Paul joined and he got the same treatment too :) Paul was in great shape... Bri.. well, you never know with him... when looking at his face it always looks like he is not happy even when sound seem to be ok... that's my impression for the first few songs... but I think he was happy at the end... I was next to mix in GC and there people were not that loud... actually, I could hear more people singing in GA than around where I was (for first hour). Razorlight were good... they probably have the future. Peter Key was superb. I was wondering what he will do, but his show was really special and I think there is no one in audience who didn't love him. There were many cameras around so I guess there will be allot of material for DVD or who knows. Oh yes, bloody ticketmaster did mistake with my ticket. I had 2 GC which I bought during QOL presale. Then after show being postponed I did refund one. But after 3 days they canceled my second ticket too!!! So, the guy told me that was a bad new and the good one was there was plenty of GC tickets on box office one could buy so I had to buy one. Another thing I just remembered was that gates (at least for GC) didn't open at 3 but 30 or 45 minutes later.. I don't know, but it did look like eternity. I was able to get inside with my F717. That camera is kind of bulky and I was wondering if I would be able to do it. Around 1PM I spoke with security guy and he told that all cameras that do not have exchangeable lenses are allowed (which means all prosumer point and shoot too). I wish someone one more clear on that earlier. All in all this was very nice gig. As usually it gets better toward the end and then end seems to be so quick. Thank you guys for this tour. Get some rest now and give us something new. |

Nice post H. Thanks. Sorry I didn't get to meet you. (Weren't you going to be at The Talbot?) I think we probably passed each other near the ambulance gate at Hyde Park on the Sunday after Live 8! The Paul Rodgers gesture regarding Roger's audience reception seems to be consistent with reports of the crowd going wild when Paul was onstage and Rog came out to do a solo on congas (someone on QZ reported it was bongos, but in the program they look like congas to me . . . ) Funny stuff. Am genuinely amazed that Ticketmaster messed up your tickets. NOT!!!! Am afraid to check with my bank to see if they handled my ticket refund properly. The last thing I need at the moment is a brain aneurysm, I need to be at the top of my game at work for the next few weeks! ;-) |

We were at the end of the walk way and managed to get a decent view. However, I have to say that the show was nowhere near as good as Brixton. For me, there was nothing dangerous about the whole event. The setlist was pretty much exactly the same as every other show on the tour so far (save for the addition of Imagine) and everything seemed, to me, to have been planned and formulaic. Razorlight were awful - they have a lead guitarist that mirrors exactly what the singer plays and pretty much renders himself completely redundant by having no presence. The drummer plays the same patterns for every song. The vocalist clearly thinks he's Mick Jagger, but doesn't have either his presence or his delivery. Oh to have Status Quo open the show. Peter Kay is a genius - genuinely funny and on the edge - humor around disabled people os always a touchy subject, but he manages to carry it off by understanding the source of his material. Queen were Queen on the day - they played a very professional show and had the ability to deliver to a massiave audience. However, they quickly need to come up with some kind of new concept in order to avoid going very stale. This set will go down a storm in Japan, but I'm not sure that the USA will be as forgiving as Europe. |
eggy 16.07.2005 04:30 |
Bollocks, Razorlight were amazing. Yes they didn't use the walkway but to say Johnny Borrell has no stage presence is just plain wrong. Their set was 50 minutes of great songs all from one album. As someone has already said, they have a great future. If I'm honest, however great Peter Kay was I was dissapointed because I'd seen him do all of that material before at the Royal Albert Hall in April and was hoping for something new. He was very funny though. As I said to people at the Talbot (hello by the way) I left before the encore because I wanted to get back to St Albans so I did have that on my mind but Queen left me a little flat. Maybe it was that fucking intro which pissed me off and I could never recover, but the first half of the show is just boring now (and I've only seen three gigs). Still I'm being too cynical because they were great, just dissapointing in certain aspects. |
mihkelt 16.07.2005 05:18 |
what was the attendance number? anyone? and did they pay their respects to the emercency workers ( or however they are called ) or was the gesture of giving away free tickets all? |

"However, they quickly need to come up with some kind of new concept in order to avoid going very stale. This set will go down a storm in Japan, but I'm not sure that the USA will be as forgiving as Europe." Ofcourse, that always was an issue, from 1973 to 1986. But in those days you didn't notice it because there wasn't internet where you could see the setlist, or where you could download the songs right after the show. The setlist on this tour has been changed more than every other tour from Queen |
Jjeroen 16.07.2005 06:56 |
Great post hrcvelin. I understand all your points, after seeing quite a couple of gigs (but unfortunately not Hyde Park ;-) The reason Razorlight did not use the catwalk is because they were not ALLOWED to. No support act may use it. The camera's? Yes, they were all around at all the open air shows. First of all of course because of the big screens next to the stage. But 'yes' the DVD will feature 'some' footage of these four shows on the bonus disc. (Btw. Sorry Eggy, I've seen Razorlight perform three times and I personally REALY don't understand what you Brits see in them. Personally I think they are utter crap. Not more then average songmaterial brought by a not more then average band. But that's just my humble, critical opinion) Oh and I also agree on the fact that the setlist gets too boring. I have to say that I was deeply disappointed to hear absolutely NOTHING new during the open air shows. Although they did play better then the first time around (especially in Cologne!) but after yet another month of rehearsals to come with the exact same setlist again, shows them realy a bit lazy. Just one new track would have made a difference and they could at least kept Pressure and Fire and Water inside. Did any of the band say anything around Imagine? |

there were 45,000 there, I asked the guards, they limited it to that. Thanks stateside, I must admit it looked a hell of a lot more than 45,000. Mrs Mercury I was at the front of GA behind the speakers, did you see teh fight that happened??, why people cant stay off the booze for one night of their lives is beyond me.. 'Imagine' Was the highlight for me purely because I never expected it and there was so much audience participation. Love of My life was emotional.. I didnt rate Razorlight at all, Did anyone else notice the atmosphere change so dramatically when Queen came on. One of my highlights was having 4 teenagers next to me so excited and pleased at seeing Queen & PR they rated it as one of those 'I was there' moments. Brilliant when you see 'Neutrals' absolutely blown away by the music. I saw Queen in Cardiff and Sheffield and personally I thought this topped them both, I cant wait for the tour dvd. |

Considering I am only 17 and therefore not old enough to have seen them with Freddie, I thought the gig was excellent. I was right at the front of the GC with four of my friends, all of whom love Queen and just wanted a chance to see them play live. Brian is an amazing guitarist and to see him play so close was breath-taking. Roger did extremely well too and the audience obviously loved him- lots of chants of "There's only one Roger Taylor" seemed to occur. Peter Kay was fantastic, but then again I am a huge fan of his. Razorlight were nothing special, but I have seen far worse support bands. The lead singer was imitating Mick Jagger? I was thinking more Bob Geldof, personally... again, he was nothing like him, he just seemed to be trying to impersonate him a bit. Hammer to Fall- fantastic. Slow version cutting straight to the fast. Brian's singing was, in my opinion, fantastic, as was Roger's. Paul Rodgers was very very good, and although I'm not a huge fan, I thought he coped extrememly well. Brian's version of "Love of my Life"- for Freddie- was beautiful. At one point me and one of my friends appeared on the big screens, a real close up, during "Love of My Life"- it was incredibly scary to turn and see my ugly mug on the screens! A few things that irked me slightly but did not ruin the day- the intro was way too long, and spoiled by Eminems "Lose Yourself" being played- am I just thick, or is that just the most random thing ever? There were four Germans near us who had obviously seen them about 10 times before and knew what was coming and would shout out the next songs to be sung, spoiling it for everyone around us. And the heat was a little too much for me, and the fact that we had to wait an hour longer for the gates to open than we should have done just frustrated me slightly, especially as we had already been waiting six hours (sad, I know, and I shouldn't complain as in my opinion they were fantastic.) The audience (especially around me) loved Radio Ga Ga, I want it all, I'm in Love With My Car, We Will Rock You, I Want to Break Free, and of course, Bohemian Rhapsody among many others. All in all- great day out, would definitely do it again. Lilian |

I have been to 3 gigs on this tour; Brixton, Wembley Pavilion and Hyde Park. This was the best concert of the three and reminded me how Queen used to play live. The reason for this was that Brixton being the first date of the tour was a hit and miss due to the fact that 1) Spike, Danny and Jamie seemed to be in another band they were so far away from Roger Brian and Paul. 2) Paul seemed to lack confidence in singing the Queen songs. 3) The crowd did not seem up for it as there was no pogoing, jumping around like crazy or generally going mad. The reason for this could have been the surprise of Queen going on the road again. Wembley Pavilion was a great show and reminded me of the Queen era, but being in the 3rd block was totally crap as you could not see the band they were so far away. Hyde Park – What a great experience. Peter Kaye was great as a compare, I had not seen him live so the script was new to me. Razorlight were a great support band, and got the crowd warmed up nicely. Peter Kaye coming on as his wheelchair persona was really funny. We were in the GC, standing to the right of the stage next to the end of the catwalk (if you are reading this - apologies to the French guy whose shoulders I was using to balance myself to TYMD, and apologies to the girl behind me whose bag I trod on during Bo Rap) and being that close when they came down to walk was amazing. I think Paul has grown into the songs now and can play the crowd, even during Queen songs. There were many highlights for me but the most vivid are:- Roger Taylor coming down the catwalk and announcing “business as usual” TYMD – but I have always liked this song anyway. ‘39 LOML – I think Brain was tremendously moved by the crowds singing and it took a few seconds for him to compose himself. Imagine – this song epitomised the feelings of the band and crowd. TWTDOOL – Still brilliant, especially with the video of the band in Japan. RGG – As normal the whole crowd clapping in unison. AKOM – I though the light show was brilliant on this song, with all 10 stanchions changing colours and moving around the stage. WATC – The video monitor showing all the services that helped after the bombing. I could go on and on ...... I can only hope they decide to do more outside dates, even if it is next year. The only trouble I can see with this is what would they play as I would prefer a different song list. This is not because I think the songs played could necessarily be bettered (in fact I think the selection and order was inspired) but there has to be different material to create a difference. |
hcrvelin 17.07.2005 18:34 |
RohemianBapsody wrote: AKOM – I though the light show was brilliant on this song, with all 10 stanchions changing colours and moving around the stage.Oh yes.. that rig did rock... I think I noticed that movement first during Hammer To Fall when hard version kicks in... I could see people around me being thrilled by it (myself included)... the it moved made stage components looking totally live... and then during AKOM was great (and toward the end too as darkness was falling). Perhaps small thing to do, but very powerful anyway. |

Are you all saying that this comedian made fun of people in wheel chairs? What the hell? Otherwise the reasoning I and I think other people want the setlist changed AND so much is because one they have so many hits to cover but they also have so many songs that have never or rarely ever been performed live so I ask why are they blowing this tour doing the same thing all the time? I thought that really good musicians were able to mix it up a bit? |

I unfortunately got royally pissed and am having difficulty remembering details of the gig. I know I enjoyed it immensely, but am waiting for an audio or video download to surface in order to refresh my memory somewhat. Sorry I didn't make it to the Talbot. I had to meet up with a London mate, and he was typically delayed. I forgot to check exactly where the Talbot was, and when we made it to Hyde Park at about 3:30 we asked someone where the Talbot was, and they directed us to a pub which turned out to be the Tyburn. Alas, and obviously, there were no Queenzoners there (to my knowledge), and instead me and my friend were accosted by a mad Paul Rodgers fan who insisted she was a demon at Bullseye on the quiz machine, but in reality was an ageing hippy with a penchant for pressing her ample bosom into my neck. We entered the throng midway through Razorlight's set, with ridiculous ease, getting right to the edge of the catwalk (left hand side) and about 12 people back. There was absolutely no need to queue early or anything like that. I've never been to a gig where it was so easy to get so close. But due to copious amounts of cider followed by vodka, I am unable to objectively critique the performance, which I actually think is a good thing. Ultimately, I had a fantastic night. Despite my massive love for Queen, I'm sure that had I remained sober I would have spent the entire night stroking my chin at the cheesiness of Bri, Rog and Paul, overanalysing everything they did, confirming my doubts of the whole venture. But thanks to my good friend alcohol I was able to sink below such higher-minded activities and sing and clap along like a goon to songs such as Ga Ga, Magic and Break Free, and revel in every minute of it. Highlight of the night was the intro to TYMD where Bri sprinted mere feet past me and my mate along to the end of the catwalk. We absolutely pissed ourselves for about 2 minutes flat, because it was for some reason incredibly, incredibly funny. |

For me it was "Say It's Not True" that was the highlight. It's a great song I'd not heard before and Roger sang it really well. His voice reminded me of "Fun In Space" and I think the song had a similar feel to several on that album. And I enjoyed "Imagine" and sang along with all my heart. And "when I look and I find - Brian May" was touching, though I had expected it. |

Mcm wrote: Yeah, and Great King Rat1138 forced us to drink far more beer than was sensible.I thought it was you... no, wait... me?... hmmm... Talbot was cool- really cool. We already knew in there they're gonna do IMAGINE, courtesy of ticketmaster and ppl who had to pick up their tickets before the gig- they heard soundcheck and THIS song... We drank a lot of beer, discussed some indie bands with eggy, some metal bands with Great King Rat, wandered about the setlist... Left quite late, missed Razorlight... Peter Kay was actually funny and than... the intro... I love it, I just love it- the moment when Brian hits few chords during LOSE YOURSELF, than Reaching Out and than blast through Tie Your Mother Down- awesome stuff. Add Fat Bottomed Girls and I was just happy... The only thing I didn't like- daylight. WTF? It didn't look very impressive than... Wishing Well, IWTBF- I love that stuff, but than we had a moment of... I dunno- was pretty depressing when Brian had to sing 39 almost by himself... I didn't enjoy the middle part of the show- Love Of My Life REALLY worked for me only in Brixton (because it was the first time), Say It's Not True is nice but nothing special... IMAGINE was a beautiful and moving thing and than Hammer To Fall kicked some serious ass... but... Let There Be Drums and I'm In Love were OK, but for some strange reason only OK... Same with These Are The Days... I love Roger on this tour, but... Maybe it's because it was too quiet? Yes- the whole thing was louder by BoRhap but before... It wasn't the best sound I've experienced this year... Everything really started by the second part of Radio Ga-Ga. There was a beautiful sunset and on the screens we had AMAZING footage. You'll guys for sure see it on DVD- IMO they should release THIS and put sheffield as a bonus. WHAT A FANTASTIC FOOTAGE THAT WAS. Mcm can confirm- I was on and on about it but... it was truly amazing... Things like Can't Get Enough, IWIA, All Right Now were just FANTASTIC, the last one being the best version I've heard on that trour!!! (and that was my 7th gig). Even A Kind Of Magic was great (only Birmingham version was as good)!!!FANTASTIC! When they finished and we were waiting for encores four of us (Mcm, me & my mrs. and Ania- friend from Poland) started shouting mustapha, mustapha (just like on Live Killers) and than started singing the song, which brought few smiles to some faces around us... When we lounched our version of loud Stone Cold Crazy- few guys joined in. Of course- there was no way they were going to do THOSE! :) They did Show Must Go On and again- could have been the best version on tour as well... WWRY/WATC- usual stuff, but really loud and really special- we KNEW it was the last time in Europe. For now anyway... Was great, really great. Atmosphere was relaxed, weather beautiful, wasn't as crowded as on the spring leg and... we were just outside the Golden Circle... Those who didn't make it to Talbot- maybe next time? :) Those who did- thanks, we had a cracking time! I can't wait for Hammersmith 2006 ;) |

Was a cool meet-up for sure. I keep meaning to email GreatKingRat about the DVD he mentioned! The snakebite you drank would have had me not managing ro walk to Hyde Park! |

That's an extremely accurate review of events my friend. I enjoyed Hyde Park more than any of the other seven gigs i've seen so far this year. As Fenderek said to me (on at least one occasion - ha ha!), the footage on the screens really was exceptional. It will be the main DVD release from this tour - no mistake. And with good reason. It's true that the daylight for the first hour was a pain in the arse but the band really delivered the goods and the Director's direction was as good as it gets. We even caught a glimpse of a grinning Gavin at one point who was (presumably) down the front as usual. Our rendition of Mustapha generated a few worried looks from people when we got to the 'Allah, Allah, Allah' bit which was quite funny. And the audience was really into it at the back as well which surprised me. You might expect the gold circlers to create most of the crowd atmosphere but even though they were largely composed of the 'Platinum Collection Brigade' and didn't know the 39's or the LOML's, the 'cheap seat' lot remained enthusiastic clappers and wavers throughout. Far more so than the Brixton-goers incidentally. All-in-all a fantastic night's entertainment. I'm already making arrangements for at least three shows in Japan. Anyone know whe ticket situation is for UK fans for this leg? Regards. |

What the hell, I enjoyed myself and that's the main thing!!! I think they should put out a double DVD with Sheffield and hyde park. the sheffield for the indoor and lights throughout and the park for the sheer spectacle and size and those shots as the sun went down. a triumph. lets hope they come back to do some more next year. dare i suggest the new wembley stadium next year?... |

A word of advice regarding a hasty getaway: Make sure you have a full tank of gas, leave the engine running, doors unlocked, and (this is key) BACK the car into the parking space! Strangely this same advice holds true for tailgating at The Meadowlands. Well, except for the part about leaving the engine running, unless your car is the one powering the blender and the big screen TV.Fenderek wrote:I'll be your accomplice!!!
