Well... I have had alot of chances to rewatch tons of Live 8 since it's all archived. By the way, I personally prefer the UK aol site. link Has better stuff with better sound and video quality. I have experienced the good, the bad, the ugly. But..I also got a chance to rethink some of my accolades and crticsm of many performers, one being Mr. Robbie. I still think..and this is just my personal opinion, that he SUCKS at doing Queen's WWRY. BUT before you all throw tomatoes at me... ...I have fallen in love with ''Angels''. Now being from the USA, I don't think I have ever heard the song, even though I KNOW it's like Britain's favorite #1 song in poll after poll. But, the song is stunning..and he makes it his own. and the way he performs it at Live 8, BECAUSE it IS his own, actually, his performance of ''Angels'' at Live 8, reminds me very much, NOT of Freddie or Queen, but of Bono and U2's star making performance at Live Aid. The way he jumped into the audience and posed and preened intentionally for all of the international press along the catwalk..as he was singing, and the way he went into the crowd and held and kissed the female fans (all...of which Bono did at Live Aid). His voice, interpretation, emotion, depth and range singing the song is indeed stellar and exquisite and you can feel his sincere energy, talent, and charisma on the song. I also did a little research and see that Robbie Co-wrote the song...which might explain and inform the energy and emotion he put into the song when performing it. The band that supported him on ''Angels'' was superior too. The guitarist playing slide, the drummer was awesome, and I'm not sure if they had a real string section playing or were duplicating string sounds on a synthesizer..but it all worked. I think Robbie..should stick to what he does BEST...His OWN material. He IS talented, but he should stop trying feeling as if he has to top Freddie or that he is in Freddie's shadow (which also comes across as arrogant and a wannabe)...and just be Robbie Williams. I think he also should give the USA another chance. If he could write and do more material like ''Angels'' and tour over here, well he certainly would get my vote and he's MUCH more talented that any Clay Aiken or Michael Buble. I have to say, I have watched his performance of ''Angels'' repeatedly and grow more in love with it each time. A true star and a stunning performance. |

Yeah it's on her 2003 Bonus Tracks version of ''In This Skin'' and I think she does it wonderful justice. I actually wasn't even sure if that was the same Robbie Williams song til I heard him do it at Live 8 and went...Well....Cool! But..how come Jessica got radio airplay for it here in the last year, and yet the song was recorded by Robbie in 1997, and yet I have NEVER heard his version here in the USA? |
Erin 14.07.2005 10:19 |
Pieter read somewhere that Jessica Simpson's father thought she would get a Grammy for her cover of "Angels"..hahaha (Btw, have you heard "These Boots Were Made for Walking"...eeek?!) I detest Robbie Williams, but yeah...Angels is a good song. I only had the misfortune of seeing WWRY at Live 8 the other day. Oh my..I see what everyone was complaining about! :-o Horrendous, to say the least. |

I agree that George Michael is actually....200 times more talented than Robbie! But.. as I said I DO like ''Angels'' and I still wonder why I have NEVER heard Robbie's version of that song get ANY radio airplay at all here. I have only heard Jessie Simpson's, version and then only this last year, on the radio, and also at the grocery store..YES..and ALOT at the grocery store, the Giant here in Maryland plays it all the time). Anybody know if Robbie's version was ever even released here in the USA? Gezz it came out in 1997. |

Oddly enough he does do quite a lot of original material! I find it strange that the fact he chucks in the occasional Queen cover makes you think that he doesn't! Mind you, his version of "She's the One" sounds virtually identical to World Party's... |

Angels is an excellent song, and Let Me Entertain You (Robbie williams version is a different song to the Queen one) is also a decent song. |

It's just hip-hop, and songs with no harmony whatsoever! Nowadays, this hip-hop guys are in everywhere, they literally own MTV. They even do tribute to Metallica!!! Robbie Williams tried the US market four years ago with his covers album, and he just couldn't make it. He was at the Jay Leno show (witch we at Queenzone talked at the time), and he tried to pass the image of a funny guy (like Robin Williams the actor) but for some reason he was not successfull in doin'it. At the time he said some jokes about Queen (this was after his participation on We ARe THe Champions with Brian and Roger) that we at Queenzone didn't liked, and Jay Leno was a little bit worried whether the crowd was going to understand the jokes. So, the year after he said that he wants to front Queen for tour the states (you all remember this). But his manager came up with a quote like this -"Robbie wants to front Queen because that's a good way to penetrate the US market". After a coment like this no tour could go ahead because it was clear that the only thing that matters to Robbie is The US market. When he released his next studio album, he was getting big promotion in the US by his company, because his album was an instant Hit all over Europe, his tour was sell out, and he played for more than a million people. So his company put 4 miliions albums on sale for it's first week in the US. Do you know what's happened?- The first week, the album sold 30.000 copyes, witch leaves the company with 3.970.000 on the shelves. It was a total disaster!! But you question is why? Because of radio stations. You only listened what they want you to listen. And TV stations are behaving the same way. Hip-hop has taken everything to a point that now it sells more than Country music. Some years ago MTV said with all the arrogance that they establish the trends. I think you people should teach this guys a lesson. More examples: At this years Oscars the artist that got the biggest promotion was Beyoncé. Why? There's a lot of money involved in this business. I´m not here to say that hip-hop is bad but it's ridiculous the attention people guive to rappers in the US. When you hear them talking, and realize that they don't have nothing to say or teach to the youngsters it scares me a little! So, if you want my opinion i think this guys are pressuring big time people on MTV and radiostations. THis guys are pure gangsters!! And if you look, their behaviour it's like i own this thing and can do whathever i want. To finish, i just want to say this: I think it's your loss, because in the past ten years you have lost great albums, and great tours that might not repeat again, so now at least you have a chance to see Queen. Let's see how you behave!! Last year we imported Briney Spears to Rock in Rio Lisboa (PORTUGAL). People in all over the world assisted to an American product, that was selling out all the venues, doing a thing that we never knew could happend!!- She was miming!! No one thought this could be possible, because she was this queen in the States. But it happen and it was a shame!! Her image was ruined and i doubt that she could sell big venues in Europe again after that. But the silly thing is, she's still a Queen in the States and people seems to like this type of products, so ... Here's your answer to why you never heard Robbie Williams singing Angels. Take care |

THe problem with Robbie is his big ego. I mean, it's not a bad thing to have a big ego, but if you let that take over your live then it might ruin it. Of course i think Robbie is one hell of an entertainer, and most people at Queenzone thinks the same. But his problem is that even though he has achieved a great career he wants more, and that more is to be Freddie Mercury. Well, let me tell you that i think that if he don't clear his mind, he might start ruin his life because even though he has everything to be a happy man, he misses that extra bit, and he could start feeling depressed as the years go by. Even though i'm not a Robbie fan, i like when he sings his songs, and even his covers album was not bad at all. But when he sings a Queen song it just don't "click" if you know what i mean. There isn't a quemistry whatsoever, and i'm not saying this to ruin it, it's a fact. I mean, listen to George Michael or Paul Rodgers without pre conceived ideas and judge for yourself. But this is just one side of the question, and if you want my opinion this was not the reason for Queen not touring with him. The biggest reason was his behaviour. He seeks for attention and he does whathever he can to get it (and he desperatilly wants attention in the US). Let me explain: - That incident in the Jay Leno show was just one example between many; - He moved to the states and started dating with the EX-wife of Rod Stewart. I'm not judging his feelings but at the time he was the only star that didn't care about the papparazy bacause their romance was on the headlines. I remember when he was fotograffed on their boat and he seems to like that kind of publicity; - After he recorded the duet with Nicole Kidman he was spot by Papparazy leaving the hotel where she was, to guive them the impression that they have spent the night toguether. More publicity that he enjoyed. When he was performing at a stadium, after he 'd finished the song "something Stupid" (his duet with Nicole), he looked at the crowd and said: "Yes, we did it". I thik this shows a total desrespect for Nicole's privacy or feelings!! - He claims that he has already had sex with four Spice-Guirls; - One time, he gave an interview to a British newspaper where he said that he wasn't certain of his sexualitty, he might be gay!! Well, on that ocasion there was a reporter that was comenting on his words and said that the problem with Robbie was that he was becoming a less interesting artist, so he was trying to become more interesting than he really was. The thing is, he can have sex with whoever he wants but i don't think that bringing that to the media is acceptale. It's desrespectfull to others people feelings, and some of his "conquers" are trying to constitute family, so i think you know what i mean! Now, can you imagine what can he do if he fronts Queen? Their relation wouldn't last the all tour because it's just like Roger Taylor said: "Robbie isn't much of a team player". I think Queen have a real good name to preserve and now they just want to concentrate on music. The easyest thing to do was to let Robbie sing with them. They could do stadiums all over europe, but they knew what might have happened!! Try this link:link Take care |

Bobby, thanks so much. Love that website and yes I read it thoroughly, so Robbie, well he's er..something else. here's a copy of when he bought his Los Angeles home. ''Robbie buys LA home - 17/10/02 Robbie Williams has splashed out £3.5 million on a mansion in LA, complete with its own pub. The Beverley Hills mansion also has six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a recording studio, gym, swimming pool and a library. His neighbours include on-off girlfriend Rachel Hunter, her ex-husband Rod Stewart, Christina Aguilera, Tom Jones, Will Smith, Sylvester Stallone and Madonna.'' .....You know, I forget where I read it, but right as the Queen+Paul Rodgers Tour began, I remember reading in an interview with Roger, where Roger diplomatically said something to the effect, when asked why Robbie had not been chosen for the tour, instead of Paul Rodgers, in light of all of Queen's work and good rapport with Robbie, something to the effect that, in America, Robbie was considered like you said to be a bit arrogant and too cheeky/offputting, and they wanted someone that American audiences would feel comfortable with... ....which shows that even though Brian & Roger weren't even certain this tour would tour in the USA, they were looking ahead to the possibilty, and so they nixed the idea of Robbie. ...Also..at Live 8, almost all of the press I have read has discussed that Robbie asked TV host Fern Cotton out on a date, ann NOT in a nice way, but in a cheeky, rude way, while she was interviewing him, and when she said, NO...he KEPT on asking anyhow. Even at Live 8, he has to be an unprofessional jerk. Bobby, I also did a search..for the any threads that discuss Robbie's comments and appearance on Jay Leno and while tons of threads on Robbie came up, I couldn't find that thread. Can you help please? As I would like to read that thread and Robbie's comments. Thanks. |

Couldn't find that either because probably it's a too old topic to be in the Queenzone "memory". For some reason the oldest topics i can find here are from 2004. Believe me, we didn't said nothing new about mr. Williams. Take care |

Well since I can't afford Queen+PR tickets I spent today trying something a little different. Since I wound up liking and was so impressed with Robbie's ''Angels'' performance at Live 8 so much,... ...I thought, aw, hell, I have an open mind. Give the guy a break. Yeah I know. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. LOL! :) The way I look at it, I am so utterly disgusted with most of the acts from the USA in the last 5 years, I was pleased to hear someone who can actually can sing and puts some showmanship and style into their vocals and performances. Now do not read more into this than I am saying. I am NOT saying he's some great legend talent this and that. What I am saying is that after 5 years of me enduring Britney, Beyonce, Pink, 50 cent, yada, yada, It was nice to hear someone who has a pretty voice, good vocal range, great showmanship (now I know what people mean when they say he's a great showman), decent and sometimes downright good songwriting and production. I even watched some live concert footage and his duets/videos with Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman, as well as his original videos for ''Angels'' ''She's The One'', and ...''Let Me Entertain You'' which rocked. Hmmmmmmm Even I am scratching my head! |
