Well, once again, Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey have proven that they are the the very best at what they do.
There was no better example on the day of how to approach an event like this - get on stage, plug in, blow the audience away and then leave. No gushy speaches espousing the merits of the event (who needs to be told again when Geldof is there drilling it home?).
No band on earth can hold a flame to The Who (or even what remains of The Who). The music is powerful, the lyrics span all generations and cultures.
Just as with The Concert For New York City, they werethe best and made me damn proud to know them.
I thought Floyd were better :) but saying that- the Who were absolutely fantastic! And they played my two fav tracks- Who Are You and Won't Get Fooled Again... And what an amazing versions they were! Great, great stuff- after Floyd second best act of the night... Amazing stuff- was almost surprised how good Mr Townsend still is- what a guitarist!!!
Here here, wstussyb. Amazing set by still an amazing band.

Your right. But The Who played the wrong songs and way to long for a international jukebox. My idea:
1. Substitute
2. Baba 'O Riley
3. My Generation
4. Pinball Wizzard
Really they where great and after seeing my fathers DVD of them at the Royal Albert Hall I thaught they totallt lost their voice. But this prooves it was just that end of the tour and they can still rock. Pink Floyd was also good though.
Wont get fooled again, IMO was about the best Rock song played that night, the Scream he did towards the end, simply classic.
while Pink floyd was great to sit back and listen and gather all that sound up, the who just rocked.
Vel. revolver, while not making out the best they can do, simply rocked, sounds like they had a off day, still that off day was better then most bands on thier on day.
Course this is all IMO.
Only managed to catch wont get fooled again, but it was amazing. They proved that the Who 2005 is still a force to be reckoned with.
I was a bit worried about how it would go without zak starkey, but the new drummer did excellent! He didnt have that Keith Moon-ness about his playing that Zak has though.
Does anyone know who the new drummer was? Is pino still in the group?
The drummer at the Live8 concert was Steve White, from Paul Wellers touring band. The fun thing is that he is the brother of Alan White who was the earlier oasis drummer.
I think its great that Zak gets to be a part of a major band that is still making records and not only doing 20 shows a year for a band of 60+ old men. The who are a really great band even to this day though.
*holds up lighter*
The Who are my second-fave, right behind Queen.
And I've seen both their Live Aid and Live 8 performances.
Live 8 was way better, even without Entwhistle.
My kudos to Townshend and Daltrey, who have created the greatest Who cover band known to man: The Who!
I am not even a Who fan and they totally rocked Live 8 and were definitally one of the top 5 acts for me...WAY better than Pink Floyd.
The Who more than made up for their Live Aid debacle and Townshend hasn't sounded that visceral in years. For 2 guys in their fifties, they rocked harded than any of the up and comers.
I think when people look back at Live 8, The Who's performance will be considered one of the defining acts. Completely at the top of their game and raw and powerful as ever.
