He said: "James told the guys we didn't have any cash. They recognised me, saw our Live 8 passes were genuine and seemed embarrassed to be clamping us. But their boss effectively told James 'We don't give a damn who you are, or whether it's Live 8 or not'. She said we'd have to pay the fine. In the end we caught a taxi." Homes for Islington, which oversees parking in the area, said yesterday: "As Pete couldn't pay, his car couldn't be unclamped." Doherty admitted he was puzzled why Elton had taken him under his wing.
