it is official, I was diagnosed with Diabetes today, the doctor was very concerned with not only my high blood sugar count, but my high cholesterol.. fortunatly I am on pills instead of the insulin shots.. but that is just for now, if it don't improve they will have to put me on the shots. After finding out the signs of diabetes I came to realize that I have had this for over a year now.. but didn't know it. I am lucky.. it hasn't done a lot of damage to my kidneys yet..... but this was a very scary day for me, it changed me forever.. life as I knew it is over, I have to change my entire eating habits and everything else.. but the good news, it won't kill me if I just do as I am told. there.. I said it.. I felt I owed it to the people that knew me for a while.. perhaps this was part of my mood swings.. of course I DO have my depression as well.. and am going to be getting that taken care of too.. but I have to get this under control first. |

as far as I know, diabetes is for life... it will be ok if I eat right and always monitor my sugar level. but I dont think this is something that will actually go away.. unfortunatly |
Megamike The GREAT 22.06.2005 19:53 |
I haven't really given that much thought yet.. I know if I do stay there will be tons of "I knew he wasn't going" remarks.. and of course I agree, I deserve some of them, but this time I think I will accept them and stay for now.. mainly for all the sympathy posts about my new illness... ;-) Kidding people.. kidding.. of course I will appreciate any donations you can give.. this is not a cheap illness.. :P |

All the best, Mike. My dad has diabetes, and so do both sets of my grandparents, so it's only inevitable that it happens to me somewhere along the line. |
Megamike The GREAT 22.06.2005 19:59 |
Well, it is best if you know the signs early... the one big giveaway for me was the never ending thirst... no matter how much water I drank I was still thirsty.. and up 2 or more times a night using the restroom.. and I was always tired... never figured that out.. until now that is.. now it all makes sense.. |

NO MORE COKE.. must be at least diet.. and I HATE that stuff.. but it is pop. |
KillerQueen840 22.06.2005 20:08 |
I know I wasn't planning on talking to you..but... DRINK DIET RITE! Oh that stuff is sooooooo good. I could seriously live off of it. Diet Rite has like a million flavors...a million delicious flavors. AND, use splenda. That stuff rocks...you can bake with it, make drinks with it, and so much more. I personally think Diet Rite cola is better than coke and pepsi. |

SO GLAD YOU ARE BACK! You take care of yourself. Stay away from sugar and white bread (that's worse than sugar..carbohydrates). We want you to stivk around for a LONG time! :) Every member of my family either through blood, or even marriage has had SEVERE diabetes, High blood prssure, and some kind of cancer. But every member of my family was morbidly obese and smoked 6 packs of cigarettes a day. I have never smoked, and USED to be thin, but even though I am eating LESS than ever, with being 44 now, being older and pre-menopausal my metabolism has slowed and I have gained 30 pounds in the last 4 years. So I am terrified of diabetes. Take your medicine. The pills should be fine if you follow the regimen. That way you can stay off the insulin syringes. And the new glucose monitors are quick and easy. Take care of yourself and Happy YOU ARE BACK! May The Force Be With You!!!! :) |

Cholesterhol wise-- if they have put you on zocor or lipitor or for that matter any pill be sure to go out and get C O Q10-- take at least 150mg of it a day-- statins remove Co Q10 from the body-- we naturally produce about 50mg at night of it-- if you do not supplement it you will get the muscle aches-the pains on up to liver and muscle damage also Flaxseed oil-- take 2 1000mg a day-one in the morning the other at night--this will lower your bad cholesterhol while raising your good one... non flushing niacin will also raise good cholesterhol vitimin c is also a good natural lowerer of cholesterhol there are some statins you should never take---crestor for one-- bad bad bad one... vytorin-- another one-- on study group has the same warning for this as they do for crestor and baycol, and celebrex watch the starch carbs and sugar too.... dr paul has left the building |

Mike you dont even need to be a Queen fan here, lots of people don't know much about the band anyways! It sucked about what you have, I remember the last 5 years of my mom's life how she had that, come to think of it most people in my family had it, so far I have seemed to avoid it. It's mostly an annoying habbit, no suger etc etc, you'll get used to it, sorta like a shitty diet |
teleman 22.06.2005 21:48 |
You just have to think about your food before you eat. Read labels so you know the carbohydrate contents. I've been insulin dependant for over 20 years and there aren't that many restrictions if you have knowledge. Take care. |
Erin 22.06.2005 22:03 |
You really should follow a strict diet. My father was a diabetic who started out on pills and ended up having to take insulin shots. I have to wonder if he couldn't have controlled it better through diet and not let it get to that point. |

My uncle is a diabetic as well...and although you will have to change your eating habits and be careful to watch your blood sugar, I am sure you will manage to get things on track to where it will all become second nature to you. It certainly is to my uncle after all the time that he has had it. Best wishes to you, Mike. |

Not good news at all, but glad it's not severe. Maintain your health to your greatest capacity. Be strong and don't let it get the best of you. Take care, Mike. |

I wish you all the best Mike!!! My grandmom has diabetes and is 93 years old... so like you said, as long as you just take the advise nothing will happen. |
Lisser 24.06.2005 10:20 |
It's good that you've been diagnosed and you can get the treatment your body deserves. One of my best friends has been a diabetic since the day after her 1st birthday. They found out bc she went into a diabetic coma and was in kidney failure. She is a very brittle diabetic but has amazing control over her sugars. I've seen her dump 2 packs of equal and 4 packs of sugar in one glass of iced tea!!! I've seen her drink Mt. Dew, Dr. Pepper, Orange Sunkist, etc one after another!! I asked her how she can get away with that..she says she adjusts her insulin (she takes injections 2x a day)!!! I get mad at her but she seems to know what she's doing. She can tell you within 2 points of what her sugars are before she tests them. I guess if you've basically always lived with it, you know nothing different. The only thing I can think of to offer that everyone else here hasn't already mentioned is to take special care of your feet. If you get any sores or anything at all unusual with your feet you need to call your doctor asap! We have a nice group of physicians on the Zone!!! Best Wishes Mike!! |
Megamike The GREAT 24.06.2005 11:39 |
yeah the doctor drilled the foot thing into me while I was there... at the moment I have very HIGH blood sugar, it hasnt dropped below 250... and just this morning it was 279.. and that was before eating.. and the doctor told me that it might take a couple months to get this under control, but I PRAY I dont have to do the shots, I am using the pills right now.. I know it won't happen overnight but I need to change my eating habits drasticlly... I learned that Ketchup is out of the question.. and for me that is like my blood, I use ketchup on just about everything. |
Lisser 24.06.2005 12:11 |
I'm sure you will do the right things!! You don't have to get the injections if the actual shot is what you are afraid of. They make those insulin pumps now too. We have two diabetic students at my school. They both have the pump. I'm hearing there have been lots of break-throughs in the area of diabetic research. It looks very hopeful for a cure or a better method of treatment. I guess with taking the gluco pills you can't really adjust the amount of insulin you take to combat the amount of carbs or sugar you injest since the pills are pre-measured. I think that is how my friend gets away with eating whatever she wants even though she shouldn't be doing that. She has NEVER drank diet soda, NEVER. Best wishes to you Mike and to Janet. You both know we are all here for you to vent on if things get scary or frustrating. :) |
