i dont own hot space but ive heard all this talk of drum machines. didnt roger play anf proper drums at all on the album. im pretty sure that under pressure used real drums. also was this the case on any other albums.
Roger was experimenting with new sounds at the time. For me, he took it a little to the extreme, but they were trying something different - unlike the same old, same old that turned up on The Works, AKOM and The Miracle.
Acoustic drums are played on most songs on the album (Put Out The Fire, Life Is Real, Las Palabras, Cool Cat, Staying Power, Calling All Girls), but there are also drum machines (pads) used on Back Chat and Dancer (as well as acoustic).
Fred was spot on when defending the album - ironically, it's one of my top 5 Queen albums - simply for the fact that it's the last time they bothered to do anything that challenged the listener and the fact that LIVE, the songs became incredibly heavy.
8 out of 10.

Cool Cat and Staying Power contains both drumcomputers, there are some snare smashes in Staying Power. Body Language is also with a drum computer.
They're not computer drums as much as drum machines. Btw, just to be clear, drum machines aren't the same as e-drums or drum pads.
Back Chat seems to contain the three of them (acoustic, electric, programmed)

I couldn't agree more with you on that one! That's one of my favourites as well, and the thing is that Queen took out the best of each song on the tour, making them heavier than they really are on the album! btw, I don't really mind the drum pads... I actually like 'em.. Love that two big smashes on Radio Ga Ga chorus, for example, on 'Put out the fire' live, etc...
