...why? Yeah, dumb question, I know, but I actually got round to getting off my lazy ass and buying the album last weekend (among other things... like the giant dildo hidden in the bottom of my bag, :P) and I really can't see why everyone's so negative about it - it's bareable... Anyway, why do you lot hate it so much? And yes, I know we've discussed this before... |

Back Chat is class. And live? One of the best. It's a shame that Hot Space wasnt made to sound in the same musical vein as The Game. I personally think it would've sounded much better with the stripped down sound Mack had given them, you know - perhaps with less trumpets, and more guitar orchestration, and more of the crisp drum beats and less of that flat drum machine stuff etc etc |
bgordon88 21.06.2005 07:11 |
...I agree that sound they had on "The Game" was really crisp and minimal and unfortunately never repeated. However NOTW benefits from having a stripped down sound as well. Hot Space - the quality of the songs was good but not outstanding. It's like Queen on a bad day still beat most bands hands-down. |
Ms. Bea Haven 21.06.2005 09:36 |
I've never commented on Hot Space. I LOVE this record!!! There are a few tracks that I can do without (Body Language, Life is Real) - but the rest of it is one of the best records/cds for driving...I've always loved the 'funk' - and I was actually glad when they put this record out. I love A1BtD, and this was a great follow up to that. I listen to all kinds of music - it actually frightens some of my friends - I'll go from rockin the night away to dancing the night away - Queen to Disco without even missing a beat...Brazilian Jazz...anything except country or rap and I'm happy. |

why???....Hot space is a great album. It's a bit different from other Queen-albums, but that's the point! it have different sounds and riff in calling all girls is great =) |

I love Hot Space. Body Language and Cool Cat aren't that great, but the rest is great stuff. |

I have said this many times on QZ, Hot Space may not be my favorite Queen album, but I love it anyhow. How can you not like such timeless songs as Las Palabras De Amor, Life Is Real, and of course, Under Pressure? I think Calling All Girls is fun and catchy with a pre..Duran Duran type feel to it. I just don't get why people still rag on it. Not every Queen album has to be a masterpiece of art, an ANATO..to have merit and still be a good record with good tunes. Yeah, Back Chat and Body Language suck, but most albums by any artist are gonna have 1 or 2 clunkers on a whole album. Overall, I like it and I wish people would stop acting like Queen had developed an aurel version of the plague when they did this. Just cuz it was SO dramatically different from their hard rock sound that people and longtime fans had grown accustomed to, doesn't take away from the fact that fans and people should be openminded about this record as a decent record with decent music on its own. Christ on a bike...most long term career music artists change, evolve, experiment with tons of diffrent sounds through the course of their careers. I still applaud them for trying out some different styles of music..and alot of the songs are very good. My personal favorite is STILL Las Palabras De Amor. It's stunning and the words are very meaningful. Beautiful orchestration, arrangment, Freddie's singing and Brian's writing deserve definite props! |

People who don't like "Hot Space" are close-minded teeny-headed individuals who aren't willing to enjoy music that's outside of the ordinary. If they think Queen is JUST a rock band, they are horribly mistaken. They are a rock/ragtime/jazz/blues/disco/dance/pop band. |
NOTWMEDDLE 21.06.2005 15:34 |
Staying Power kicked ass LIVE Dancer was my favorite on the first half Back Chat rocked live Body Language was cool Action This Day was given a jolt live Put Out the Fire was great live despite it missed the second solo and chorus. Life is Real was my favorite on the second half Calling All Girls rocked live Las Palabras De Amor was good Cool Cat was a great riff but the falsetto got on my nerves, it sounded like it could have been sung in an Issac Hayes sort of way Under Pressure, without saying! |
mrjordy 21.06.2005 18:10 |

Umm... Did you miss "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" on Sheer Heart Attack? B/c that was pure ragtime. Ditto for Seaside Rendezvous or Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon off of ANATO. |

People, People! Why does everyone say Hot Space Sucks? It does not suck! It's a very good album. True, when you compare it to other Queen albums like Innuendo, The Game, and A Night At The Opera, it's not as good. However it still has great songs. Staying Power (though I prefer it live ie. Milton Keynes), Life Is Real, Las Palabras De Amor, Under Pressure...all good songs. Like any album it has some not so great songs - Dancer, Body Language. Overall though it is good, and remember at least it's not Flash Gordon!! |
kdj2hot 22.06.2005 00:04 |
Hot Space sucks. There I said it. IT's not a good example of black or funk music. To call anything on that album funk is a damn joke. Honestly it is. Funk around that era was Prince or Rick James, to think anything on Hot Space is on that lebvel is laughable. So that's one strike against the album, they failed at what they were trying to do with the funk thing. Another strike is the flat drum machines and synth, the minimal synth but real drums and bass on the game actually made the Game great, Anotehr one bites the dust was and IMHO the superior Dragon Attack (obviously a funk-rock classic that couldve stood as an A_side single I know) were gerat because of the real drums and bass. WHo knows, maybe staying power could've worked if it was less synth Heavy. I know Dancer could've been great just based on the break down towards the end, where no synths were used. Well I'm losing my thought train so I'll end this rant. I'll clsoe by syaing Hot Space sucks again... I guess because so many people say it doesn't...ahhh, I have to be honest with myself, it doesn't suck but it's not great, far from it. The words of love is a medicore May ballad, that would probably be on the bottom half of songs on any previous Queen album (The works and A Kind of magic IMO are on some levels worse than Hot Space)...hey I just got my train of thought back. Hot Space sucks to me only because it was the start of a dark period for Queen. Not that its really horrible. In my opinion the Works is the worse album from them, and A kind of magic wasnt much better. Some spots on Hot Space atleast still had the same magic from their previous 8, like Under Pressure, I don't want to say Put out the Fire, I like it but its more of a preview of the post Game era (i.e. the Works, A kind of magic) . ALl in all what Hot SPace represents (the band whoring themselves in a failed attempt to pander to the funk buying public, a preview of the 2 album down swing from them) makes Hot Space the scape goat to me. I really don't know if Queen wouldve broken out of the mundane rut if Freddie wasnt faced with his own mortality by the time of the Miracle. As much of a double edge sword as it sounds like, havind AIDS jolted life in to Freddie's work I think. I don't know if he would've wrote a song like Innuendo if he didn't have it. |
nasty_queenie 22.06.2005 02:12 |
I actually bought it today and I'm listening to it right now. It's kind of hard to tell as it's only my first listen but I'm really liking it. |
The King Of Rhye 22.06.2005 02:51 |
Hot Space......I'd call it the worst Queen album, but then again, I think Queen's worst stuff is better than a lot of other artist's best! Any album with Under Pressure, Las Palabras De Amor, Life Is Real and Put Out The Fire on it cant be too bad :)........I dont understand all the people slamming Back Chat tho....I kinda like that one (and it was great live, but thats not really the point) The only song I really dont like is Cool Cat....altho I am starting to warm up to the unreleased version with David Bowie on backing vocals... |
Mercuryworks 22.06.2005 03:01 |
Hot Space did not suck at all. It was a time for experimenting with certain genres of music. They had to try some dance type music. Who knows, what if Hot Space wasnt made. Queen would definately see it as a lost opportunity. But backs to what I was stating originally, it was a time for experimenting. This type of music was gettin big then. Think of some funky/dance hits from the 80s. Whip It-Devo Safety Dance-Men without Hats Tainted Love-Soft Cell Sweet Dreams-Eurithmatics Cars-Gary Numan Countless Hits like this .... Now think about it. If Queen were still together (with Freddie and John) don't you think they would have released a R/B and Rap album. Though it is hard to picture John as a Gansta and Freddie, Brian, Roger in "ghetto" clothing. It would have been tryed. Because what if that was what they were REALLY good at. Then you would have another Bo Rhap wouldn't you. Point:Give them a break In simplest terms: Ok, lets say you LOVE steak and potatoes. You are known to eat steak and potatoes. Hell, other people like the steak and potatoes you make. Then one day you see someone eat a Hamburger and they REALLY like it. And other people like it. Wouldn't you try it. What if you like it. What if you think it tastes like crap. In regards to synths. Same thing, trying out new things. What if people like Queen w/ synths more the Queen without them. To me, I like the album, It was the second album I ever bought, next to Live Killers, (though I heard every Queen song prior to that.) I think it is quite a toetapper. I think it would be great for parties and dancing. Also, has anyone ever said to you "You don't know if you like it until you try it." In conclusion, I will end this with a Freddie Quote "If you dont like it, Fuckin Go Home." |
bgordon88 22.06.2005 05:02 |
I agree with a previous posting that it had stronger songs overall that The Works and A Kind Of Magic although the sound of the latter two albums was probably more in keeping with what people expect of Queen. Queen were having a kind of identity crisis in the 80s. They seemed desparate to survive commercially whereas perhaps they should just haved strived for excellence like they did in the early days. |

okay it doesn't suck as compared to other artists but it is by far the worst album Queen ever put together... Staying Power: barely okay...the synth and horns may have worked on a Freddie solo album but it's not Queen....not enough guitar..cowbell was the best part....but cheesy synth sounds...WAY better in Milton Keys when they could rock it out... Dancer: Actually rocks and is pretty good....could have rocked more though Back Chat: Again is okay...nice solo in the end Body Language: brutal as a song....it's really not much of a song at all...again way more suited as a Freddie solo project Action This Day: very weak due to the production...lame drum sounds...sounds like it was recorded in a broom closet Put Out The Fire: Best track on the album...Rocks Big Time Life Is Real: poignant ballad - Queen calibre Calling All Girls: Okay as a track on an album - no complaints Las Palabras De Amor: Probably the second best track Cool Cat: Again this should have been a Freddie solo project...Great display of his falsetto on a weak backdrop....not worthy of the Queen name though Under Pressure: I never really considered this to be part of the album since it was a Greatest Hits track before: Obviously this one is classic and one of their best of all time....For a first time buyer..this song may save the album for someone....without it you really have only 3 or four strong tracks overall....okay I guess but not their best by far |
Grantcdn 23.06.2005 00:35 |
really most of Hot Space should have just been a Freddie solo album....then they could have made a proper Queen album in 82/83 time frame...it probably would have saved most of the US fans |
