Hands down for me, The Allmans...past, present, through oh about a dozen lineups that I have followed from their legendary heydey with Duane Allman (THE greatest Guitarist EVER..who Mojo magazine said "even God, called him God...), & Berry Oakley...
..to their new incarnation with current not so newbie members Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge.
BUT...I would like to say that I ADORE The Black Crowes and every album they have done...
..and in 1994...when I went to see The Allman Brothers Band in their first Horde Tour, The Black Crowes...were SUPPOSED to play the 2nd stage, which I was THRILLED about...but, they were a no show..and instead I had to put up with Sheryl Crowe and Blues Traveler...Yuck.
Just want to say I adore The Crowes & Chris & Rich Robinson might fight more than Oasis' Gallagher Brothers, but I love em' too.
But...The Allman Brothers Win hands down. I swear I have lost count how many times I have seen them live in....Maryland, Florida, Pennsylvania, Virginia.....
How can you top...Dreams, Melissa, Blue Sky, Jessica, In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed, Mountain Jam, One Way Out, Stateboro Blues, Seven Turns, Where It All Begins, Win, Lose, Or Draw, Pony Boy, Don't Kepp me Wonderin', Dimples, Come & Go Blues, Just Ain't Easy, Revival, etc.....
Allman Brothers just for Duane Allman.
I saw Derek Trucks on his first tour when he was 12. My band was playing the same venue on a different stage. Quiet but nice kid. And talented.
Seven turns on the highway, Seven rivers to cross.
Sometimes, you feel like you could fly away, Sometimes, you get lost.
Black Crowes just don't really do it for me anymore. I saw them a couple of times and they were good but they don't really hold my attention

Duane Allman...Like Freddie, I never got to see perform live. How I adore him.
The entire reason Clapton's Layla & Assorted Love Songs is such a triumph...is BECAUSE of Duane Allman's playing on that, which Clapton himself openly admits to. Plus Duane inspired Clapton to play at his most legendary heights as well.
Glad to see someone knows the words to "Seven Turns". Love that song.
Oh, I also saw Derek Trucks for the first time, BEFORE he had joined the Allman Brothers, when he was a wet behind the ears kid playing a FREE bar & cheeseburger joint a block up the street from me when I lived in Fort Lauderdale, FL in 1991.
Derek was 11 years old then with his own band, all guys in their 30's and blew them away.
I ADORE him now with The Allman Brothers, and with his own Derek Trucks Band.
As for Gregg Allman, talk about a golden voice for blue eyed soul. He's as original as Duane. Plus Gregg wrote Dreams and Melissa, and yes. Whipping Post..which I didn't bring up cuz that's as overplayed on classic rock stations as Queen's BoRhap. You would think the Allman Brothers didn't record any other song than Whipping Post.
No contest.
The Allman Brothers invented the genre of southern rock.
So short lived was Duane Allman. The man who rewrote the book on electric slide lead. Did you know that he took 9 months off from playing in his and Greg's previous band(Allman Joys)to teach himself slide? Greg said that was the longest period of time he was ever seperated from his older brother.
Duane came back from his slide learning sabbatical and formed the original Allman Brothers Band and they were fantastic from the get-go till Duanes's tragic death just a mere three years later. An amazing band. The original ABB were definitely one of America's most important bands.

Yep..know their whole story. The Allman Joys and The Hourglass.
Gregg got stranded in Los Angeles stuck in a hideous record contract that all but stole every cent from him while Duane was back east.
Then Gregg made it back home and Duane bought his first guitar with motorcycle parts. And his infamous slide was a Coricidan cold pill bottle from when he got the flu so bad, he was stuck in bed, emptied out the pill bottle, and started playing slide with it!
He also was a master slide player not only on Gibson,(Les Paul & SG) but on Dobro..which Eric Clapton asked Duane to teach him how to play (Dobro that is)!

you need a 'remedy' brother
LOL! Great song too! I love "Thorn In My Pride" (My favorite song by them) also on the "Southern Harmony & Musical Companion" album.
