About time Queen were recognised, but I agree it should also have been awarded to Roger and John, it might have got John out of hiding. |

I agree it's great about David Jason; I can see tomorrow's tabloid headlines now - "Arise Sir Del Boy !". I bet at least one UK tabloid has that as it's front page headline tomorrow.... |

Terry Wogan isn't even British (he's Irish) so he can't actually use the title 'SIR' before his name. I suppose Brian was introduced to the Queen a few month ago with a few other guitarists, when she didn't know who they were. Maybes this is her way of saying sorry. |

Here's the press release off Bri's website. If you read this, you will see that the honor was in my opinion, based on Brian's charity work, and helping social/good causes, as much as for his music...but that is STILL GREAT! Let's not pick on Queen Elizabeth that she didn't knight him. I wish she had too, but this is STILL a humbling honor. I think the reason ONLY Brian got it, and NOT Roger & John, is that Brian is so ACTIVELY involved, on a regular basis, in charity work. The press release below seems to concentrate on that. Not just the AIDS charity work,... ...(which I KNOW Roger does as well), ...but also Brian's work with Riffathon, Cancer, the Bone Marrow bank, etc. etc. Hopefully, Roger will have his day too and be honored too, as he HAS done SO much for Nelson Mandela's 46664, and for The Mercury Pheonix Truct & Terrance Higgins Trust. I personally think, and hope that ONE day, the entire band...Queen...will be honored by Queen Elizabeth, Freddie included. Let's all hope for the best. Cheers! I would also like to say...let's all BE SUPPORTIVE OF BRIAN...and be HAPPY for Brian...and On behalf of myself, and I would hope of behalf on Queen fans and Brian May fans, worldwide, that we are ALL exceedingly PROUD of and happy for you Brian. Our heartfelt congratulations to you, on being bestowed with an honor you very much deserve. **Sat 11 Jun 05** BRIAN MAY, CBE Extract from The Queen's Birthday Honours List (pages 9 and 10) We are delighted to report that our own Brian May has been honoured with a CBE, Commander Of The British Empire, in the Queen's Birthday Honors List, just published: "C.B.E. To be Ordinary Commander(s) of the Civil Division of the said Most Excellent Order: MAY, Dr. Brian, Composer, Guitarist and Singer. For services to the Music Industry." Brian has worked very hard for a large number of charitable causes over the years - really making a difference - these include, among many, The Mercury Phoenix Trust and The British Bone Marrow Donor Association, and currently Nelson Mandela's 46664 appeal. QUEEN GUITARIST MAY'S LONG CAREER Queen guitarist Brian May's CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, recognising his services to music, is another landmark in a career spanning four decades. With the hugely successful rock band Queen, May enjoyed huge worldwide success. Born in Twickenham, Middlesex, in 1947, astronomy student May formed Queen with drummer Roger Taylor in the early 1970s. They recruited flamboyant singer Freddie Mercury and bass player John Deacon. Queen's powerful glam rock sound - including May's distinctive guitar solos - and Mercury's camp theatrics meant they soon enjoyed a couple of top 10 hits and established a strong live following. Their innovative seven-minute "mini opera" single Bohemian Rhapsody elevated them to the stadium concert league. May and Queen drummer Roger Taylor continue to work together. Released in 1975 and again in 1991, the single "Bohemian Rhapsody" spent a total of 14 weeks at number one in the UK charts. In 2002, May said: "It has become a classic phenomenon and one which no one will ever allow us to forget." A run of hit singles and albums followed. Songs like "We Will Rock You", "Somebody to Love" and "We are the Champions" became anthems. Charity work: They recorded the soundtrack to the film Flash Gordon in 1980 and collaborated with David Bowie on the single Under Pressure the following year. A memorable performance at Live Aid was generally considered to be among the highlights of the charity show. But the band's output lessened in the late 1980s as they concentrated on other projects. And the band suffered a huge loss when Mercury died of Aids in 1991, having battled the illness for some time. May went on to release solo work and the rest of the band worked together sporadically. What no CBE for Paul Rodgers ? This is not right. Considering the amount of hero worshipping he gets on here and his "legendary status"(LOL) I expect people like English Yob and Linda "slapper of" of Valley to start protesting outside Buckingham Palace |

Her Majesty read all these anti-Brian topics on QZ and wanted to support him - that's the real reason why he's honoured, not John nor Roger. |

Brian hasn't got his award for writing such famous songs such as We Will Rock You or Fat Bottomed Girls, it's for all his charity work. You'll be waiting a long time before you see Roger or especially John getting an award like that. I think some of you just throw logic out of the window before you post. You forget John was seen as just the bass player, and nobody has heard from him for years. Lets see some knighthoods for Freddie and Lennon. There's no excuse not to. Although, would Freddie be allowed one? Or was he classed as British? |

The June 11, 2005 issue of London's "The Times" newspaper featured an in depth article and a complete list, chronicalling all of the people awarded honors by Queen Elizabeth in her Birthday Honours Awards. Included, was a glowing, highly reverential discussion of Brian May being awarded the title of CBE. Page 6 Article By Jack Malven, Arts Reporter with a headline "ROCK STARS RECOGNISED FOR CHARITY WORK" "Guitar greats are honoured for worldwide aid efforts" "THE QUEEN will have her second chance to become acquainted with members of the rock aristocracy after a pair of guitarists she failed to recognise were included in her Birthday Honours lists." "Brian May, of the rock group Queen, and Jimmy Page, a founder member of Led Zeppelin, are admired the world over for their skill with the guitar, but Her Majesty seemed unaware of their fame when she met them in March. "And what do you do?" she asked the guitarists, who had been invited to the Palace along with Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck." "May, who is appointed CBE, said: "I feel very grateful for the recognition. It is not something I have ever sought. The first thing that comes into your head is that you wish your mum and dad were there to enjoy it. But I am happy that my wife and kids will be able to enjoy it too." "The guitarist, speaking from Tromso in Norway, where he had been (actually was that very day) performing in a concert to raise money to combat Aids in South Africa, said that he was touched that friends had campaigned for him to be honoured." Page 6 Glorious photo of Brian looking wonderfully regal and majestic, playing "God Save The Queen" atop the roof of Buckingham Palace during the Queen's Golden Jubilee with caption: "Brian May, the guitarist with Queen, is appointed CBE." Page 80 From the complete list of all the Queen's Birthday Award Honorees. "Dr. Brian May. Composer, guitarist, and singer, servies to music industry." I want to say that when Brian mentioned how he wished that his Mom and Dad were there to see him receive this honor and enjoy it with him, I CRIED my eyes out. Very touching and moving. And I am happy for him and that he said he is glad that Anita and his children are there to enjoy it with him. I know it must be hard..not having your parents be there with you at such a proud and wonderful and meaningful time..and I also know it's NOT the same...feeling from other relatives or we at QZ... but Brian, we at QZ ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU AND HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!!! |

Given the Queen has never heard of Eric Clapton, I doubt she even knows who Brian is or what he's done (even if he did play on her roof). I assume some panel comes up with the names for honours and she just runs a signature over it. Still, it's nice to see Brian get some credit for a change. Where's Lenny Henry's knighthood though? |
