Well now having myself seen Skynyrd LIVE 3 times... ...Queen+Paul Rodgers covering Freebird?.. ...& how does Brian do the triple guitar attack of the original lineup of Gary Rossington, Allan Collins, & Ed King (later Steve Gaines)... ..or the reformed 1991-present version which I have seen with Gary Rossington, Ed King, Randall Hall, (later Rickey Medlocke, Hughie Thomasson).. I gotta hear Paul singing Ronnie's part."won't you fly me a freebird yeah!!!" Get out your bic lighters. Queen doing Southern Rock! |

I appreciate Lynryd Skynyrd. They were a pretty damn good band. They played with a lot of fire. I've just recently listened to Second Helping for the first time in long while and I must say that it's really a superb album. |

Didn't Roger once said he hated that song? |
Teo_torriate04 02.06.2005 10:23 |
I thought it was merely reported as being one of the songs played over the PA before the concert at some of the venues. Is this where the confusion lays ? |

I think Lynyrd Skynyrd are great, but didn't Roger think they were arseholes when they met them on tour in the 70's? |
mr bad guy 5656 02.06.2005 13:09 |
You're damn right! I think he said it in Uncut magazine march '05. I really can't believe they did that. Maybe it isn't roger who's drumming but a session musician dressed up as him... Oh hell, they should have done this with john deacon. Nobody would have noticed it. |

wesi72 wrote: I think Lynyrd Skynyrd are great, but didn't Roger think they were arseholes when they met them on tour in the 70's?Well...as musicians and performers, I like Skynyrd's music alot..like I said I've seen em 3 times in concert..and I met them once too at a meet & greet. I used to think the world of them...but... Let's see...as people though... ...Artimus Pyle was constantly squablling with theband and left Skynyrd for better things which turned out to be...being arrested for child molestation or something to that affect, Billy Powell was arrested for beating the living crap out of his wife, Allan Collins couldn't lay off drugs & booze & got arrested UMPTEEN times for wrapping his car around trees while wasted til the idiot finally was in such a bad wreak his passenger...his girlfriend was killed & he was charged with vehicular manslaughter..and Collins was paralyzed from the waist down & died in the early 90's from pneumonia complications related to his being paralyzed. Leon Wilkeson was a violent drunk who met up with some not so nice associates..one night the band found his throat slashed on the tour bus (he survived)...it's disputed wether his ex-girlfriend did it or a pissed off Ed King...then Wilkeson got liver disease from boozing and died a few years back. Ed King also squabbled with the band and depending on who you speak to..after he SUED Skynyrd..he was either fired or he quit. Gary Rossington can't lay off the booze and drugs...used to wrap his cars around trees. Became supposedly sober, but got so overweight (he makes Roger look anorexic) that a few years back he needed quintuple bypass heart surgery & the drs ordered him to stop treating his body like a garbage dump. Every single original member of the band has sued one another repeatedly..including the estate of Ronnie Van Zandt..Judy..Ronnie's wife..who is a Hard Ass Red neck BITCH big time if you see her in interviews. You think some people on QZ are pissed about Roger & Brian touring in 2005 using the name and as Queen,... ...well Judy sued the remaining band members after the plane crash a zillion times saying they couldn't call themselves Skynyrd.. ...then Judy finally came to a "financially agreeable" agreement in 1991...but every year she still is battling Rossington in court about anything he & the band do over releases of music old & new, box sets, tours, merchandise, DVD's, concert footage. Half the time the damn band is duking it out in court. Ed King sued Gary. Randall Hall sued Gary. Gary sued Judy. Judy sued Gary...etc. etc. etc. Fellow QZoners, these (Skynyrd) are NOT nice people. EVEN back in the original days of Skynyrd...you know how Ronnie & Gary used to...chill as friends...by brawling with one another til they were bloody & Ronnie gored Gary with a broken bottle. True Story. This was NOT a fight too. They were only "playing". |

Yes,they don't appear to be that friendly a bunch! I saw a documentary about them once (I think it was Behind The Music on VH1) and thought it was one of the saddest stories I have ever heard. Musically though, they are very good. I would like to go to see them live having seen a recent DVD of a concert (Vicious Cycle Lyve?). They sound a bit like the Beach Boys and Guns n' Roses rolled into 1 group (and then some)! |

Lynyrd Skynyrd hated Queen And Queen Hated Lynyrd Skynyrd. Fact. |
omega 02.06.2005 15:49 |
well roger hated them , not sure about the others |
doremi 02.06.2005 15:52 |
And...I heard that The Outlaws' Hughie Thomasson, who took Ed King's place in Skynyrd for gosh, almost a decade now...got pissed at Rossington (Gary Rossington must be some son of a bitch cuz everybody in Skynyrd hates him & quits & sues him),.... left Skynyrd in a huff...and now reformed The Outlaws..which were a has been band when I saw them at.... .... a BIKER bar in the rural country part of Maryland in 1989! I was about the only NON biker at the bar.!!!! So for Thomasson to leave Skynyrd who are still playing stadiums and selling records...to go back to playingh biker bars...he must be PISSED!!!! |

Let me tell you I would not want to personally associate with anyone in Skynyrd. They were very sweet to me at the meet & greet. But that was hosted by a BIG radio station in Florida to promote their "comeback" in 1991 at The Miami Arena...and they had tons of record PR people around them at a yuppy restaurant for lunch with balloons...all very orchestrated and lovely... ...course I fell for it. Thought what lovely guys. But the horror stories of their criminal, violent behavior...rediculous! I mean Allan Collins killed his girlfriend when driving that car while wasted out of his mind for the umpeeteenth time, Artimus Pyle molested a little girl, Billy Powell beat his wife, they are always beating one another up or suing one another. These are not 20 year old kids anymore too. All the members of Skynyrd that are still alive are in their late 50's. ....I mean Queen were no saints in the 1970's either....they partied and such... But you NEVER heard about any member of Queen beating or hurting anyone...ever. And by the 1980's, Freddie, Brian, Roger, & John matured, settled down, and grew up...as any person should. They learned from their hedoniostic behavior from the 1970's and stopped doing that and again..not a single member of Queen ever beat, stabbed, molested, or killed anyone. No wonder Roger said what he did. I don't blame him. Oh...and you think Queen feels slighted in the USA? Well at least they got inducted into the USA Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame,....which is very biased and getting inducted has a LOT of politics behind it. Well Skynyrd (namely Gary Rossington) has complained for YEARS...that Skynyrd have never been inducted in the USA Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. But many people in the music industry and press in the USA have said...that the reason is because Skynyrd are looked on as THUGS...almost the caucasian original version of the way today's gangster Rap artists lead their lives...with thuggery and violence and that Skynyrd, are their own undoing. |

Skynyrd were wild. Queen and Pink Floyd were tame. Aside Syd Barrett who used to abuse LSD, the rest of the band mainly drank. Occasionally, both Rick Wright and David Gilmour smoked weed. In 1975, Gilmour stopped smoking altogether(weed and cancer sticks) after hearing the coughing fit which was his at the beginning of the title cut to Wish You Were Here. A few months later in August of 1975, Roger Waters quit smoking as well and he admitted this in an interview in the June, 2003 issue of Uncut. By 1977, Gilmour brought his family(his first wife and daughter then subesquently two more daughters and son. In 1994, he brought his girlfriend now wife Polly Samson on the road and two of his four kids from first marriage went along as well) on the road as did Waters but Mason and Wright wouldn't follow suit until later. I know John Deacon occasionally brought his wife and kids on tour. |

anyway, Lynyrd Skynyrd are great, but i prefer Queen ;) Just wanted to know if its true that they played it in Newcastle but it seemed to be a joke, usually i'm always suspicious if someone posts things like that, but this time i believed that they really played "free bird" |

The 3 times I saw Skynyrd in concert, well they usually attract an audience every bit as wild and criminal and violent as themselves... ....90% of the audience were hard core bikers, and BIG time rednecks yelling rebel yells with Confederate flags, drunk and wasted out of their minds. ...The 2nd time I saw Skynyrd...I sat in the covered seated pavilion of the amphitheater of Merriweather Post in Maryland. I hear people SCREAMING.... Bunch of rednecks set a FIRE on the lawn area. Skynyrd had to stop the show. I thought we would be evacuated but security & the cops put out the fire and arrested the rednecks who started it. 3rd time I saw Skynyrd, security interrupted the show...TWICE for stabbings!!!! For real. Me and my friends LEFT...early...and I have NEVER gone back to see Skynyrd since. |

Yeah Skynyrd were definitely a pretty good band...I think they should add that American Idol runner up Bo as their lead singer....obviously they don't compare to Queen or Queen + Paul Rodgers but they were a really cool band... |
Haystacks Calhoun 04.06.2005 22:59 |
Every band, regardless of musical style, SHOULD be required, by Law, if necessary, to play FREE BIRD during their set. Not doing so would result in severe punishment. Period. |

Very good write up on your first post for this topic Arlene Wiess...very good. I won't forget it those who say Queen are bad because "they were gay". |
