I never saw Star Wars Attack Of The Clones because so many of my friends, and the press tore that film to shreds.
Last night they aired it for the 1st time on Network TV, and I LOVED it!
Yes...I found alot of minor flaws. I agree it's major flaw was weak direction and a weak script.
But I loved the story, the actors nonetheless. While it's not my favorite Star Wars Film, (Empire Strikes Back is) and the Original Trilogy, I expected this thing to suck horribly, but I was amazingly entertained, filled with sadness and joy at the appropriate moments. Loved the love story between Anakin and Padme. Loved Anakin's development and failings as a Jedi.
Loved Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan. Even loved Yoda who kicked ass in the light saber battle at the end.
My only fault...is NOW I am incredibly emotionally invested in the character of Anakin Skywalker...too much too see such a loving, caring person and Jedi Knight....turn into the evil Darth Vader...in Revenge Of The Syth which I have not seen yet.
I wish George Lucas had made him evil from the start. As in real life with true evil, your Hilter's and Charles manson's are evil bad seeds from birth.
I don't like Lucas creating pure evil out of a gentle, loving hero, knight, and hero. I was crying at this film and I raarely do that. So you know I cared about Anakin if I did that.
The whole point of the 'Star Wars' saga is to show that a ruthless villain like Darth Vader is actually a good person who turned to evil because he couldn't cope with handling his own weaknesses. It reminds everyone that we're a bit like Anakin, because we all have good and evil sides, but in order to become people of good we should be able to control our own feelings and extreme emotions that might possibly make us turn to 'the dark side'.
Making him evil since the beginning would make the story very cliche, since most villains never show a good side.
Actually Arlene, Adolph Hitler was NOT evil from the start, sure he was misguided in his youth, but aren't we all, he had a disease of the mind that ultimatly took it's toll, but I speak from a personal view, I have it from a VERY reliable source that Mr. Hitler was in fact a very nice and friendly man but war has it's way of changing people. I am not speaking of WW2, that was his battle sure, but during WW1 he spent a lot of time with a young man who had been a friend from before the war and this man knew Hitler before all this CRAP began. I really wish I could go into detail, but as many might already tell you... I am just "Making this up" so it really don't matter, let's just say when I was reading about the "American" view of the EVIL mastermind of WW2 from the history books I was getting first hand information from someone that was actually there from the beginning, a man that turned his back on a friend when things had gone too far. I will NOT deny that Hitler was a very bad man towards the end of his life, but to say he was born and raised that way.. It is not true.
and to make this relevant to the topic, I think Lucas had the right idea, make Anakin go from good to bad to good again, it is the ultimate in story telling.

- I hardly think that a lot of Star Wars resembles anything near to "real life." Also making Anakin be evil from the beginning would have completely ruined the plot and it would have made it just like every other formulaic film that we have all seen. Besides, don't we have enough "pure evil" with the Emperor? Or General Grievous? Or Jabba the Hut?
The entire story of Star Wars is to show good vs. evil and the nature of both sides. I find it to be one of the most interesting things that Anakin began good, went bad, and became good again right before his death. It makes a much more emotional story, because in the end GOOD triumphs over EVIL.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one crying while watching Star Wars, Amanda.
*EPISODE III - SPOILER ALERT*
I let a tear run down on that scene were Anakin had his legs cut off by Obi Wan and then Anakin was laying on the ground with his whole body burnt by lava. I got really emotional when Obi Wan Kenobi was telling Anakin that he was like his brother and he truly believed he was the chosen one. Thumbs up to Ewan McGregor for carrying that scene so beautifully.
Also the very last scene of the movie when Obi Wan takes baby Luke to his uncle and aunt. I have to say that the background music for 'A New Hope' playing as a reminiscent of Luke's famous scene from Episode IV really touched my heart.
I basically got chills throughout the last 20 mins.
The scene between Anakin and Padme got me a bit teary-eyed, as it is a pretty tragic love-story...and like you said, the scene between Anakin and Obi-wan was quite powerful, too.
And let's not even mention when Yoda left Chewie...had me in sobs. ;^)

Mr. J. though I have not yet seen the film, both your words above and many film reviews gave away most of the end..so just tell me one thing.
Does Padme live or die after all (I know Anakin had a nightmare that she would die in childbirth) so what happens to her after all?
That movie was the best out of all of the three prequels!! Although Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman (both good actors in their own right) are crap in the movie (whiny and stilted on both sides). Ewan's made a good recovery from the shite job he did in Ep 1.
