Here it is queen 2 album review my fave joint album with sheer heart attack always sways slightly to Sha depending what mood takes me.
Recorded from august 1973 onwards this album had everything thrown in the'kitchen sink'album taken this second album to another extraordinary level boasting a great album cover photographed by mick rock depicting the four heads a la marlene dietrich pose for her film 'shangai express',wondering what delights were inside let's have a peak at the legend that is queen2.
Track1 procession kicks off the album with brian may strumming miltary style chords to a march style procession great start to an album great guitar work by brian and a starter for many concerts after and maybe before 74?
Track2 segues into another may compostion 'father to son' written a few years previous a overproduced overamplified track and boy does it rock freddie's voice sounds great throughout also a great song live!.
Track 3 segues into a beautiful song 'white queen' again written by may during his later days with smile a classic in my eyes performed in a ballad-operatic style that sounds perfect and also a live fave from the early years.
Track 4 another may composition 'some day one day' a nice song loads of guitars on this track fits in just well enough with the shape of the album.
Track 5 'The loser in the end' not one of my faves i don't think this song belongs on queen2 would have been much better on 'queen' the second roger taylor song to feature on a queen album ends side 1
Side 2
track1 'Ogre battle starts the side as the song ends but played backwards very neat idea this and i didn't notice it until recently guitars drums screams from freddie makes this song very interesting to listen to, ensueing further battles until the bugle blows a trumpet cry the song ends with all three brian roger and freddie screaming for thier lives then bang a slight frenetic pluck of the fretboard and we enter song 2.
Track2 the fairy feller's master stroke great song mad in parts but what do you expect from freddie when he's in this king of mood all sorts of odd words not known to the human race unless you are partial to dungeons and dragons type fantasy 'taterdemillion' being one i can remember queen cruise through the track with again overdubs and operatics galore.
Track 3 'nevermore'a freddie penned track which sounds great coming off 'fairy feller' a ballad of perhaps waiting for death in the mystical world that freddie lives in again pushing vocals and harmonies to extreme levels.
Track 4 'The march of the black queen' mercury track again the standout track on the album a epic in the making surely immortalised by bohemian rhapsody a year or so later so many different aspects in this song slow, fast ballad type and finally rocking it out the end to a chorus of freddie screams.
Track 5 'funny how love is' mercury track again segues in from black queen full of vocal operatics and strumming guitars to a nice ending track and where the segue ends
Last track 'seven seas of rhye' again mercury penned this version however is not the version on 'queen' but the full version with lyrics, a brilliant song which gave the band their first top ten hit in march1974.
Overall review a brillaint album full of well written songs mostly by brian and freddie with one from roger overproduced, overamplified, and in most cases over the bloody top but with harmonies and vocal operatics from the band reaching another level you can't but not love this album as it serves as a taste of more to come in the future and as it enters at no5 in the chart it sends queen on their way to better it still.
Could they possibly top this?
good review on possibly my favorite album of all time, i even agree with you on 'loser in the end,' not my favorite and is easily my least favorite from queen2.
