Can anyone recommend a good program for ripping the audio track from DVD-As? I have tried DVD Audio Extractor, but the results were not fantastic. I'm sure a lot could be done by playing with the various 5 channels on a DVD-A, and some interesting mixes could be created.
Thanks for the info, but I already have the tracks, I just need the software to rip them onto my PC. I'm afraid I'm not really familiar with the 'hub' system. :(
If anyone has problems with DVD Audio Extractor, try decrypting the DVD first with something like DVD Decrypter. Not only will it eliminate many problems, it also makes audio extraction a lot faster (except there's the added time of decrypting).
I found that it freezes on some DVDs, when you have selected the tracks you want to copy, then click 'Next', but if you wait a few minutes, it then continues. Presumably the delay is while it defeats the copy protection.
here's a list i found
Xilisoft DVD Audio Ripper
Ace DVD Audio Extractor
No1 DVD Audio Ripper
Ultra DVD2Mp3
Magic DVD Ripper
Smart Ripper
DVD Audio To CD
Easy DVD Extractor
ImToo DVD Audio Ripper
most of them are freeware
can't vouch for any individual ones, but
if you wnat any let me know mbrennan@blueyonder.co.uk
Yeah, that delay is a big pain and for me sometimes it would just freeze and never recover, but also some tracks won't even show up for ripping. I believe this happens on GVH2 actually. I couldn't for the life of me find 'Back Chat' on disc 2. So I decrypted/copied the disc to HD and then suddenly it was there. And there was no longer a freeze when previewing.. it became instant.
Yeah, it's quite difficult to work out where some of the tracks are on GVHII, as the chapters don't seem to correspond. Decrypting is certainly a viable option.

I didn't have any problem with 'Back Chat', the thing I cannot find is the instrumental version of song 'The Miracle', that's played when you are on disc 2 under the 'The miracle' section.
Ahh yes, menu music... to get that with DVD Audio Extractor, it has to be turned into a video file first. This may seem a little complex, but it's the way I do it:
Get a program called DVD Shrink. It also makes a good decrypter btw, but its main purpose is to allow you to make copies of any DVD, and it shrinks dual-layer discs down to fit on a DVD-5. Anyway, that's a topic for elsewhere but..
Open the program and select Re-author. Then find your disc. Double click to get to the structures of the DVD. Now browse and preview the 'VTS' folders to find the menu you want.
In this case, we want the menu with 'The Miracle' instrumental. This is VTS 4. Double click 'English' and get to 'Root Menu'. Drag this into the left side. You'll get a warning about it changing it to a video file and menu functionality being removed. Now just back that up (or browse for other stuff to do at the same time) and then browse for the VIDEO_TS folder it makes with DVD Audio Extractor after it's done and there it will be :)
Wow, they used PCM audio for that, so it's gonna be excellent quality.
No problem :)
One more thing I should mention is if you use something like DVD Shrink, sometimes if you de-select audio tracks you aren't going to use (under compression settings) the files will fail to show any audio track in Extractor, so if this happens, leave them all there and just extract the ones you need later.
