I am starting to notice more, after being a member myself of QZ for about 3 months, and a fan of Queen since 1975 when I was 14 and BoRhap came out in the USA,... ...that a LARGE amount of the NEW fans of Queen on their profiles on QZ...all say they became fans of Queen in 1991, after Freddie died. This is a bizarre double edged sword. I am VERY glad/happy to see so MANY NEW and younger Queen fans. But it troubles me, (though does not surprise me) that they became fans in 1991 after Freddie died. Guess like alot of Rock icons who pass and grow larger in the limelight, people take notice and become fans. Are there any of you on QZ who became fans in 1991, but... ...NOT due to Freddie's death, but just because of the music alone that you discovered? Although I would think you may have heard Queen's music or seen it more in stores in 1991 due to Freddie's death. But...it would STILL count as you becoming a fan because of the fact that you discovered Queen's amazing music. |

Arlene im one of the 1991 fans ... if you care to know more about me look at queen 2's posting Ogre Battle March of the black Queen |

and i will explain more about this if you like because its not just about Freddies death Queen means alot more to me than that. |

Actually, I think a lot of younger people became fans not because of Freddie's death, but because of the inclusion of Bohemian Rhapsody in Wayne's World. Nobody I went to school with knew who Queen or Freddie Mercury were before then but when that movie came everyone I knew suddenly owned a copy of Greatest Hits and Classic Queen. I think its often overlooked the impact that movie made stateside on album sales. |

Good question, Arlene. Well I knew them since the 80s but became their fan after Freddie's death, not in 1991 but in 1992. I never gave a damn even after his death until I had a dream of him, which I think was his spirit visiting me....Whether it was or not, after that dream I wasn't the same, and I started buying all the CDs etc. This obviously allowed me to realize their talent as a band! But it was because of that dream and all that happened afterwards that I became and stayed a Queen fan...most of all a Freddie "fan" though I love all members. Honestly I don't think anyone would become a Queen fan because of Freddie's death. I just think his death may make people see Freddie in a different light, emphasizing his huge strength, courage, and deep values as a human being, not just his talents as a showman. There's nothing wrong in starting to admire a person because of the courage he/she shows. We all need models, examples that we can face life with a smile even when times get hard...I guess this is what his death did to many (well, not his death...his attitude towards it). Fairy |

In 1991 I was only 8 years old and heard Bohemian Rhapsody a lot on the radio. I really became fond of the song, Later I got Greatest Hits I. From then on I really became a fan. His divine voice... Anyway I really did not know who Freddie really was till 1996, the I saw the first videos... I "knew" he had passed away but I never had thought about it... |

The Iron Curtain fall in 1991 and we've got a lot of rock-music to Russia, though I've heard Queen's song ("Spread Your Wings") in 1986 for the first time ever. |

Really wierd to think that some people were prevented from hearing music due to the regimes they lived in. Can't comprehend that. I'm lucky I guess! |

Yeah you are... There were few guys who could got in the jail for listening 'wrong music' in the end of 70s in the USSR. Queen wasn't one of these 'wrong' bands, but they weren't 'right' neither. |

With all my complaints about the USA, one thing I love is that with the exception of the hideous chapter in our nation known as The McCarthy Era (in the 1950's), usa citizens are free to listen to, read, and watch any music, film, TV, literature, etc. without fear of being imprisoned. Glad things finally changed for the better in the Eastern block and the Iron Curtain is no more. |

Hi! Another 1991 fan in the house... I can't remember exactly, but I was 10 years old in 1991 and saw Mr Mercury on the news and instantly found the music very interesting (and I was kind of intrigued by Freddie's 70's clothing as well, actually), resulting in me stealing my brother's copy of the 'Innuendo' LP. And the rest is, er... history. |

I discovered Queen's music in December of 1990. I had heard songs on radio but my mother was homophobic so Queen were banned from my house until my parents split so then my father uplifted the ban. First Queen album I had was a recorded copy of the 1981 Greatest Hits. |

i was a Freddie fan since 1987 with the Barcelona single, but i never knew who he was. only when he died i realised that most of my favorites songs were sunged by Freddie Mercury or Queen. Ex: Radio ga ga, Breack Free, Friends will be friends. I was not into music at all, but when i discover that my childhood favorite songs were played by the same band i just couldn´t resist, and here i am 14 years later, still going strong! Take care |
thanks freddie 17.05.2005 14:21 |
Always did like Queen at the time i was a teenager. Radio Ga Ga, I want to break free, We will rock you and Bohemian Rhapsody (was 1 at the time of release) were my favorits. But i got older new music game alone and at school i go introduced to Rap and Housemusic. After The show must go on and Innuedo i got the interrest back in Queen but after i heard Freddie was sick i couldn't believe it. And yes the death was a little part of the big interrest i have now in Queen but the most part is because of my childhoud. Seeing videoclips as I want to break free, Radio Ga Ga and Bohemian Rhapsody gets me back to a great time, but after seeing the wembley concert on video that was the time i slowly got a big fan that i am now. Oke i don't have a collection as big as some of the queenzones on here but i'm getting there. Michel link |

That's true. I remember various Queen albums being in the top 50 Billboard for what seemed 2 or 3 years. I'm certain that Hollywood Records reissuing the albums in addition to Bohemian Rhapsody being on Wayne's World are solely responsible for their "comeback" in the United States. Without those two factors I think it would have never happened. |

I became a fan in early 1991 after discovering the Innuendo album. I was well-versed in Queen by the time Fred passed away and Wayne's World hit. I was a popular source of Queen mix tapes on my college campus all through 1992. |
wstüssyb 17.05.2005 21:24 |
I became a bigger fan around Waynes World, with the constant playing of bo rhap on MTV, but in a sence I was a casual fans since 1980, CLTCL-AOBTD-WWRY-WATC being played a lot. Esp AOBTD and WWRY, I knew the words, but never really got into the band, Live at Wembley really got me into Queen from casual to more informed, as for some reason I love the live sound more, and wembley was one of the better live cd's out there. Music was a huge thing in my family, with my moms favorite bands, Pink floyd,LZ,GNR and my father with Beatles and other odd-end british bands from the 60's and my uncle who lived with us knee deep into rolling stones and the who and blondie, so I was always hearing Queen here and there. |

I discovered Queen post 1991, but that was not because i knew freddie was dead. I only found out he was dead about 3 years after i started listening to them (wasn't very knoweledgable on the subject back in those days...!)So i don't know where that puts me in this topic... |
The King Of Rhye 18.05.2005 02:18 |
I myself was one of those who bcame a fan in '91....it was just all the coverage they were getting, after Freddie's death, and then seeing the Tribute concert.....(and even seeing Flash Gordon on TV around the same time!) |
OgreBattleField1980 20.05.2005 18:25 |
I'll admit this much , Waynes World did help me discover them so did Mtv and VH1, His death did make me want to study the group as a whole more and the music itself. But saying the death attracted the younger crowd to discover them is a touch much I think. The Aids virus is also something to point out . There was a big out cry with Kurt Cobains death as well but the young crowd didnt all exactly pick up and go buy Nirvana albums because it. I think young people make their own choices based on a specific taste period nothing makes them go out and buy specific music like that unless they like things similar. Queen had more than just waynes world to thank for their resurgance in the United states , you can also go on to thank the national football leauge and the national hockey league , Major League Baseball , and all other major pro and college and even highschool sports for that. Parents too believe it or not have influenced some younger teens to listen to classic rock as a whole as well. Anyhow , sorry for the ramble , just letting some tension out. |

At the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, Queen won Best Video From a Movie and Brian and Roger accepted the award. Brian was overcome with emotion and had tears in his eyes when he accepted the speech. Roger said a brief thank you and he loved the Wayne's World movie. |

The title cut was the second US single on rock radio and hit #17. |

When Freddie died I didn't know him nor Queen, as a matter of fact I was not into music in 1991... I only started listening to music on a regular basis in 1993 when I was 13 years old... And my love to Queen was a result of Freddie Mercury's "Living on my own" single being released and hitting the charts in 1993... As a matter of fact when that song hit the charts I didn't know that Freddie was dead, and when one of my friends told me that the singer of the song "living on my own" is actually dead I wouldn't believe him... How on earth can a dead man have a number one hit and shoot a music video for it and have an album too, I said!!! But then I got hit by reality when I heard them talking about Freddie on the radio and the causes of his death in 1991... Gradually I started to purchase Queen albums, and felt that Queen's style in lyrics and music fitted my taste and eversince then Queen to me are the biggest band in the world!!! So, actually it was a song that got me into Freddie and then Queen, I was too young to know a lot about Queen or Freddie when he died... |
Smartie 24.05.2005 17:28 |
I also became a fan in 1991, when i was 11 years old. All because MTV made a "QUEEN WEEKEND" after Freddie died and i watched it! My partents never liked that kind of music, so I had to find out which bands i like all by myself. (btw later they also became Queen fans *lol*) In 1989 i first heard the song "Invisible man", loved it, but didn't knew it was Queen singing it. Then i remember the MTV Adds vor "Innuendo" but dind't like it because it featured the title track which sounded strange to me at that time. Then in November 1991 i heard at school, that Freddie has died. Later on the following weekend MTV dedicated the whole weekend to QUEEN. They played all of their video clips and i loved every one. I recorded it on Video and watched it over and over again. Still got it on tape :) :)One week later i bought Innuendo and fell in love with Queen. I thought it was a wonderful album although i didn't like the title track that much (btw now i love it ;) ) Since that time i bought all the records, i think in 1992 i had all of them. I really love Queen, i could say they are the love of my life...in the Music world!! |

Yeahh!!, Also I'm 1991 generation. Now that I remember, I don´t know if it was 1990 or 1991. My brother brought the Greatest Hits 1 and as you well know, the first song is BohRap... it took only 7 minutes, and I became a queen fan. Actually, when I started to listen queen, I didn´t know Freddie was death, I think it was one year later when I asked my brother if Queen had plans to make a new tour or something like that and he only said: Queen does not longer exist.. Freddie Mercury died", and I said something like: "$·%& I never will see them on stage.... but, maybe someday I'll forget Queen..." Unfortunately in 2005 I'm still a queen lover. |

Well, I'm one of those who became a Queen fan as a result of Freddie's death. I had heard of them before but I didn't really know their music. When I saw "Radio Ga Ga" on TV on November 26th 1991 it was like being reborn. And its my favourite Queen song and music video ever since. But the fact that he died was only the trigger to finally discover their music, the first whole album I listened to was Greatest Hits II (propably every single day in 1992). But I must admit one thing, I never would have become a fan if the music wasn´t great. by the way, I was fourteen years old in November 1991. |
deleted user 20.06.2005 20:58 |
Well... The world didn't know what they had until Freddie died.. At Freddie's death a lot of people discovered what a great artist he was.. but it was too late for them to see them life ( i don't blame young ppl like me who would never been able to see them because of age.) |
Killer Princess 21.06.2005 16:12 |
Hi, I was seven years old in 1990, when i discovered Queen... I remember clearly the amazing feeling when I listened for the first time this greatest hits tape i got borrowed. I couldn't understand a single word of the lyrics, and i didn't even know who Freddie was, but i fell in love with this great music and of course with the best band of all times. When I heard of Freddie's death it was really sad, and I got angry... because i had just discovered Queen and suddenly Freddie wasn't around anymore... I know that many of my friends engaged this Queen fever after 1992, but that's great, because that means that Queen can gather many generations (as i'm part of the later ones) and always will be a classic |

I became a fan in mid 1991, when Innuendo was out. Couldn't it be that a lot of people who became fan 'because Freddie died' (although I don't like to say it that way) became a fan in 1992 rather than in 1991? After all, Freddie died in late november, which is almost at the end of the year. |
Asterik 23.01.2006 11:01 |
I suppose the quality of Innuendo as an album they have ben a small factor too; and Queen's increasing status as the elder statesmen of rock-just look at when they got the Outstanding Contribution Award in 1990- pop fans watching may have thought about their music for the first time. Fred's death was probably the biggest factor though. |
deleted user 23.01.2006 11:07 |
I liked Queen's music a while before I really got in to them. I prefer the later stuff for some reason to the 70s stuff and even the 80s. I think I've always known Freddie was dead because my Mum has liked them for ages. But I think it might have something with Freddie's death that I became a fan. It might not nessecerily be that though. Look at Lennon, he's dead but I don't love the Beatles, I don't even really like them that much. I think it's just that Queen's music is so different that I love it and that it's managed to be listened to after all these years. |

Since I remember myself, whenever I heard any Queen song, I loved it. So, I cannot say when I started liking Queen, but I became a real fan, who wants to know everything and have everythig of Queen, less than a year ago, when I finely got all the albums. That's when I was hooked. I remember that in 1991 when Freddie died, I've seen more Queen on tv and heard more about them than ever before. But if it wasn't a great group and great music, people wouldn't become fans.Yes, they would feel sorry for Freddie, but that's it. I think the opportunity to actually see more Queen made a lot of new fans. But as I said above, it's not my case. |
darkblue 23.01.2006 14:28 |
I think that I noticed Queen in 1991/1992 and the reason is that they were everywhere, and unfortunately they were everywhere because of freddie's death at that time, honestly queen is one of few things I can remember from early 90s,at that time I didn't realise that freddie died I mean as I started listening to queen 'for real' he was dead and I took it for granted, only later it really got me and I could felt the loss, and as the years go by,I get more into this remarkable performer and musician I think that on one of queen documentaries some girl says that freddie's voice is like a narcotic you cannot get enough of it |
spymyshadow 23.01.2006 15:43 |
All I can say is that I became a fan aroud 1990, as far as i can remember, this because Italy has always been rather reluctant to achieve queen's fame, and nothing really happened to make them known to public until freddie's death. |
