I was watching some queen videos and some af them are *incredibly* gay. I don't think anyone would be fooled these days by them. I mean all those clips in which Freddie is naked for no apparent reason... "IWTBF", "Save me" or that scene from "Play the Game" where he comes out of the fire all sweaty or whatever... That one just about tops it all. From "AKOM" onwards they showed more straightness in their videos. What do you think? |

And what Freddie is doing in "IWTBF" during those ballet scenes is as gay as you can possibly get. There were some other rock stars who frequently got naked, ex. Steve Tyler, David Lee Roth, but you can't say about them that they look gay. |

ahem ... i believe the naked balet scene should be percieved as an ART FORM .. not a sign of homosexuality ... that goes to show you right there that most people who saw this video in one way or another turned thier heads and laughed rather than saw that Freddie had a love for Ballet and the arts ...I bet you wouldnt say the same thing about a few NFL football players who became ballet dancers after thier careers ended .. ala Eric Dickerson .. to name one |

If Art is a ''slang'' for gay, that means I'm gay? (or Lesbian) NO! I'm straight and a Huge art freak. Freddie just happened to be an art freak also. Whats wrong with that? Just because someone is into art doesn't mean they are gay. |
antiden 17.05.2005 02:10 |
Poltergeist shows himself stupid & ignorant with this topic. I'm ashamed, that such people are among Queen fans. As for me - I'm male, I'm 25, I'm TOTALLY straight. I've been in love with Queen for 12 years already. I don't see ANY gay themes or details in their videos or costumes. All I see - ARE BEAUTIFUL PIECES OF ART (real ART!!!) No other music artist could combine ROCK & THEATRE (and humor sometimes) so skillfully and at a such high level. That is the point. And that is one of the reasons why Queen is my favourite band! |
antiden 17.05.2005 02:25 |
By the way about Freddie being frequently naked. Don't forget about his Zoroastrian religion, which SURELY had influenced his creative work. In his religion a naked body means that a person has nothing to hide, he is turned to the world; his soul is clean, he is open-minded and kind-hearted. |

Oberon 17.05.2005 06:26 |
Well, I don't think there's any doubt that Fred's orientation influenced his work, both music and visual, but I don't think he went out of his way to create "gay" videos. It was just his way and how he expressed his ideas, and naturally that would be influenced by his personal and sexual orientation. I mean things like the lyrics to GOFLB and the visual of CLTCL kinda spell it out, don't they? |

Oberon, you're having problems... What's wrong with the lyrics to GOFLB? It's a vaudeville song and it has nothing to do with gay world at all. It's very easy to imagine that the main character sings about his romance with a woman. A NORMAL person wouldn't think other way... As well as with the CLTCL video: just look how passionately Freddie dances with those sexy girls. He is a REAL MACHO. And when he sings "there goes my baby..." he means a girl. It's so obvious! No matter that he was bisexual - for me (as for thousands of other NORMAL fans) all his creative work is straight. Extravagant, flambouant, but STRAIGHT. |
kerfuffle87 17.05.2005 09:47 |
and this topic was started because... ???? |
Brianmay1975 17.05.2005 10:06 |
Hmm, I don't think you can actually say that everything was straight about Fredie or Queen's music... Well, Freddie had a gay moustache, haircut, jeans and white vest (high clone look - at Live Aid), wore leather jackets (clone look), wore black nail polish and makeup, danced around some male dancers in the video for CLTCL, sang some songs in an obvious campy manner (See What A Fool I've Been and even GOFLB)... not to mention the video for Body Language. And the song itself has subtle homoerotic lyrics: "You've got the cuttest ass I've ever seen" - which is damn funny btw, but is certainly hinting to homosexuality. Saying that there's nothing gay in Queen is as false as is stating that everything Queen did was gay! In fact, there was a permanent teasing and hinting with being gay. After all, Freddie was what he was and he was a homosexual. What's wrong with that? On the other hand, his life and his work were influenced by that, just as anybody's life are influenced by what they are and what they do. Nothing special with that. Maybe that's precisely the reason you love Queen, maybe the slightly camp style attracted you. Bear this in mind, if Freddie had been different, Queen's music would have been different too. If you like it the way it is, then perhaps you should come to terms with Freddie being gay. And, in fact, I can't imagine a straight guy doing GOFLB... |

Shirtless aint naked my friend. And being 'all sweaty' aint gay either. Secondly, to dress in drag (womens clothing) in Britain is just a mess about, not to be taken seriously. It's just a bit of fun. Remember 3 of Queen were straight. The IWTBF video is camp. Camp doesnt always mean gay. Mick Jagger is camp. Robert Plant is a bit camp and they are both perfectly straight. |

I take that as a subtle reference to a "date" between two men as it would usually be the man who tastes the wine and pays. Might be reading too much into it, but it was the 70s when things were more conservative on the equality front etc. and I like the idea of Fred being inventive in this way... CLTCL. well, him dancing with both men and women, and men dressed like that. If that's not playing with biker/leather references, I don't know what it is!!! |
Krizzy 17.05.2005 13:01 |
Oh PULEASE!!!! DARLING! NO SHIT! This topic has been played to death like a strangled cat! Yes, he made sure to get some gay references into almost all of Queens videos WHY? Because Freddie was GAY and was PROUD to be GAY aand he was a pioneer way ahead of his time...there would be no Boy George or Pet Shop Boys or Scissor Sisters without Freddie who came first to stand out along with David Bowie (who eventually renouced his bisexuality...(yeah right!) Freddie was not afraid of who he was or what he was and if he not only remembered for a great voice and musical talent he should also be remembered for taking a chance and writing "openly gay" love songs (before Elton John). Kriz ;o) |

I don't see that his sexual orientation should matter to anyone. I like his music, sense of humour and willingness to think outside of the mundane norm. GOFLB is a whimsical style piece much like Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon, Blurring the gender lines was common in the '70s. Whoever he had sex with is inconsequential to anyone not directly involved. I hope they had fun, male or female. |
poltergeist 17.05.2005 17:28 |
I'm not trying to make any point. I just didn't notice before how gay some of the videos look. I got this when a friend to whom I gave the videos pointed it out to me. Now a few replies: 1)to Antiden he says I'm ignorant and stupid and than says that Freddie's campy attitude is derived from zoroastrianism. As I said before I don't have anything against him being gay, I just noticed the videos. And about zoroastrianism... WTF??? And he calls me ignorant 2)to Lord Blackladder In IWTBF I wasn't talking about the drag clothing, I was talking about the ballet stuff which is *really* gay 3)to Krizzy You can not say that Freddie represented the gay community or was proud to be gay. He never admitted it. So how proud does this make him? |

Wow... How foolish Queen fans can be... Just amazing! Many of them see in Queen&Freddie songs & videos actually what stupid press and Queen-haters would like to see... Krizzy is talking a real bullshit! No comment. Especially about "openly gay" songs by Freddie. THERE ARE NO SUCH SONGS, my dear! Plus remember: Freddie DIDN'T WANT the publicity to know about his orientation till the very end. Brian1975 is talking shit too. By the way, the video of "Body Language" is HETEROSEXUAL: men are relaxing with sexy women. Is that a gay manner? :)) And the line "You got the cutest ass..." - is surely about ladie's ass (along with red lips & etc.) - and it's shown in the video. Only the person with ill imagination can see it differently. And, dear Poltergeist, remember that ballet is campy in its nature - it has nothing to do with gayness at all! In IWTBF Fred represents Nijinsky in his famous style of appearance and dancing - AND IT'S A GREAT PIECE OF ART (called BALLET). Dear friends, don't read what press writes about Queen and all those stupid books by Hutton, Freestone and other money-makers. Freddie combined his religion, different types of music, artisism, glam-appearance(in 70's), theatre, showmanship and humor altogether - and that what was his and Queen creative work! It has nothing to do with his sexuality at all (though I don't have anything against gay people). |

Antiden- The only reason Body Langauge seems to be directed towards women is that: 1) Freddie is fronting a group with 3 other hetero men. 2) In 1982.... you couldn't say "He's got the cutest ass I've ever seen".... sung by another guy. That probably wouldn't get too much radio play. 3) By 1982, Freddie had probably had sex with over 1,000 men.... while he painfully (to him) had been with 2 women sexually that the band and crew knew about. So... chances are ..... cute asses, to Fred ... are probably of the male gender. However, I am 100% hetero, and I like Body Langauge + the video. |

It has nothing to do with his sexuality at all (though I don't have anything against gay people). My friend, subtle references don't work for you. You seem to be unable to see more than it is obviously "shown in a video"... What can I add? It's useless to say anything more, as you won't get convinced anyhow. You're simply blind to all that hinting and teasing in Freddie's music and stage performances - and that's precisely because you just don't want to accept Freddie was gay and acted consequently. And you dare say you have nothing against gay people! About that line in Body Language: maybe I do have an ill imagination, but... did you know that the lyrics to Body Language were so homoerotic in the beginning that the band refused to record them? So the song ended up on the album with censored lyrics... Oh and don't forget Freddie had just adopted the gay clone look (short hair, moustache, leather jackets). And should I make a point about the meaning of this anatomical part in gay sexuality? It actually makes more sense to have an ill imagination like mine, isn't it? :) Oh and what do you say about that: the word "QUEEN" itself is slang for "gay man". And we all know that Freddie was the one who named the band... P.S. Before accusing me of talking shit again, read this Freddie quote: "I was certainlly aware of the gay connotation [of the name of the band], but that was just one facet of it". So Freddie himself stated that there a gay facet to all this "Queen" thing... Good point, by the way, about the "openly gay songs": there were in fact none, because it was simply not acceptable in the 70s and the 80s to sing openly gay songs. But the subtle hints to gayness were still there... |
