Well, this was pretty amazing....I was just walking home from work, I'd say about an hour ago (which would have been about 3:45am Eastern time), and just as I was about to walk in the door, I looked to the north, and after a few minutes of thinking "what in the blue hell is that in the sky?", I realized, I have just seen the aurora borealis, aka Northern Lights.........absolutely beautiful, with streaks of white and green in the night sky......first time I've ever happened to see that!
I am near Detroit, Michigan in case anyone wonders...

Cool now you've experient that :) THe northen lights are so georgus ! and fantastic! I love them nowdays.... hehe when I was little I was afraid of them :S
you can - but you need to be up high above the phosphor glow of streetlighting
and also (apparently) they're quite viewable from scotland
When is the best time to look for aurorae?
The best time of night is around midnight when the sky is at its darkest. link
My parent saw them (in Kentucky) once but i was asleep (in the car) and the DID NOT WAKE ME!!! Aurgh! Dad lived in northwestern OH as a boy (he was born in Lansing MI) and he used to see them.
