Sid Vicious : "Aren't you that Freddie Platinum what's bringing ballet to the masses?"
Freddie Mercury: "Ah, Mr Ferocious. Well, we're trying our best dear."
:))))
I've heard that this was a real exchange back in the late seventies. If it actually happened, it's a real classic....
I've always loved this story because at the time the punks were really knocking bands like Queen and Pink Floyd etc. So Freddie bumping into Sid was kind of like two worlds colliding. I've often read or heard through Brian May that Freddie either called Sid Mr. Ferocious or Simon Awful at that brief encounter. Either way, it seems Freddie handled it in a carefree manner. I read just last week that apparently Sid crawled on his knees through Freddies' legs. This is still a great story!!!
Sex Pistols can go to hell.
What the hell is it with people looking at punk, new wave, whatever, and saying it's more substantial and more real than other music at the time? To me it's just a bunch of five thumbed noise polluters whinging about their squalid lives while sucking down beer and hitting each other.
Stupid punks.
Alot of times all the barbs by one artist about another artist that you see in the press is for real, but sometimes it's just PR.. when in reality, the 2 artists respect and actually like one another, in their own way.
Sounds like Fred & Sid had a good LOL with one another!
Ooh I just downloaded part of an interview with Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious talking about Freddie and they were really mean. You can download it here if you want to hear the horribleness link
dude, they're closet Queenfans :P
This is just for reputation, they can't say: we like FM and Queen"! Ever seen the MTV coverage of the Innuendo party? Steve Jones said he likes and admires them. :)
I listened to the clip and I agree. There is nothing good natured about the horrible things they say about Freddie at all. They rag about how ugly he is, they make fun of his voice, they make fun of his taste in the GREAT Russian ballet dancer Vaslav Nijynsky who Freddie apparently loved and gave the woman speaking in the clip, a book about.
They go on to say what does ballet have anything to do with Rock & Roll?
First...numbskulls, (Sid & Rotten I'm referring to), apparently Freddie was just talking about and sharing his OTHER interests and things he loved, which means Freddie was not a one dimensional person. Lots of Rock stars like classical music, opera, ballet...get over it.
2nd...and what did Sid & Rotten know about R&R? I didn't know pissing and vomiting on your audience screaming the F word at your audience and sticking safety pins in your face, and in Sid's case becoming a smacked out druggie who wasted himself like the loser he was..had anything to do with Rock & Roll. Bully losers they were and jealous of Fred's talent. The Pistols were as Brian said recently in aninterview ...when speaking about punk..just a trend, a fashion. It had it's novelty and people quickly tired of its no talent losers who couldn't play their own instruments, write music, or sing.
Frog wrote: Yes. I don't know too many people who know of 'The Sex Pistols'.. but I know everyone likes Queen songs, even people against homosexuality. I know a guy who is VERY religious but bought each Queen album everytime they came out, and he's in the USA, and he even likes the video to I Want To Break Free.
If it wasn't for ballet, would Freddie have had such talent? Of course not! Ballet made Freddie become the #1 Frontman! And there's no one who can take his place. :) and most people LOVE Freddie!
BTW..I am NOW even MORE in love with Freddie than ever as while I knew he loved ballet and dance, I never knew Freddie loved and was a fan of Nijynsky, outside of using a part of one of Debussy's ballets L'Apres-Midi D'un Faune...
....that Nijynsky danced the lead role in, in the video for "I Want To Break Free".
Also, you can see when Freddie performs live, that he definitely studied and watched ballet and modern dancers by his own amazing dance and acrobatic moves on stage. Geez, just look at him on Live At Wembley Stadium. His moves are wonderful. Plus Freddie even performed with The Royal ballet in I think 1979. But you can definitely see it in his moves on stage performing live. And Freddie's talents as a dancer made his an even more electric live performer. Look at his acrobatic/ballet like dance moves even at Live Aid too. That's what made him the great showman and legend that he was/is!
When I was a teenager I had biographies of...all the greatest ballet dancers and modern dancers including:
Vaslav Nijynsky & The Ballet Russes written by his wife Romola
Margot Fonteyn
Anna Pavlova
Isadora Duncun
Rudolf Nuryev
The American Ballet Theater
Mikhail Baryshnikov
Gelsey Kirkland
The Kirov Ballet
The Royal Ballet
The Joffrey Ballet
Choreographers George Balanchine, Alvin Ailey and the wonderful one for the Royal Ballet whose name escapes me...anyone help me out here...I forget his name, HELP!
In one of the recent interviews Rotten has said that he was listen to Queen, Boston and Journey in the second half of the 70s, but he was ashamed to tell about that to the rest of SP members.
I don't like the Sex Pistols, I think their music is awful, but it looks like most people don't get their sense of humour...
Sid Vicious even used to wear t-shirts with the swastica, but he wasn't a nazi, he didn't support nazism in any way, and as far as I'm concerned, he was against nazi-punk. He wore that kind of shirt simply to shock people.
And by reading this thread, I can see that nearly 30 years after his death, there are still a bunch of *cough* overreacting about the things he used to do and say...
If you dont know what the whole punk movement was about, you really need an education. It was about bringing it back to the people, like the early rock'n'roll days basically anyone could do it, to get to the standards of a Page or a Hendrix you'd have to practice eternally.
To dismiss punk bands saying they cant play or write is bollocks two words = Joe Strummer & I will challenge anyone on here who dares say he couldnt write or play
Ok, why Sid Vicious? Why not Syd Barrett? He's wayyyyyy cooler. Or maybe George Harrison or John Lennon or Mick Tucker or Kurt Cobain? Why a fucking Sex Pistol?
