Yes, I have read the reviews in the Swedish news papers, and NO I do not believe that the reviewers went to the same show as I did... so here is MY review of the show at the Globe, 30 April 2005! I was there, my first live concert with Queen although I’ve been a fan since 1973 and their first record, Queen. The magical moments for me were numerous at this Queen +Paul Rodgers concert in Stockholm at the Globe 30 April 2005. 01. Intro: It's A Beautiful Day Ross Robertson / DJ Koma 2005 techno mix [tape] When this intro started goose bumps of anticipation came all over my body, yum! This will be great! 02. Intro: Lose Yourself [tape - Eminem] Why are they playing Eminem? I lost my goose bumps! 03. Intro: Reachin' Out (Paul on vocals + Spike keyboards only) Now Something is about to happen! 04. Tie Your Mother Down (Paul on vocals) WOW, these guys ROCK! 05. I Want To Break Free (Paul on vocals) Nice version but I could not hear the vocals... 06. Fat Bottomed Girls (Paul on vocals) I love this song as it gets me back to all the concert videos I have collected over the years and Queen always played this song in the beginning 07. Wishing Well (Paul on vocals) I’m not a Free fan and this song made my goose bumps disappear again... 08. Crazy Little Thing Called Love (Paul on vocals + guitar) Nice version! 09. Say It's Not True (Roger on vocals) My photo from this song show a lonely Roger at the front of the "walkway" lit by a single white lamp from above, a beautiful photo and a beautiful song. Roger’s voice was sweet and vulnerable and the song gave me tears. 10. '39 (Brian on vocals & guitar) This just shows that Brian has a strong voice, and is THE guitar player! 11. Love Of My Life (Brian on vocals & guitar) AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cried "floods" and my heart felt like bursting. I was thoroughly impressed with Brian’s voice that was strong and true and the song has to be one of the most beautiful ever written! 12. Hammer To Fall slow/fast (Brian and Paul on vocals) A Surprising start of this "heavy metal" song. To start acoustically and slowly twist the song to the original was genius! 13. Feel Like Makin' Love (Paul on vocals) Hm, can’t remember this one? 14. Let There Be Drums Roger really has got IT! One of the planets best drummers, I’ve always known it and now I know why! 15. I'm In Love With My Car (Roger on vocals and drums!) FANTASTIC! This is Rogers song and he made this version of it the best ever! How the man can sing! Goose bumps? YES!! 16. Guitar solo Brighton rock combined with (I don’t remember) but the combination was awesome!! Some parts were so beautiful that tears just streamed from my eyes and I felt happy! Fantastic! 17. Last Horizon Another song that I do not remember especially. 18. These Are The Days Of Our Lives (Roger on vocals) Fantastic song by Roger! I’m IMPRESSED and lucky to have been here! 19. Radio Ga Ga (Roger and Paul on vocals) Not one of my favourites, but this version made me laugh! ALL hands were up and the sight of all these fans clapping to the beat is awesome and inspiring! 20. Can't Get Enough Of Your Love (Paul on vocals) Great! Again THANKS for this night! 21. A Kind Of Magic (Paul on vocals) One of my favourites, didn’t really say anything to me now though the light show was spectacular!!! 22. I Want It All (Paul on vocals) What do you want? Brian asked... and the audience shouted... Freddie Mercury!!!!!!!!! ;o) Then the heavy song I want it all with all the great singers in the audience singing along! Awesome! 23. Bohemian Rhapsody (Freddie and Paul on vocals) Now, I’m going to stick my chin out... this is NOT one of my favourite Queen songs... I know, I know, EVERYBODY can sing the lyrics, yes, it is a special song etc etc but it has never done anything with my goose bumps and I ALWAYS judge a song by my bumps and shivers! This version in Stockholm |

Cramps! How could I have forgotten no 17 "Last Horizon", this was one of Brians guitar Solos, and it was amazing! |

Katrin_Enkel wrote: Cramps! How could I have forgotten no 17 "Last Horizon", this was one of Brians guitar Solos, and it was amazing!Perhaps you forgot because it was one of his guitar solos? I know it took me a lot of willpower to stay awake during all those at the Stockholm concert... :P |
Katrin_Enkel 08.05.2005 13:59 |
Tero! Stay awake? During one of BRIAN'S solos? You gotta be kidding? No? Well myself was in heaven during the solos so maybe I was dreaming? ;o) |

Katrin_Enkel wrote: Tero! Stay awake? During one of BRIAN'S solos? You gotta be kidding? No? Well myself was in heaven during the solos so maybe I was dreaming? ;o)Unfortunately I'm not kidding... I find I'm disliking his solos more and more as the years pass by. :/ Maybe it would help if they sounded a bit more different in different concerts? :P |
Katrin_Enkel 09.05.2005 02:49 |
Have you been to many concerts? Myself, well this in Globen was the first! Maybe if I had heard many solos that were similar I too would find them boring, who knows... ;o) On the VHS tapes I've got with concerts such as "live in Rio" and "live at Wembley" etc I can't remember any solos of Brian. Were they simply cut down or what? Do anybody know? |
Mr. Scully 09.05.2005 04:04 |
Brian's solos are great - until he starts playing that Chinese Torture stuff, that's really a torture for the ears. I wonder if he's aware how loud it is! It's really painful (and I normally LOVE loud rock music). |

Were they simply cut down or what? Do anybody know?Personally, I've seen Brian live only at Globen. :P But I have heard a "few" bootlegs of his, and all the solos sound the same (boring) to me. I'm sure there are Brian fans and future guitarists who get excited about him playing, but I don't. :/ What was it that Expressen said? Something about "May's 15 minute guitar solo being pure torture"? That sounds about right to me. :P At least the DVD and CD of live at Wembley have a 9 minute long Brighton Rock Solo... The same one he's had since the Smile days! |
Katrin_Enkel 09.05.2005 08:34 |
I think I'll have to buy DVDs with the concerts as Im sure the VHS tapes doesn't have any Brian solos. If it is like you say, Tero, that the solos haven't evolved since the Smiles days THATS TRAGIC! I wonder WHY the solos are similar year by year? Does anybody have any suggestions or thoughts? Yes, the Expressen reviewer wrote the "torture" expression re. Brians solos... |
Tero 09.05.2005 10:13 |
Katrin_Enkel wrote: I think I'll have to buy DVDs with the concerts as Im sure the VHS tapes doesn't have any Brian solos. Yes, the Expressen reviewer wrote the "torture" expression re. Brians solos...If I remember correctly, the Wembley video had parts of the guitar solo in the beginning over the stadium montage. :/ I wouldn't have bought the paper myself, but it was given for free on the flight back to Finland... :P I think they were quite right about Say It's Not True as well, but I actually enjoyed Paul Rodgers. |
Katrin_Enkel 11.05.2005 08:27 |
What did Expressen write re. "say it's not true"? Personally I thought that Rogers voice was a little bit shaky but that the meloduy was nice. I havent bougth Expressen myself, I had the review told to me by my husband that (as you) had the paper for free on a plane. Did you go to Sweden to see the concert or did you have other reasons for the trip. Gallivanting over to Sweden for one concert seems a bit extravagant... ;o) |

"Taylor är mest patetisk (den nyskrivna hyllningen till Nelson Mandela är ett tvättäkta pekoral)". It isn't really even amusing. It's just... Bland. :/ No, I went there just to see the concert. How else could I be able to critisise the current "Queen" if I didn't see it for myself? :P |
TheGame 11.05.2005 09:51 |
Fuck the papers, that's my opinion. I think his solo's are great, just love Last Horizon, ahh. Everybody can't mean the same, but if somebody thought the show was crap, then those persons must have some really musically trouble. |
Katrin_Enkel 16.05.2005 02:31 |
Fantastically done by you Tero, going from Finland to Sweden for the Queen concert. I wish I could do the same and go to the Hyde Park gig, Im sure that will be a happening worth experiencing!!!! Are you going to any more of the concerts? |
Katrin_Enkel 16.05.2005 02:35 |
Hello The Game! How do you fuck the papers, seriously? According to my experience the reviewers write crap about conserts and artists and they can just go on doing this year after year spewing there negative words around. How do we stop them polluting the atmosphere? I think "last horizon" was awsome, and the lights enhanced that feeling! |

But if they do another tour next year, I'll be going to at least one concert. ;) |

Aah, the shortage of money, what would life be if one had endless resourses? As a student since more years than I like to count (Im a PhD student now, but have been years and years at University) Im always short of cach. Hope that we are more lucky in other things... nudge, nudge... ;o) Have you heard anything regarding a concert next year? What? Where? |
Tero 16.05.2005 14:19 |
Katrin_Enkel wrote: Have you heard anything regarding a concert next year? What? Where? The only thing I've heard about the future is that Q+PR are considering recording an album in the future... I wouldn't be surprised if that happens, and in that case they will be touring again. |

Tero, whoever you are -- you have absolutely no idea what good music is all about. You are a sad individual i reckon. Brian May is one of the best guitarists on the planet and has been one of the most inventive players in a generation inspiring thousands of kids to pick up the axe. His techinique and sound are entirely unique --- i don't believe i have heard any of your stuff by the way ... ??? If you hate Queen so much why not do us all a favour and stay at home and do the knitting! |

Well TheGame... and here I had quite a few ideas about how to proceed... ;o) Seriously, HOW do we get the people writing musical reviews NOT to write about Britney as she was gods gift to mankind when YES, Queen is THE GIFT! (among some other gifts of course ;o) Personally I believe that musical reviewers sort of follow th stream, every band that has a good review gets another as some sort of fashion, and the band that in the first review get written about with words like "pathetic" gets these words in the next one as well as the reviewer reads all the others beforehand and have a predjudice about the concert. Personally I think the Queen +PR concert was an avsome experience! And the guys really ROCK! |

You wrote very well i must say, and you got a huge point. The reviewers sort of follow the stream, the swedish review of the concert is an good example of that. I even wrote back to the reviewers to review their review! And yes, the guys still ROCKS! |

I really love it when people make the assumption that you can't possibly like Queen if you don't idolise Mr. May.I just think that to rubbish Brian May's guitar solos as boring is pretty pathetic. If you listen to his work over the years, each solo is different -- it may have similar figures, signatures or licks at times but every one is unique. a reflection of 'How he feels on the night' and so on. but hey --- you have a right to your opinion and i have a right to tell you it's wrong. Try listening to a selection of solos from 1974 to 2005 and the penny will drop. It's about dynamics with Brian, touch and feel. If you play guitar you should understand what this means. And if you don't play guitar but love music, you should STILL understand what this means. still ... don't give up your knitting either! |

Maybe if you crochet a Red Special copy you may start to understand why solos exist in songs. Have you ever studied a master painter at work ... the subtlety of stroke, the nuances of light and shade, the raw aggression mixed with gentle blending of colour, the density of the paint, the whole as opposed to the part ... nah! didn't think so. back to your knitting then ..... stitch one, cross one, stitch one :} |

Perhaps this was a stupid thing to do, but the reviewer was not proffesional. To Anders N. "I just wonder if you attended at the Queen concert? You should also know that Paul don't replace Freddie, and this makes a huge difference. This is Queen+Paul Rodgers, but can't expect the press to see the differnce, or should we? Your review was shit, not just because you didn't like the artist, but it wasn't objective either. Some shorts lines, and the summary was negative....Not proffesional written, but hey, you might not be proffesional either. Swedish people, which attended at the concert and read your review, was actually embarrassed by your review. This tells a lot, hope you are proud. Let's all praise Britney Spears! Get the irony..." |

Thanks "TheGame" for sharing the letter to the reviewer with us. You did a good thing in writing to him as I only thought "I ought to write to the creep and tell him what a Queen fan thought of this event" but I did not write... Great work that you did! And about solos... Im a woman and I am always excited and covered in goose bumps when hearing a guitar solo. Something in the sound, the harmonies, the shift between mild and aggressive, between slow and rapid gets to my nervs and feelings in a way that I find difficult to describe but is great anyway! Well, do you have to be MACHO to apreciate a solo???? Where did you get that idea? |

It's nothing to do with any kind of macho nonsense -- it's about being in tune and at one with the music. I have listened to Queen songs and Brian's solos thousands of times over the years and i hear something different every single time i listen -- they are stunning. |

I'm not sure if you were just trying to be clever and present knitting as the opposite of playing the guitar, or whether you were actually trying to provoke an argument out of me. :/ Either way, I do agree that this topic has run way past the point where it's sensible to continue it. |
georghi 18.05.2005 12:01 |
to be honest Tero --- i have no need to provoke an argument --- i find that boring and i have better things to do with my time. I just think your initial posting regarding Brian's solos and guitar solos in general was so narrow minded that it needed re-dressing. and i found the comments you made in your previous posting which tried to link the guitar with a phallic symbol, to be down right rude and totally unnecessary. Typical of todays 'shock culture' - crude and bland and done before. certainly not funny if that was your intention. That's why i like Brian's guitar playing --- inventive, fresh, dynamic and original, which is exactly the opposite of your banal ranting. As for the knitting --- now that's what i call BORING! so maybe that's a hobby which you may derive some pleasure from. Only a suggestion of course but it may work for you. In any case let us rockers get on with enjoying the Music while you make sure you don't miss a stitch. |
