It always thought it was about pimp- but it does make sense of being a pre-Death On Two Legs thing. Even musically those two have something in common. (and not only being bloody brilliant :) )
The lyrics seem quite clear that it's about exploitation and signing your creative life away. I really like it and DOTL. Really angry songs. Considering Fred wrote some really delicate stuff in the same era, it really shows his talent
There's references throughout to "signing", "ripoffs", etc. It's clearly about contracts, bad deals, etc, but some people seem to fail to pick up on that; I saw one explanation that the song was about some kind of mythical beast!
Oh and "reduce you to a muzak fake machine"... showing that it's specifically *music* contracts that song refers to, and how they can adversely affect the music's creativity. The clues are all there..
