Ok so we have all tried to emulate Freddie - but what is the hardest vocal? Personally I would say Another One Bites The Dust or I Want to Break Free. Which songs have you tried (on karaoke) and thought "oh shit!" |
Mercuryworks 29.04.2005 16:55 |
The Prophet's Song or Let Me Enterain You |
Paul Fisher 29.04.2005 16:59 |
Yes but who would try to sing the Prophet's Song on their own - and have you found it on a karaoke!!!! - lucky you!! |

All flasetto songs...like Cool cat. For a man it's very hard to sing this. Personally I'm a soprano, which means I can sing quite high, and I even find it hard to sing, so Freddie was amazing to sing this ! I would also say that all complex songs, like Liar and March of the Black Queen, plus "musical comedy" songs like Bring back that Leroy Brown, Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon, Bohemian Rhapsody and The Millionnaire Waltz, were probably quite hard to sing, because Freddie had to take very different voice keys in the same song, which is hard to do in the time of one song. And I guess The Show Must Go On was also hard to sing, especially if we consider Freddie's state at the moment he recorded it. I think Freddie had to sing a lot of different hard songs in his career, which he did in an amazing, wonderful way - and considering the fact he never took singing lessons, we can say he was totally the best singer in the world |
Gunpowder Gelatine 29.04.2005 23:07 |
The Prophet's Song, The Show Must Go On and maybe songs like My Fairy King or March Of The Black Queen. And Pain Is So Close To Pleasure and Cool Cat, since it's hard to get falsetto to sound decent. |
nasty_queenie 29.04.2005 23:32 |
Maybe it's just me but I find most Queen songs fairly easy to sing. Then again, they sound good to me but maybe not to anyone else. The operatic section of Bo Rhap is hard of course. |
Yogurt 30.04.2005 00:38 |
Teo Torriatte and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. They have low notes that are kind of difficult to sing. |
Dicky Hart 30.04.2005 02:34 |
tried 'dead on time' once, murder it was. As far as SMGO even brian and Roger have destroyed that one a few times. And as as far as 'IWTBF' goes never understood why roger walloped that one in his solo tours, i thought he was terrible at it. |

Anyone got info on how exactly to sing without losing breath |

The Hero, ( studio version ). |
Mrs Taylor 05 30.04.2005 10:18 |
I can almost manage TSMGO but near the end where Freddie sings "I'll face it with a grin, I'm never giving in" I can't sing the "on with the show" that comes after it, unless I belt it out so I can hit the note otherwise it's too high ! |
Mrs Taylor 05 30.04.2005 10:19 |
Oh and I just cannot manage I'm In Love With My Car, Roger's vocals are soooooooooooooo hard to match !!! |
Freddie rocks 30.04.2005 16:04 |
yeah, I'd probably say...mmmm....impromptu on the Queen Live @ Wembley DVD! Very difficult! But Freddie could handle anything so I don't think it would matter to him! mossan |

When I sing Queen songs, I don't try to emulate Freddie. I use my own voice. |

I think they pitched up some of the recordings (e.g. The Hero). You can also hear in many songs that the lead vocal wasn't recorded in one piece but in segments that sometimes even overlap a little bit. So you do not necessarily have to use the studio recordings as standard for judgement when it's your turn at the Karaoke bar and you suddenly run out of breath... In the studio Freddie could reach D4 or E4 (without Falsetto), whereas live it probably was A3 (the one in TYMD or HTF). The most difficult song in concerts must have been in WATC ("I've come through"): It's a Bb3 at a very important position of the song, Freddie had to play the piano at the same time, it was the last song after about 2 hours singing, and Roger did not back him up (in contrast to the chorus part). I think Roger could sing up to E4 (in Live Killers "I'm in love with my car"). What I don't understand is why they did not tune down some of the songs (such as Action this day, Radio gaga, WATC) when playing live. From my limited knowledge they only did this with "Who wants to live forever" (tuned down 2 halftones). |

Johnnie wrote: ScandalTotally agree here. I just sing for fun, not in a band or so. There are rather mixed opinions on my singing and I don't sing Queens songs trying to be Freddie (just use your own voice), but "Scandal" is one of the harder Queen Songs to sing IMO. |
Knute 01.05.2005 19:36 |
I think that Freddie's hardest vocal would be It's Late. He hits that high B without going into his head voice a lot on the recorded version. Live he transposed most of those lines. |
Johnnie 02.05.2005 05:38 |
Agree, Plengel! Many people think I'm manipulating my voice to try and sound like Freddie. I don't! If there are any similartities it's purely coincidental. Not that I ain't proud though! :) Of course you get into the music and will have some Freddie 'thingies' when singing. But never would I try and rehearse on how to sound as close to Freddie as possible. I can't think of any reason to do that anyway. When it comes to hard songs to sing... it's not only high notes. For example Scandal, it's constantly on a level that is hard to sing, not just some short moments. Some songs, in a lower range can be as hard also, because you also need to breathe and the sentences follow each other rapidly. Every singer has one area in his/her voice that is hard for them, just below or above is 'easy', but that particular area is kinda hard to get right. |
Dany Mercury 02.05.2005 06:27 |
I do not consider myself a singer. I play guitar and piano, just like Brian. Basically, I learned to sing like Brian. The hardest one for me is "Nothin' But Blue". The part that goes : No use in crying/That ain't what you would do/No living or dying/we'll just keep on fighting through". I have a hard time hitting the "through". "Only Make Believe" isn't a child's play neither. "But It's Onnnnnnnnnnnnnlyyyyyy Makeeee Beeeeelieveeeeee ! Make Beeeeliveeee Oohhhhh Oohhhhh !". This is hard. As for Roger, most of the "True's" in "Say It's Not True" are hard for me. Thank God I only sing Brian songs on stage...or so. Well, "In My Defence" is so hard for me to sing... And as for Queen songs that I sing because I don't sing things like "Great King Rat" or stuff from that era too much. Not my kind of songs to sing. You will find that very bizarre, but I've never been able to sing a simple song like "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". I can't find my own tone. It's getting better, but I have a lot of difficulties singing Brian's part which only goes : "This Thing, Called Love, Like A Baby, Ooh Ooh, Ooh Ooh", etc.... My voice's ugly. I can't find a way that I like. And for the others, if I use my own voice, it's not a problem really. The problem with "Crazy" is that I have to do it live on stage several times but like Roger, our drummer has a powerful voice and covers mine a lot in that song. Fixes the problem...:P Let's talk about Elvis Presley. That's a guy I respect a lot. He had amazing vocals and in 10 years, since 1995, I've never been able to hit the "Way" in "My Way" at the end, and I've never been able to reach the "With You" at the end of "Can't Help Falling In Love", live. It's hell deciding who has the best voice between Presley and Mercury. I'd go for Mercury but that's very hard to decide... |

Anyone tried to sing 'don't try so hard'?! That'd be a fair effort i reckon. It sounds like he sings in almost his chest voice in the high parts of the chorus, than uses falsetto(spelling?!) for the lower bits...is a fair effort. |
MamaQueen 03.05.2005 21:09 |
I have to say that thanks to Freddie I've learned to sing better. He's been a teacher to me and any singer has a lot to learn from him. His voice is beautiful and I don't think anyone can imitate it. But we can learn from his interpretations, his inflections, how to make the voice sweet, passionate, angry, the pauses he makes, etc. A difficult song for me to sing well is Somebody to Love. |
kohuept 04.05.2005 12:50 |
I don't have that much of a problem with high/low notes. What kills me, though, are the 'breathy' songs. I have a tough time singing softly and because of that, a lot of Brians songs loose feeling when I sing'em. YTMBA is a good example..."Look into my eyes..." I'd have to go down a bit and add a little strength. Everyone's posts on this are interresting...good topic! |

I never sang the guitar solo at a concert before - AWSOME! |

I can sing most of the songs quite well, but "the show must go on" is really hard, well, not all of it but the really high tones, I just can't manage those. Oh, and "One year of love", when Freddie goes "My lips search for your lips", omg, how does he do it?! My fav songs to sing is "Hammer to fall", "Sombody to love", "Love of my life" and "I want to break free" :) |

Most of the stuff from Innuendo- the title track, Show Must Go On, Don't Try So Hard. Those are really difficult. And some stuff from Queen II for some strange reason- his vocal lines were much more approachable on ANATO, QII is really weird... To sing March Of The Black Queen, even without attempting the harmonies... I guess the reason why they never played it (as a whole)... Or try singing Fairy Feller's Masterstroke... Impossible... |
